Things you could afford but don't bother with/choose not to spend on.

Inspired by the cleaning thread.
What could you afford but don't have/do?

A cleaner, just do it ourselves.
A long haul holiday. No interest.

Anyone with any sense can see the difference. And expensive clothing doesn't have to have the brand plastered all over it. If you haven't owned luxury clothing then it's easy to say you can't see the difference but to anyone who has, it's night and day.

Cheap denim is especially crap.

You poor woman did the peasants not notice how much you spent? Nobody cares except you! Your the person that always has to say the brand got to make sure we know you spent lots 😂😂😂😂 most designer shit is made in China these days your not getting anything special because it cost more

Regular haircuts. Ever since the prices sky rocketed during Covid, along with everything else (and never went back down 🙄), I decided to stop going to the hairdressers on a regular basis. I now just go to local the walk in one about once a year at most. My hair isn’t in bad condition because I don’t mess around with it so I don’t feel like it really looks any worse.

Are you quite well? You sound very angry. You're also very wrong.

Agree with this.

During my latest appointment they wanted to charge me extra just for running straighteners through my hair after blow drying it. Never been charged for this before. Absolute robbery.

New cars. Never had one and could easily afford but seems a waste of money and I’m not interested in the status value.

Double glazing. It looks horrible and I don’t want to lose my lovely stained glass. I’m sure it would make my house warmer but I’m willing to suffer.

Getting nails done. Don’t see the point and they would probably last 5 minutes on me. I do get my hair done regularly but don’t dye it as I don’t want to be caught in a maintenance trap.

Like a previous poster I’m not interested in eating out at mid range restaurants as I can often cook much better at home.

I always feel that it’s only ever the cook themselves that thinks their food is ‘better ‘ than a restaurant. Everyone else is probably secretly longing to be eating out !

They can pay then.

What I begrudge most is being charged more for a simple trim because I’m a woman, than a man would. I can’t believe in this day and age that they’re still allowed to do this.

It just proves it’s a massive rip off.

Holidays. I have no interest in them. I am on annual leave and kept being asked where I'm going. To the sofa - see you in two weeks.

And I thought it was just me!

I’m interested in other places, history and culture, but I prefer it in the telly.

I do realise this is heresy nowadays 😄

But so many wonderful places closer to home as well. No need to be so judgy.

At some point all of the EU blends together and doesn't look all that different

Er…not in my experience. Cultural differences in Europe still exist despite the constant pressure to homogenise everything.

Vice la difference! Or is it ‘le’?

Depends on the restaurant, surely.

onpills4godsake · 11/08/2026 12:14

Cleaner
designer bags and clothes
coffee
over priced supermarkets - I get an odd box or M&S for fruit and veg and Aldi for the rest

aLFIESMA · 11/08/2026 12:22

Brand new, state of the art designer puppies. I prefer a slightly worn in little chap who's now looking for forever love. Rescue is the best breed!

Jardenalia · 11/08/2026 12:29

Eating in pubs and restaurants - 9 times out of 10 I am disappointed and have indigestion as well (never get it at home where I cook from scratch)

Yes you make a good point. But a trip to let's say Kerala would give you a widely different experience than trips to Paris, Rome or Munich.
