I am actually my family's on call spider catcher as the leggy fuckers don't especially bother me. But a rat or even more irrationally the bottom of the ocean has me almost hyperventilating (always a treat if the Titanic wreck randomly pops up.on the news)!

If it's any consolation then the spider definitely doesn't want to be around you anymore than you it. I think there are some plug in diffusers that waft out some sort of spider deterrent smell. Just a thought as it might be cheaper than estate agent fees!

This is a myth. Tegenaria spiders can and do thrive outside in tree hollows, under rocks and in caves and other dark places. They like houses because they provide easy access to small dark spaces and prey but they are perfectly fine outside. Source the spider keeper at London zoo.

Maybe, but not many people have a cave in their garden! Or even a tree. It might live in your shed.

I don’t think a house spider would voluntarily go outside when it has a nice warm house to go inside.

If we didn't have spiders we'd be overrun with insects that are actual pests.

I don't want them to die but I don't want them in my house so the compromise is that they get gently evicted outside. I'm happy to follow the information given by the spider expert at the world leading spider conservation project at one of the leading conservation zoos in the world!

Spiders kill flies. It boggles my mind how many people seem to be unaware of this. Spiders are excellent for pest control.

Have to say I had the same once and it took me about 4 months to finally use the lounge properly again. Get one of those cordless hoovers and hold it while ur in there incase u see it again

Just to add, I attended "spider school" at London Zoo about 15 years ago. It was quite beneficial, but annoyingly they often hold it at the end of spider season, apparently they do this so the house spiders they use are nice and big by then. It did work for me but if you're not constantly exposed to spiders after, it does tend to wear off, so unfortunately this did happen as it was the end of the season.

Anybody who thinks these phobias are just "silly".... there was a grandmother there who actually accidentally ripped the feeding tube from her premature grandchild whilst jumping up after seeing a spider. That's what finally drove her to seek help. My own friend who took me to the class actually had her cancer stricken mum come round in the middle of the night to shift her fridge freezer out the way to catch one.

There's nothing rational about a phobia.

A can of red Raid spray works wonders. Few sprays and it dies within seconds. Some will blast me on here for killing it but hey it works.
