Hello lovely mumsnet hive.
so…. I thought we could have a thread of things that made you happy recently. I feel there is so much negative poop out there that maybe this thread will make someone smile or help their day get a little brighter.
My happy thing is my dog. He is a Caucasian Sheppard whom we rescued in September. Now, as a breed they are like no other dogs, unless they are a guardian breed and when we rescued him, he was underweight and came from a bad situation.
he didn’t know what a bone was.
he wanted to eat chips and kebab ( we got a takeaway and he was crazy about getting some)
he didn’t know what toys were. We have tried to get him some but he has no interest.
about 4 days ago I got him a ball that makes a noise from Aldi. £4.99. HE LOVES IT. He is playing like a puppy. He takes it to bed. And honestly, seeing him so happy has made me ridiculously happy!!
I’ll attach pictures of the short monster. ❤️

Thank you for the animal tax, sadly no picture from me.

We rescue ex battery hens, we only have room for six, we had a new girl in a few weeks ago, she was very thin, she didn’t have any feathers, she had a partially healed broken leg and issues with eating as she had a minor beak injury. We were fairly sure she would only last a few days, but at least she would be in a nice environment. Anyway, five weeks later and she has gained 186g, but today while our son was letting them out for pecking time he noticed she had grown her first feather (well the start of it) since moving in. So fingers crossed she continues doing well and gets to have a nice retirement.

That's such a gorgeous story about your dog, OP. We rescued a stray from a violent/neglectful home earlier this year. He's a real outdoor boy, shows very little affection. But two nights ago he crash-landed onto me at 5.30am, kneaded the duvet madly until he found my arm and then kneaded that, purring and purring and rubbing his mouth against my face. This went on for about half an hour. I got up, thinking he wanted breakfast but he turned his nose up at it. He just wanted a good old cuddle and came back to bed to snuggle in under my arm.

Oh this post made me so happy!!! I will keep everything crossed that she thrives. Sounds like she is on the right track. Please do come back and update us. ❤️

Rescues are just a mountain of weirded and wonderful.
Our boy is very independent. Loves his porch and the garden. Very protective over me (not so much of my husband who is 6’2 and built and I feel he looks at him and thinks- meh- big and ugly enough to look after himself)
but when he wants a fuss he turns into a puppy. On the floor, belly up and eyes that just say DO IT!! ❤️
he is just a beautiful boy.

Wow- that’s genius!!! Well done. I wonder the stories they told after getting back to their ‘hub’. 😁

We have a mature beech tree and they have ‘discovered’ it this summer and are enjoying the beech mast. I’m in outer London - the population of parakeeets is massive and growing every year. I’m sure they will be across all of SE England within 10 years.

We're in Hertfordshire and have loads of Parakeets as well. They seem to be thriving in this weather! Unfortunately, they are classified as an invasive pest, which is such a shame as they are rather lovely to look at, especially when they fly over in a squawking flock.

Ok I now want a Caucasian shepherd!! I saw a turtle swimming in the open sea on holiday, that was honestly my absolute highlight - s/he was gorgeous and happily pootling along. Obvs I was too slow to take a photo.

I have taken my 3 foster teens to play cricket 3 days in a row. I have had 3 idyllic days sitting in sunshine, with shade and a picnic. 1 played on Saturday and 2 played Sunday and today. Saturday 7 hours of sitting in basically a field watching eldest play and taking 3 wickets. Sunday youngest teen took 2 wickets and scored 15 runs and middle teen 1 wicket and 12 runs. All fixed well and seemed so happy playing with their teammates in the sunshine. I just think well none of them are home making a mess so there won't be much tidying to do tonight.

@Marinerscove we have only lost one bee in the bird bath this year.... hence the rescue ladders ❤️

Spending time with a lovely dog
Having the first slice from a freshly baked carrot cake
Finding a nice outfit for a forthcoming wedding

I went off-roading ( motor bikes ) on Sunday with my son and grandson , first time ive done it and my only injury was when I went for a wilderness wee and crouched down on a thorn, bloody miracle really, I’d shaved my legs and worn decent underwear in case I needed my clothes cut off by paramedics at any point . I don’t spend much time with them so it was really lovely, im going to save and get a bike, and it can be our thing, im gonna be the cool grandma!!

Anononony · 10/08/2026 19:19

My youngest currently, he discovered a new sport back in may and has found his passion. He's not naturally gifted at it or anything, far from the best in his age category but he's absolutely hooked, and seeing him put so much effort and focus into something makes my heart sing. He gets so much joy from it and has made some good friends, it's so lovely to see

That’s lovely. I leave small saucers around with water for the bees. I hope they use it. I’m allergic to bee stings so I do try and keep away.
it’s so lovely to hear that you care and help the wildlife so much. ❤️
