My dog may get ill and her insurance is invalid because of my stupidity (please get your dogs boosters)

I know I will get my arse dragged for being so stupid, I've told myself that I'm an idiot 100 times today already.

My dog was exposed to parvovirus last Thursday and I am waiting to see if she becomes symptomatic.

I am terrified. I'm sleeping with her on the couch and haven't left her side since yesterday.

She had her vaccines as a pup but has never had boosters.
I won't make excuses, I am just an idiot. I misunderstood what they were for and assumed we didn't need them.
I never refused them or avoided them specifically. I just didn't know to book them and unfortunately never recieved any reminders or promts from vets (I am saying that not because I think its the vets responsibility but because I absolutely would have said yes to them if it was brought up at a routine appointment that she needed them, I am just pointing out this isn't an anti vaxx thing or a 'waste of money' thing'. I would have gotten them.
Just a genuine fuck up by not doing my due diligence with knowing what she needed.

And now because she has not had her boosters, her very expensive, top tier insurance will be completely invalid for parvo as it is in their T&Cs that any illness that is preventable via vaccines will not be covered if vaccines and boosters are not upto date.
So not only am I worrying that she will get ill but also that she could end up in dog ICU which can run into ££thousands and we are not covered for a penny.

I just wanted to put my situation out there incase someone else wasn't aware of this, so they don't potentially end up in this preventable situation both emotionally and financially.

I'm here through ignorance rather than willfull avoidance and sharing my fuck up might help someone else avoid the same thing.

Fantastic news OP! Really happy for you and your pup.

You've had to contend with some right pillocks on this thread too..........🙄

Thankyou :)

Ah, they're just bored and it probably makes them feel big to have a go at someone online. It's usually the types that wouldn't say boo in real life so they spend their evenings on forums grasping their little bit of (perceived) superiority.

Been on MN 20 years, water off a ducks back.

It was rectal bleeding. Blood and poo. Classic advanced parvo symptom.

The more I think about it and research the more angry I am about that.

Surely they sould have known that as a parvo risk or at least a high infection risk in general.

Just slopping a wet mop about and not cordening off the area seems like a real fuck up to me.

I should have picked her up but I didn't even think.

I assumed the poor thing had bowel cancer or something or had been run over

On the basis that they were negligent, I would be expecting free treatment if your dog does get ill. I would email them now and say how unhappy you are with the way they handled it. It's their fault your dog is ill; they should treat for free!

Such a relief, thank goodness.

I hope your nerves are not too badly jangled.

Have a hug don't tell anyone, I have a reputation to keep up

TheGrimSmile · 11/08/2026 22:19

Sorry, just read update. Phew!

Mumofyellows · 11/08/2026 22:33

Lots of people don’t vaccinate, there’s a whole movement of people who don’t believe it’s necessary. I have mine done and they are on pet plans with the vet so they are covered with that and I get a text to remind me when they are due if I were to forget, we travel abroad with ours so they also have rabies jabs.
i really hope you get good news from the test OP, it’s so horribly stressful when you are waiting and watching them like a hawk. I thought one of mine had pyometra at Christmas and the vet wanted me to observe her over night after an antibiotic jab and take her back if she went done hill- thank God she perked right up and it wasn’t pyo but I’ve never felt so sick with worry. She was spayed the following month and it was a huge relief.
Keep us posted, sending positive thoughts for your pup.

Mumofyellows · 11/08/2026 22:34

Just seen the update, fantastic news!

Gribouille · 11/08/2026 22:46

Well you've done some public service in this thread - there'll be lots of people checking their pets' vaccinations this week! 😁

Ah yes those of us who are rightly concerned how someone with multiple dogs doesn’t know they should vaccinate.

Those of us who called OP out on the bullshit over being a sudden expert of Parvo from her googling (which clearly she isn’t as she was wrong on her diagnosis of it ‘so obviously being Parvo’) and her claims proper procedure hadn’t been followed and said it almost certainly wasn’t Parvo and the receptionist won’t just have done what OP claimed if they really thought that.

