My dog may get ill and her insurance is invalid because of my stupidity (please get your dogs boosters)

I know I will get my arse dragged for being so stupid, I've told myself that I'm an idiot 100 times today already.

My dog was exposed to parvovirus last Thursday and I am waiting to see if she becomes symptomatic.

I am terrified. I'm sleeping with her on the couch and haven't left her side since yesterday.

She had her vaccines as a pup but has never had boosters.
I won't make excuses, I am just an idiot. I misunderstood what they were for and assumed we didn't need them.
I never refused them or avoided them specifically. I just didn't know to book them and unfortunately never recieved any reminders or promts from vets (I am saying that not because I think its the vets responsibility but because I absolutely would have said yes to them if it was brought up at a routine appointment that she needed them, I am just pointing out this isn't an anti vaxx thing or a 'waste of money' thing'. I would have gotten them.
Just a genuine fuck up by not doing my due diligence with knowing what she needed.

And now because she has not had her boosters, her very expensive, top tier insurance will be completely invalid for parvo as it is in their T&Cs that any illness that is preventable via vaccines will not be covered if vaccines and boosters are not upto date.
So not only am I worrying that she will get ill but also that she could end up in dog ICU which can run into ££thousands and we are not covered for a penny.

I just wanted to put my situation out there incase someone else wasn't aware of this, so they don't potentially end up in this preventable situation both emotionally and financially.

I'm here through ignorance rather than willfull avoidance and sharing my fuck up might help someone else avoid the same thing.

How do u know she has been exposed? Just wondered must happen a lot and we don’t know!

She was at the vets for a routine procedure and I went to collect her.
There was a dog in the waiting area that had a sudden haemorrhage, leaving a large puddle of blood on floor.

The receptionist came out with a wet mop and just sort of mopped it up in one go, running the mop all over the waiting area floor and along the hall into the room the dog had been taken into.

Few mins later they bring my dog out who stands all over the area whilst I sort out admin at desk.

Next day the receptionist calls to inform me that they had a confirmed parvovirus case in the day before and so are informing everyone who had an appointment.

I asked if it was the dog that bled out everywhere and she confirmed it was.

I told her my dog had walked through that area directly after and what was used to clean it.

She said it was 'just disinfectant' as they didn't know at that point it was a confirmed parvo case.

Disinfectant is useless against parvo so they basically let her walk through a load of parvo blood/fecal matter.

:(

Thankyou so much. She will have a diagnostic test on Wednesday so hopefully I will know properly then.

I can't sleep.

She is licking the air a lot and her belly is making bubbling sounds. Completely normal for her as she is a licker and a wind bag but in context of whats going on I just keep think she is nauseous/ her belly is doing that because of the gastro illness.

I'm not going to sleep at all tonight :(

I get like that too. The fact they can’t talk and when watching them like that you notice every little thing. Not long now and hopefully she will be out of the woods. I don’t blame u at all I’d be the same.

I'd be rather interested in the health and hygiene protocol of the vet in this instance. Yes you've made a mistake, however they should have disinfectant that would eliminate risk to other animals, and the area properly cleansed / closed off, should there be a situation like another dog vomiting blood. Sorry that doesn't help your poorly dogs current situation OP-can you max out a credit card maybe? I know I'd do that in your situation. Sending hugs.

WearyAuldWumman · 11/08/2026 02:05

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you @ParvoNightmare .

It was rectal bleeding. Blood and poo. Classic advanced parvo symptom.

The more I think about it and research the more angry I am about that.

Surely they sould have known that as a parvo risk or at least a high infection risk in general.

Just slopping a wet mop about and not cordening off the area seems like a real fuck up to me.

I should have picked her up but I didn't even think.

I assumed the poor thing had bowel cancer or something or had been run over

I'll find the money somehow if needed. There's no way I wouldn't fight with her.
I just know the quicker you get seen after symptoms the higher the survival risk so Im just sat watching just in case.

Sending lots of love to you and your dog OP! Hope she will be ok.
You post had me worried as I am now wondering if my dog has had all boosters she needs. She is on a pet care plan at her vets so gets her annual routine vaccinations. Is that the boosters you are referring to? Or is there anything extra she is ought to be having?

MyDogTails · 11/08/2026 04:33

Hold tight OP. It might be your dog hasn’t got it at all.. Regarding annual boosters, I think is badly known. I remember a friend flatly disbelieving me until they googled the same thing - their dog was about 5 at the time!

On another angle I am shocked at your vets cleaning and would be furious. I suspect if your dog is infected, they might give discounted rates given their lack of infection control added to the issue.

Passaggressfedup · 11/08/2026 07:21

It sounds like your dog is going to be alright but if they get ill in the next two days, I would definitely expect the vet practice to treat for free considering they have been negligent and it would be their negligence that caused the infection.

bowchicawowwow · 11/08/2026 07:33

Sending a virtual handhold. I’m so sorry your dog was exposed to parvovirus. I worry about hygiene in the vets waiting room too. Hopefully Ddog will be fine and you will be able to step down off high alert shortly.
