To remember that it didn’t really get dark in the 1999 eclipse?

I was 14, in South Wales. If you look at the news coverage and videos recorded in 1999 it seems to get as dark as night. But I don’t remember that at all - the sky was still blue, it just went dim, like it would in heavy rain or as if it was 6pm instead of 11am.

Is this how other people remember it?

For anyone interested, once image approved, totality track for the UK portion of the 1999 eclipse. Anyone north of the upper of the three solid three lines didn't get to experience a total eclipse....

Exactly. My exH saw totality at Fistral beach in Cornwall. I was in Kent, it was more like dusk there:

We went over to France and watched it from a field, it went really dark! All the birds stopped singing etc, it was really eerie.

GnomeDePlume · 12/08/2026 12:46

@GasPanic thank you for the useful information but I particularly enjoyed the summary: Partial eclipses are just meh.

Summed up how I felt about the 1999 eclipse as experienced in the midlands.

Bobbingtons · 12/08/2026 12:47

I remember it clearly, worked in Twickenham and got the full eclipse, next door was a welders and the happily cut up wedding glass for us to watch the progress. It was like night for a few minutes.
The thing I really remember was the silence, even the birds went quiet for those couple of minutes, was a really awe inspiring situation.

CookingFatCat · 12/08/2026 12:50

I remember it as more like an overcast sky, and deciding a ‘was that it’ moment!

Yes, likewise for the effect in Kent.

My Dad took photos and they do not show it as dark outside.

It got dark where I was and cold. I remember it very clearly standing on the patio with my then 9 year old. It was very strange but it only lasted a short time.

The chill that went with those minutes has stayed in my memory.
It didn't get dark where I was but that silence and chill in the air felt disconcerting.

Not everywhere in the south west went dark. It became overcast and was very quiet as the birds stopped singing, but definitely not pitch black in our area

LondonLass2026 · 12/08/2026 12:58

I was in Italy.

The sky turned violet. Absolutely amazing.

I'm the same. In 1999 I was in Somerset so quite a high percentage but not totality. I expect a lot of people will be disappointed tonight.

I was at Portland and I’d agree. To me the nicest part was seeing the camera flashes from the boats out at sea.
But I will look not look this evening.

The 1999 solar eclipse was not total in Twickenham.

Any eclipse map will show you that.

I live in the west of Ireland, I remember it got dull not totally dark

Scarlettpixie · 12/08/2026 13:01

My now ex h went to Cornwall to see it as it was only a total eclipse in Devon and Cornwall. It was cloudy so he didn't 'see' it but it did go dark. Up here (East Mids) the light just went a bit funny - as it will later today.

MyrtleLion · 12/08/2026 13:02

I was in Nottingham and it became gloomy and colder, like a storm was coming. I'm a bit further south and east this time, and it may be darker this time.

impossibletoday · 12/08/2026 13:02

.

To remember that it didn’t really get dark in the 1999 eclipse?
afaloren · 12/08/2026 13:04

I was on Fistral beach in Cornwall and it went totally dark. What I really remember though is the Red Arrows did a flyover. They came down to the beach and gave a hat to a little boy who was crying hysterically because he’d looked up and thought he was going to go blind. Poor little mite.

malloryknox123 · 12/08/2026 13:05

I remember it well. It didn’t get dark. Just a little shadow

HoppityBun · 12/08/2026 13:06

I don’t remember any eclipse making things dark

Hotandpointy · 12/08/2026 13:06

Glad I’m not the only one who remembers it as being a bit crap and underwhelming after all the hype. We did the pinprick and shadow thing and it really wasn’t all that fun.
I feel like I should do it tonight with DS but not sure it’s worth it.

hahabahbag · 12/08/2026 13:06

I was in London so wasn’t dark. But I was in the north for the 2015 one and went very dusky, cries started making a right racket.

forthelasttim · 12/08/2026 13:06

I definitely thought it was unexciting last time. I won't be here for the next so I will make the most of it!

hahabahbag · 12/08/2026 13:08

It’s going to be 94% where I am so hoping for it to be a bit atmospheric, seems most of the town are headed to the same westward spot though!

Mistymagic77 · 12/08/2026 13:08

Also in South Wales as a teen in 1999. It was a definitely an anti-climax. Best it could be described as was grey! I do remember the birds stopping and then restarting which felt eerie. Weather is brighter today though so maybe better?

DeathBanana · 12/08/2026 13:09

Why has everyone completely forgotten about the one in 2015 Confused

that was meant to be a once in a lifetime event. The kids got to start school late. And 10 years later it’s like it never happened