Those of us who called out the BS over it being Parvo because we knew if it was it would have made the press because it’s so serious.

Those ‘pillocks’ right? But people love a good embellished story, I suppose.

Whilst it’s great her dog will be fine, the fact is OP really screwed the pooch on dog ownership and then terrified herself by becoming an arm-chair expert. If she was actually worried she’d have gone to an emergency vet. But they, there’s no MN drama in that is there?

LuckyHazelFox · 12/08/2026 07:47

It's just another excuse for insurers not to pay out.

Passaggressfedup · 11/08/2026 07:21

It sounds like your dog is going to be alright but if they get ill in the next two days, I would definitely expect the vet practice to treat for free considering they have been negligent and it would be their negligence that caused the infection.

Don't be ridiculous. They haven't been negligent. The disinfectant they use probably does kill parvo.
Every time you take your pet to the vet there is a possibility there will be other animals there with viruses, bit like the doctors waiting room. They wouldn't have known this pup had parvo before seeing it!

ParvoNightmare · 11/08/2026 00:42

She was at the vets for a routine procedure and I went to collect her.
There was a dog in the waiting area that had a sudden haemorrhage, leaving a large puddle of blood on floor.

The receptionist came out with a wet mop and just sort of mopped it up in one go, running the mop all over the waiting area floor and along the hall into the room the dog had been taken into.

Few mins later they bring my dog out who stands all over the area whilst I sort out admin at desk.

Next day the receptionist calls to inform me that they had a confirmed parvovirus case in the day before and so are informing everyone who had an appointment.

I asked if it was the dog that bled out everywhere and she confirmed it was.

I told her my dog had walked through that area directly after and what was used to clean it.

She said it was 'just disinfectant' as they didn't know at that point it was a confirmed parvo case.

Disinfectant is useless against parvo so they basically let her walk through a load of parvo blood/fecal matter.

:(

Blimey - surely the vet have to take some responsibility for that? If my dog was exposed to parvo at the vet surgery due to the staff being careless about cleaning I’d expect free treatment from them!

Thanks, I don't think any of our childhood dogs did either.

I have several friends with dogs who I have told about this and non seem to have up to date boosters and are shocked, a couple are booking them in after hearing this.

Again I know its not the vets responsibility but I find it odd that everytime I go they push flea and worming treatment but have never, in 5 years, mentioned a booster.

This is 2 separate vets because she has her regular cheapie vet for routine things then a fancier one we got referered to once for elective surgery and stayed registered as they do a lot of in house testing and are more modern (but they are the ones it happened at)

DH isn't happy about being charged for the exposure test either but its only £40 and I would rather wait and see if she is infected and battle them for that much larger bill if necessary.

They really should send you booster reminders IMO. Our vet does and our cats have them every year.

Our cats go into a cattery every year, which keeps us on our toes.

I hope your dog is ok, OP, I’m sorry you’ve been through this experience. It sounds like a horrendous experience but it sounds like it might turn out ok. I concur with other PPs that you should switch to a different vet after this.

LizzieW1969 · 12/08/2026 08:17

I’ve just seen your update, that’s great news and such a relief for you, OP.

springintospring26 · 12/08/2026 08:28

Op please done beat yourself up too much. For all my dogs I get the monthly pet plan which gives them their regular flea and worm treatment. As part of the scheme the vets remind me when anything is due including booster vaccines. I’m pretty sure if not reminded I would have forgotten occasionally over the years. I do hope your dog is ok

It can also be argued that it's the OP's fault for not having her dog vaccinated.

Snippit · 12/08/2026 11:16

Yay, brilliant news, 🤩

ParvoNightmare · 12/08/2026 16:46

We went to the vets today and she had the first of her boosters and booked in for her 2nd.

But she couldn't get the parvo test as we needed to bring in a poo sample but they didn't tell us that 😟

So will have to collect a sample tomorrow and take it in.
