My dog may get ill and her insurance is invalid because of my stupidity (please get your dogs boosters)

I know I will get my arse dragged for being so stupid, I've told myself that I'm an idiot 100 times today already.

My dog was exposed to parvovirus last Thursday and I am waiting to see if she becomes symptomatic.

I am terrified. I'm sleeping with her on the couch and haven't left her side since yesterday.

She had her vaccines as a pup but has never had boosters.
I won't make excuses, I am just an idiot. I misunderstood what they were for and assumed we didn't need them.
I never refused them or avoided them specifically. I just didn't know to book them and unfortunately never recieved any reminders or promts from vets (I am saying that not because I think its the vets responsibility but because I absolutely would have said yes to them if it was brought up at a routine appointment that she needed them, I am just pointing out this isn't an anti vaxx thing or a 'waste of money' thing'. I would have gotten them.
Just a genuine fuck up by not doing my due diligence with knowing what she needed.

And now because she has not had her boosters, her very expensive, top tier insurance will be completely invalid for parvo as it is in their T&Cs that any illness that is preventable via vaccines will not be covered if vaccines and boosters are not upto date.
So not only am I worrying that she will get ill but also that she could end up in dog ICU which can run into ££thousands and we are not covered for a penny.

I just wanted to put my situation out there incase someone else wasn't aware of this, so they don't potentially end up in this preventable situation both emotionally and financially.

I'm here through ignorance rather than willfull avoidance and sharing my fuck up might help someone else avoid the same thing.

Sorry to hear this hope she gets better soon.
Many people dont realise this and get a shock when they realise.

Lougle · 10/08/2026 23:58

Don't beat yourself up. Would it be worth asking for a titre test? The parvo vaccs are given 3 yearly but immunity can last longer. At least that way you would know what the situation is.

How old is your dog?

Namenamchange · 11/08/2026 00:02

Thank you for sharing, I didn’t know either. Really hope your dog is ok

I have to beat myself up though because if she does have it I don't know how the hell I will pay for her treatment. I got the best insurance/ cover with preauthorisation and direct pay because I do not have a large savings pot.

She is booked in on Wednesday for a stool sample test, that will be day 6 and if she is infected it should show?

Obviously if she is all clear we will get her vaccines immediately.

She is 6.

Praying your pup is ok.

I personally titre test BUT some positives for you - I've owned 6 dogs and in all those years and for all those dogs I have only had to get a booster twice (when their's titre's came back too low).

ParvoNightmare · 11/08/2026 00:13

She is eating and drinking normally but her temp was 38.1 this morning and had risen to 38.9 this evening but it seems that can be normal for a dogs temp to fluctuate throughout the day. It is a little warmer here this evening and it's still within the normal range.

I thought she had a bit of a strange moment a few hours ago where she jumped down from couch after a nap and seemed a bit disoriented but I feel like I am watching her so closely through the lens of a potential illness that everything looks suspect, even stuff I would usually not notice or brush off as her 'getting up too fast' or just being a silly mare.

She has since been walking about normally, I gave her a few kibbles to check her appetite was still there (lack of is another symptom) and she ate them.

Sorry what is a titre test?

Edit : just googled.

Hopefully she has enough immunity to fight it x

It tests the dogs immunity levels. Most insurance will accept them BUT you must check that and I believe they are more expensive than the vaccines but again do check as I left the UK 10 years ago.

Oh OP I hear you. Our dog was being tested for diabetes. I was asked how long she had been drinking extra water and from my arse I pulled out ‘idk, 6 weeks’.

6 weeks put her in the new insurance’s (switched to save some money) ‘waiting period’ so none of it is covered for life. Insulin, needles, all of it.

ParvoNightmare · 11/08/2026 00:28

Could I just get this thread deleted and repost tomorrow ?

Edit - gone already!
