To think late 40’s is an odd age?

I don’t know, I just feel weird.

Starting to feel older, which is depressing, but also i’m the same person inside, but not.
How can I be that same girl that danced until 6 am, now people barely notice me.

Not making much sense, but does/did anyone feel the same?

Cannot believe I’m nearly 50, didn’t feel this about 40, still felt young and had a baby!

Its totally normal and all part of the menopause.
I was in my early 40s when it hit me (like a ten ton truck) I remember those feelings only too well.

After it, do you feel normal/yourself again?

I read earlier today that in our 40s we’re the oldest of the young people and youngest of the old people. I think that’s accurate. My dc are growing up and life will be very very different in 5 years time… which I’m mostly ignoring and going day by day. The next phase with adult dc is a bit daunting when they spread their wings and I watch on nervously, feeling a little more lonely.

I have dh and friends but it’s an odd stage.

With the help of HRT.

Yes, that’s probably an accurate description, the oldest of the young people

I found my 40s difficult, I was very tired, coping with full time work, my son’s behaviour (due to special needs), and clearly perimenopausal but not realising.

Im early 50s now and absolutely loving being this age! Im doing strength training, taking. HRT and just feeling happier in my skin.

If you can, please take HRT.

FleshLiabilities · 08/08/2026 20:44

Well 47 and 49 are definitely odd ages.

Piemam · 08/08/2026 20:47

Yeah, I agree, but with your username, @Theyareblaringoutshakiraagain, what are you doing when they're blaring out Shakira? Dancing to Hips don't Lie, Whenever, Wherever? I'm still firmly mid not late but I can see it o'er horizon ...

Piemam · 08/08/2026 20:47

Oh, @FleshLiabilities I just got your joke, ha ha 😁

😂

Omg this cracks me up more than it should. Maybe a sign that I'm peri?

And yes I think oldest of the young people and youngest of the old people describes it really well!!

namechange6766333545544 · 08/08/2026 20:53

I find it a really odd age as well. Perimenopause has hit me emotionally more than I expected it to. I have had a lot of nostalgia for my teen years, even though I’d never want to relive them! But nostalgia has been a big part of peri for me. In my mind I am younger than my actual age. When I dream, I am about 30. I never dream about being my actual age. It’s all very weird and unexpected.

Magicpaintbrush · 08/08/2026 20:54

I feel the same OP, at 47. And recently widowed. I don't recognise myself or the world I live in anymore.

honeyfox · 08/08/2026 20:57

I can identify, I'm 48 and recently started on HRT. I find myself often thinking about my childhood days and really missing the people who aren't here anymore. Also coming to terms with not having had children and how to envisage myself and my life going forwards.

Theyareblaringoutshakiraagain · 08/08/2026 21:04

The nostalgia is a huge part for me too. Time really does go by so fast.

Sitting outside, wanting them to turn it down. See, getting old and boring!

Same here, late 40’s. I drove through my old university town a few months back and the strong feeling of ambition and independence and possibility was palpable as the memories of the girl I used to be when I was there.
once home I looked through an old photo album. I feel like it was a completly different person in another life!

Curleywoo · 08/08/2026 21:09

Very normal.
Also to suddenly become very away of how precious your health is as you hear of sad stories about people you know.

It helps to refocus you and count your blessings.
It really is all about your health as you enter the "decades of sniper alley", according to my lovely GP.

CrikeyMajikey · 08/08/2026 21:11

I’m 58 and still don’t feel old. My
body mostly tells me otherwise, but I ignore it.

bearfood · 08/08/2026 21:15

I feel the same. I’m 49 and it’s been the most bizarre year. My youngest is about to start secondary school but I’m also a nan and have been for several years. I’m an old mum to my youngest but a cool young nana to my grandkids. I don’t understand how I can be 50 soon when I rarely feel like the ‘adultiest adult’ in any situation. My career has really taken off in the last few years, yet I can retire in less than a decade! I just keep reminding myself it’s a privilege to grow old. Even if I don’t recognise myself in the mirror anymore.

TeaFizzy · 08/08/2026 21:18

It’s been a weird decade for those of us in our late 40s now.

Doesn’t seem that long ago since I turned 40, yet 50 seems alarmingly close. I think quite a few years were lost to COVID / getting back to normal again after that, and now things have properly settled down you think “how am I this old?”

I’m the first of my friends to lose a parent, and my parent was definitely elderly when they died. None of us have preschoolers any more. Some are getting to the age where the kids are getting married; some are still doing the school run.

I don’t think I’ve known such a variety of experiences with a group of people the same age.

ByRoseBiscuit · 08/08/2026 21:25

It’s really interesting to read this thread. I’m early 40s and definitely perimenopausal, my hormones and cycles are all over the place, and the nostalgia at the moment is strong! Pining for when my children were little, I enjoyed them so much and although I would absolutely hate to have a baby now or young children at this age, I really miss those times! Must be a common thing at this age!

Ventosauris · 08/08/2026 21:49

47 and this year I really struggled with my body and getting it into swimwear I like. When trying on every bathing suit and bikini in my closet I noticed skin flaps on my back. Never saw them before. Comes with middle age aparently. I am not overweight, not toned or sporty either. But not being overweight is not enough anymore...
It's all just so, older. My hips hurt on bad matrasses in holiday resorts.
I sweat. A lot.
Will these things get worse when sixty and even more worse when seventy? I wouldn't be able to go on holiday anymore, or only if I bring my own mattress? On the plane....

OnTheLizzieLine · 08/08/2026 21:54

I’m 49 and it’s only just hit me.

I didn’t bat an eyelid at turning 40 and I’ve felt great during my 40s, even with perimenopause symptoms occasionally kicking my arse. Never been fitter. Career taken off. More confidence.

But I suddenly feel really weird and quite sad about the passage of time.
