Hello lovely mumsnet hive.
so…. I thought we could have a thread of things that made you happy recently. I feel there is so much negative poop out there that maybe this thread will make someone smile or help their day get a little brighter.
My happy thing is my dog. He is a Caucasian Sheppard whom we rescued in September. Now, as a breed they are like no other dogs, unless they are a guardian breed and when we rescued him, he was underweight and came from a bad situation.
he didn’t know what a bone was.
he wanted to eat chips and kebab ( we got a takeaway and he was crazy about getting some)
he didn’t know what toys were. We have tried to get him some but he has no interest.
about 4 days ago I got him a ball that makes a noise from Aldi. £4.99. HE LOVES IT. He is playing like a puppy. He takes it to bed. And honestly, seeing him so happy has made me ridiculously happy!!
I’ll attach pictures of the short monster. ❤️

Kittens.
I doubted the decision, doubted taking on more responsibilities, but of my goodness was it the right decision for our family. I am so happy and so are my kids.

Oh my words….. they are ADORABLE. 😍 perfect decision and they will run your house soon enough. 😂🥰

Oh he’s gorgeous op and looks very happy. I hope you have very many years together.

im taking early retirement soon, i cannot wait, im 57, that makes me happy, and ive booked a big holiday for when i leave. That also makes me happy. Also I’ve many things booked with my adult daughter and partner, and spending time with her/them, makes me happy. I went out for a lovely lunch with my husband yesterday, enjoyed some expensive wine. That made me happy.

right now im into experiences. Enjoying myself with people I love.

Aww sounds like you’re making the best of life!! That’s perfect and I am sure once you’re retired you will have so much fun.
all those things sound wonderful and I’m with you- experiences is what makes life beautiful.

enjoy your retirement, be you, do what the hell you want and do it in style. (I have no doubt you will). ❤️

What a beautiful dog!

I love the little joys of life. Today I've have a lovely cuddle in the garden with my tabby cat and it's been cool enough to wear my favourite very soft cardigan.

I am so 100% with you on the cardigan front. I have a jumper and it has more patches than I’ve had hot dinners. Do I still wear it? 100% yes. 😂
and cuddles with a tabby cat sound wonderful.
thank you. He is quirky but a lovely boy and just so much fun. ❤️

Oh @Marinerscove he's gorgeous! I get it - my rescue had been with us for 8 weeks when he slept on his back for the first time. It made me so happy that he was feeling comfortable and relaxed enough to do that.

More recently I sat on the back doorstep at around 9pm, just dusk, while aforementioned dog mooched around the garden. It was still warm, the sheep in the field the other side of our hedge were baaing softly, an owl was hooting in the distance and I watched bats flitting around the garden. There was no other noise at all and it was absolute bliss.

Oh, that sounds so wonderful!! I love countryside noises, as they’re not really noises, they’re a pleasure.
I get what you mean about the belly being out, huge trust if they do and with a rescue after 8 weeks in incredible.
rescues are the best. I have nothing agains anyone buy but now we have Fab I will continue to rescue. He is 60kg of pure muscle, love and opinions. 😂
what breed do you have?

You're very welcome. 😃They do taste really nice too.
Also, thank you Marinerscove for starting the thread. Lovely idea and so nice to see some positivity. 💕

Listened to the Beatles Here comes the Sun, that made me feel happy!

Watching the butterflies in the garden.

Our guinea pigs curled up asleep, so cute

Sounds so peaceful and idyllic. I love butterflies, used to scare me as a child. No idea why.
Guinea pigs are lovely. I’ve always wanted a long haired one. I know nothing about them or how to properly look after them so it’s a good job I’ve never tired. 🤦‍♀️😂

I’ve just had Amtico flooring laid in the hall, it’s a lovely warm oak and is covering the cold grey ceramic tiles chosen by our predecessor. It gives me joy literally every time I see it. I had no idea how depressing that grey was until it was covered up. Am now eyeing the kitchen floor…

Edited

Oooh- we need a picture!!! Grey is just so depressing but seems to be the trend.
I am so glad it makes you happy. ❤️

BARGAIN!!!! I do love a good charity shop find. I have so many weird and wonderful that have come from the charity shop. Love it.

Spending a couple of days with my daughter and family. My OH isn't very well atm so we're not able to go on holiday.
Two days spent with our lovely wee grandchildren really cheered us up.

