AIBU to stop always moving aside for people in public?

I know that I can’t be the only one this happens to but Jesus Christ, today I’ve had enough I’m usually the one moving out of the way of other people but today I decided to conduct a little experiment… people can move for me for a change, I’m hot, tired and got a sore foot and things didn’t go well lol
on about number 16 shoulder barge!
Im not talking about deliberately getting in people’s way, just holding my line, someone will appear from around a corner and expect me to move, but today I didn’t and bang, we have impact! I’m actually astonished how often it’s happened and didn’t realise how passive I have been up until today.
To be honest, I probably won’t be repeating it, as I’ve found it really stressful. Will just go back to tutting and saying “ don’t worry I will move “ under my breath.
Not even sure what my AIBU is, just wanted to rant as I’m pissed off with rude entitled people everywhere!!

Just want to make it clear, I wasn’t deliberately walking into people or being bolshy, if I was walking and someone coming towards me who veered into my path, I didn’t move like I normally do, I held my line and that’s when we collided.

But in ost cases BOTH people move slightly, and that's enough to avoid collision. You being bolshie is causing the collisions.

mamajong · 11/08/2026 16:44

This is odd to me, its not something ive ever overly thought about. You generally make eye contact with each other and each person moves slightly if there is room. If there isnt one person just moves more. I cant say its occupied much head space.

I just act early and decisively and then the other person normally follows my lead. I always move to the side furthest from the kerb, so that the couple strolling towards me holding hands has to decide whether to go single file or one of them walk in the road, rather than forcing ME into the road. If the person/people approaching are engrossed in their phone and don’t notice me then I wait until they’re a few feet away before yelling “EYES UP!” and that usually startles them into action.

I just act early and decisively and then the other person normally follows my lead.

I do this too, I move out of the way because I'm quick, but unfortunately it seems to reinforce in men's minds that women will always move for them.

MrsShawnHatosy · 11/08/2026 16:48

I swear that some people don’t move and then when I do move, deliberately move in the same direction.

Again, I wasn’t deliberately walking into the path of other people, they were walking across mine and expecting ME to leap out of the way. I don’t know how many times I have to say it or I might actually get bolshy!

This is known as manslamming and was very popular a few years ago in response to academic papers showing that women subconsciously get out of the way for men far more than men get out of the way for women.

There were some very illuminating body cam videos of women doing this - the men were so affronted women didn't just move out of their way.

Nice user name, incidentally. I like the butter beans most.

So it doesn’t happen to you, great 👍

Mehh I’m a feminist but I don’t see this as a men vs. women issue, as I encounter it fairly equally with all sexes and ages. And by moving first, it’s me who gets to decide where I walk (preferably on pavement and not forced into road) which is more important to me than not moving at all.

RunningRhino · 11/08/2026 16:56

Men expect me to move. Even when they are in the middle of the placement. Young people seem to walk 3 a breast and not tuck in to let you past

It's almost always men where I am. Women will say sorry and work around eachother.

I was aged about 46 when i noticed i had become completely invisible and people acted as if i was not there expecting me to get out of the way- that day i stopped always getting out of the way. Young people would often walk intoi me when i had been to my local market I had a shopping trolley with me which they often walked into to their detriment. The other day I was getting of a tube and a young lady attempted to get on before i had got off in the exact same space I was alighting from- clearly she never studied physics succesfully as she would have realised that a greater mass from a height stepping down into the same space was not going to end well for her- but i see it as part of their education.

I push a big wheelchair and have been pleasantly surprised by people not just moving over but creating the easiest path for us, and cars stopping to allow you across the road where they don't have to, people generally being accommodating, but I do find some people seem to think I can shrink it like the Knight bus on Harry Potter 🤣 they just keep coming and I literally have nowhere to go so just stop and they look mildly surprised we haven't just bounced down the curb onto the road out of their way, or onto grass verges etc which are bumpy as hell for the occupant and difficult for the pusher!

Dependsoncontext · 11/08/2026 17:07

I get what you're saying and those that don't clearly don't move out of the way as a general thing. A friend once said to me, you really do need to stop always moving out of the way for other people. I might give your experiment a go and see what happens. The worst thing is you wait for people to come through a tight gap or whatever and they just ignore you. I think the rules of civility are changing and not for the better.

Yetone · 11/08/2026 17:10

I will always step aside for anyone who has young children or who is disabled but I will not step aside for people who walk double file coming the other way when the pavement is only big enough for people to pass in single file. Yes I have walked straight into people. I can’t get over the number of people male and female who would expect someone to step aside do they can carry on walking double file.s

TourdeCrema · 11/08/2026 17:10

I was at the airport yesterday and had two other peoples large suitcases I was moving for them, plus a small back pack for me.

i walked at the edge to be out of the way, man walking towards me empty handed walked right towards me. I just stopped and he eventually worked out how to get around me - took him a while 🤣 I just stopped and waited.

Again, I’ve taken to walking on the inside of the pavement, as I was finding they expected to walk double and me to disappear ( step onto the road) I’ve found they don’t step onto the road but single file and I carry onwards

I will move out of the way for women, children, the elderly or disabled people. Fully capable men can move for me and I don’t care if that unreasonable 😂

Obviously that’s not what she meant 😂😂😂

Monty36 · 11/08/2026 17:22

I do know what the OP is getting at. And often, people each move a little bit to avoid a clash. But it is less and less now. And one person has to move.
The worse is people in a row on a pavement. Chances of anyone moving there is low.

The people I am very upset for are blind people. I have never seen so many people these days who do not get out of the way of a blind person, with a stick or who have an assistance dog. No idea what they teach at school these days but it isn’t kindness or respect for others.

As others have said, moving for elderly, people with mobility issues, mothers with small children etc goes without saying but had the dreaded wall of teenagers coming towards me today and knew resistance was futile 😅

I will not move into the road for anyone and the ‘human shield’ of teenagers will def get me barging into them!

My mother does this as well. It is quite astounding how many people expect an 80
year old petite lady to step aside for them. So very rude. Gen Z are all on their phones.
