it's petty.
it doesn't matter.
nothing anyone can say will make me change my mind, but here goes:

There is a drawing competition at the school this afternoon. DD2 is desperate to enter so has been practising all week.

You have to take in their drawing with their name and age on the back.

It is dd2's 4th birthday TOMORROW.

Another mum has said that I should put her age as 4 so that she gets "marked" in the four year old's category as it makes it fairer.

Well.... for starters, she isn't four, she's three. For seconds, I don't think they'll be having categories quite that specific - perhaps under fives, six to tens, that sort of thing, and oh, did I mention... she's not bloody four yet!

Now I know in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter, and I know that she's a daft bint, so, not for any AIBU reason other than to give you all a laugh (and to see if anyone does actually think she is right)...

am I being unreasonable for putting my daughter's age as three?

YANBU. You would be unreasonable to say she was 4 when she wasnt.
The other mum sounds a little crazy.

Uriel · 27/06/2008 09:48

YANBU. But your friend is.

put 3 years and 364 days - or was it a leap year this year? Best to check, I'd say.

Perhaps you could comment in a very loud voice when you see the other mother hand her child's entry in that 'she/he must have had a little adult help with that surely, that or she should be whisked away to art college right now and not mistake!'

Sorry, feeling a little vindictive this morning ! YANBU, the women is obviously watching out for her PBF and living all her childhood complexities and insecurities through her child. Hmmm, a little early to rant I feel, perhaps I have had too much coffee already...

MummyDoIt · 27/06/2008 09:54

I cannot believe it even occurred to the other mum to mention this. What the heck does it matter? Does she have a child in the three-year-old category and is so fiercely competitive that she wants to remove potential competitors? The woman's an idiot!

2point4kids · 27/06/2008 10:01

She sounds like a competitive freak!

Ask her if she is putting her childs exact age on the drawing too (3 years, 4 months, 1 week and 2 days lol)

AMumInScotland · 27/06/2008 10:07

YANBU - what a barking idea! How many days/weeks before a birthday does one become that age? Er, none. She's 3 until her birthday. If her birthday had been last week, then you would have put "4", and accepted the fact that she was in the same group as the 4.11s

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/06/2008 10:09

you could write 4 today on the back and they might think...ahhh,it's squonk's dd's birthday today let let her win !

margoandjerry · 27/06/2008 10:10

god, it's terrible what's going on in Zimbabwe isn't it...

fryalot · 27/06/2008 10:13

maybe it is me... have just got an email from mumsnet (yes, MUMSNET!!!) saying "now your child is 4"

She isn't!

I shall read that email tomorrow

She shouldn't be lying about her age to appear older until she is at least 13 in the off licence