I am sorry about your husband, I hope he gets better soon.
sounds like a lovely time, swing your daughter and grand children. Children have a lovely way of just making you feel that little bit better and positive. It’s lovely.

Omgoodness, My beautiful caucasian shepherd passed last October and seeing yours cheered me up. Mine was so loving and very stubborn, we miss her so much, even her voluminous amount of moulded fur. We got stopped everywhere for people to pet her.

Harvest time: only about 7 green beans and 2 tomatoes today but it still makes me ridiculously happy.

Speaking as a woman who has managed to kill to cactus plants- I salute you!! That’s way better than I could even hope for.
I once few a pumpkin the size of a tomato. Still taking it as a win. 😂😂

Awwww she was so beautiful!!! I am sorry for your loss.
we rescued Fab and he isn’t great with other dogs, very smart and knows I’m weak so bullies me into treats. 🤣
i am also embracing vacuuming 3/4 times a day and having to brush him most days.
Also, a dinner without some sort of fur would be preferable.
but I would not change him for the world. Best breed I’ve ever owned. 🥰
we are in the West Midlands if you’re not far- you’re always to come and have a CS cuddle. ❤️❤️

A little thing within a big thing. My mother died 10 years ago but my bonus dad is still alive. This last week we have been staying in his home while on holiday in my birth country. He had stocked up with all my favourite things from my childhood. Made me feel very loved.

That sounds so lovely!! Really sweet and I hope you had the best time. ❤️

what breed do you have?

I've always had rescues, we used to foster and our last two, both American bulldog crosses, were failed fosters 😂We lost our boy at 10.5 in August '23 and our girl at 13 in March '24. After the most awful 9 weeks of a soulless house without a dog in it we adopted an 18 month old staffy/sharpei cross who is the sweetest, funniest most idiotic dog ever and I adore him! He looks like a large, ginger staffy but does have a couple of sharpei traits.

Having three weeks off all of us together-Dh, Dd, Ddog and me. We’ve never had that much time off together, i’m sure there will be some arguments along the way 😂 but loved us all sitting on the beach this Monday morning with coffee and donuts.

Your dog is gorgeous and looks very happy :)

Wow- that sounds super cool!! How come you have so many in your garden? I am sort of jealous. 😂❤️

We have a mature beech tree and they have ‘discovered’ it this summer and are enjoying the beech mast. I’m in outer London - the population of parakeeets is massive and growing every year. I’m sure they will be across all of SE England within 10 years.

Through a combination of the Muscular Dystrophy Support Centre and Willow Foundation i got a treat box filled with lots of goodies. It made me very happy. I had to ask for it but the MDSC applied for it for me and I chose all the things from willow foundations lists. I got a mist fan which will really help in the next heatwave, snowies (they didnt last long) a sleep mask, a jelly fish lamp, a body scrub, a blanket (though my husband thinks I have enough) among other things.

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 10/08/2026 17:47

Love your boy OP

Our family suffered a huge tragedy/loss 9 months ago. At the time we had just got a kitten (plus we already had an older cat). They didn’t get on. Didn’t ever actually fight, but the older cat would hiss and just didn’t want to be friends. We were so distracted by grief we didn’t really have the emotional reserve to do much to help them along (please don’t flame me for that - they weren’t suffering).

Last week we took both cats away on a cottage holiday and they just made friends. Cuddled up, played together. We were all really on edge hoping it would last when we returned home. And it has. They are best buddies now and although nothing will ever make me truly happy again, I do get a little spark of pleasure every time I look at them together.

This is a lovely thread. Thank you.

My job got deleted and responsibilty spread across multiple different roles. Im working on handover and was discussing it with key colleagues I've worked with over the past few years and they were so lovely and supportive, saying nice things about the work I've done and how they are glad they'll still get to work with me in my new role. What a lovely bunch. Im looking forward to the change now.

Also, watching my Guinea pigs jumping for joy little little tiny bucking broncos! Too cute. They are currently right next to my desk to distract me from the gloom.

There are some in Glasgow as well! I occasionally see (or more likely hear) them in local large parks.

My new allotment I took on in late June. I am a keen gardener anyway but now I am obsessed. Eating my home grown daily and watching the peas pollinate everything gives me such joy!
