And that’s the bloody spiders.

The size of my hand.

In my house.

Bastards.

You should have seen the size of the one I saw today, fangs gnashing, willy waiting to rub itself when I’m asleep.

Huge, I tell you, they are huge.

Fruit flies are loving it as well!

The spiders are performing a vital service to society by catching and eating the flies. Leave some of them to do their job - make friends with spiders! Better there are spiders in your house and not horrible disgusting flies!

One to use and one to hold on with. They don’t stop for sex so they can cover two or three miles in the process (I made that last bit up).

😮

No words....

So now as well as being terrified of them I'm going to have to worry about them getting their (microscopic) rocks off on my foot when I'm asleep?

Great bloody great.

😆

InOverMyHead84 · 12/08/2026 08:16

Was expecting this to say biting insects. I've become an all you can eat buffet for the fuckers.

Not seen hardly any to be honest. Only a couple of those ones with a little body, and spindly legs.

allydoobs83 · 12/08/2026 08:25

I'm a full blown arachnophobe, but as long as they a) stay well away from me b) don't do that scary scurrying thing and c) kill the millions of flies that seem to have taken over our home this Summer, I'll tolerate them, even if I don't sleep for a week if I spot one in our bedroom!
If not, they'll be met with a slap from the nearest shoe/other suitable implement
I'll invariably miss the first time, then spend 20 mins looking for it.
To add,we have a cat,who seems to think these horrible creatures are play mates, and a dog that will spot a spider from 10m away, but will be completely oblivious if they get any closer; they could literally be in his nose, and he wouldn't realise.
Have tried to hide my fear from my 7 year old,so that I could call him to remove them, but, unfortunately, he's more of a wuss than I am!

Soporalt · 12/08/2026 08:27

There do seem to be loads this year. I took DH a mug of tea yesterday while he was practising his violin. There was a web over the handle when he picked it up 10 minutes later!

Willy? At that size it was almost certainly female. The big ones are always female.

IDrinkTeaAllTheTime · 12/08/2026 08:33

I don’t mind spiders at all. They eat flies and other horrible insects. I hate those buzzy little fuckers and they make me feel itchy, so spiders are welcome here, though I’ve not noticed too many this year.

LouisaMayAlcott · 12/08/2026 08:34

Can I just say for those who are arachnophobic that London Zoo run an amazing spider friendly course during which you are hypnotised and afterwards, voila! No more worries. I honestly would not have believed it but I went on one this year and now I’m no longer afraid of them. The courses are always booked up really quickly when they’re released I had to go on a waiting list but it was the best £200 I’ve ever spent.

Agreed. I call them nature’s cleaners.

LathkillDale · 12/08/2026 08:42

My cat loves it! She’s terrified of the cold, and won’t go outside between October and April! She looks a bit pained, if it’s 20 degrees outside and gusty!

AnsiPansy · 12/08/2026 08:55

The day before yesterday I was in the shower when I saw, what I thought was a fly. I kept trying to get it out of the flow of the water but then I felt a sting or bite on my leg. When I got out the shower I saw a spider and after googling it seems to be a false widow. Apparently a bite from one of these is not life threatening but now it is quite red and itchy and I'm sure the area is getting more red so off to the chemist for some advice this morning. Hope I survive the day eeek!
Here is a picture of it, so look away if you don't like them x

After getting my flat renovated in 2019 I have had (pretty much) a spider free abode since then. Before the refurbishment there would inevitably be at least one or two big ones every spider season.

Yesterday that run was broken. I woke up and saw what looked like a stain on the curtain...a spider shaped stain. Put the light on and my glasses and sure enough. Not as big as my hand but big enough. I have a spider catching gizmo so used that to set it outside.

Then later I sprayed crawling insect killer all around my open windows. Not to kill anything but to put them off coming in and I hope that works!

Floppyearedlab · 12/08/2026 09:10

Our labrador ate a massive one the other day. I even said to him are you sure you still want dinner?

toomanycoffeecups · 12/08/2026 09:40

Don’t mind the spiders in fact I would send them all a party invite if they agreed to pop in and kill all the fucking flies that have suddenly appeared !

Absolutely savage fuckers hiding in all the nooks and crannies.
And I swear the flies numbers have tripled this year, they're bloody everywhere.

Yes! Flies driving me mad.

Nodirectionhome · 12/08/2026 08:09

I don't mind the spiders. It's their webs I hate. Leaving my bedroom half asleep this morning I got a faceful of web which had been spun across the doorway overnight.🤨

Bastards!

Spiders are there all the time - you just can’t see them. Tbh I have grown to accept their presence because they eat flies and I hate flies the most.

CruCru · 12/08/2026 10:28

Nomoreicecream · 12/08/2026 06:30

Spiders rock !

They keep the fly population under control.

Send them my way !

Yep! Spiders are our friends - they eat flies and mosquitoes. They slow the spread of disease in humans.

CruCru · 12/08/2026 10:29

We have loads of ants but no wasps. Which is sad, I love wasps.

That sounds epic. Have you got a link or can you tell me which brand you used?

I found a company called Flyscreen Queen Ltd, they sell on Amazon and EBay. There's lots of options but I used a low cost version, paid about £10.
