Friends mocking my engagement :(

My fiance proposed to me this week after 3 years together, just a day after our 3 year anniversary!

He had planned to propose in his home country when we visited a few months back but it was very busy seeing all this family (his mum is British before any comments about wanting a UK visa!).

We had a stressful time coming back and I had been prepping for a new job interview. He came home from work around 9, told me to put some shoes on as he wanted to show me something…

He drove me to a road and got out and said “this is the first place I ever said I loved you” and then proposed, with a gorgeous delicate ring!

I was on cloud 9, so happy. I always told him I didn’t like big proposals and I’d been embarrassed if someone saw, so this felt perfect and quite romantic.

Saw my best friends today. Both of them were saying how cheap it was, how it was thoughtless and that they’d be sick if they were proposed to in their pyjamas (like I was), and that he could have done something more romantic. They were laughing about it as well.

It’s made me really really sad. Aibu to think that the proposal was quite thoughtful… the first place he said “I love you” is quite sweet?

Honestly, I love this op - it's thoughtful and non-performative. I would distance yourself from these people - their values are very different from yours and your fiance. Congratulations!

Rosesanddaffs · Yesterday 17:18

Well stuff what they think, as long as you are both happy, that’s all that matters xx

Lemonandlimetrees · Yesterday 17:18

What a thoughtful, romantic proposal! I would seriously question their values and grasp on the world. The only people I've come across who would feel 'sick' being proposed to in their pyjamas are women who think a proposal is something you post on instagram and, I suspect, have shallow relationships. Judgy? Yes.

Congratulations.

Your friends are horrible. My DH proposed to be in my bath robe in our kitchen! After 9 years together. I was surprised and mentioned we were going to New York a few weeks later but he said he would’ve been on edge the whole time

GingerBeverage · Yesterday 17:24

Hope you have someone else in mind for maid of honour because those two won't do a good job.

Yep123 · Yesterday 17:27

Leave your friends to their bullshit drone Dubai proposals and for God’s sake don’t be influenced by them when you’re planning your wedding.
Be happy, both of you ❤️

Oh thank you for all the responses I didn’t expect so many ☺️

I am very happy and my fiance is too! My parents are absolutely over the moon.

I saw a comment about judgement of character as these are my best friends. They’re my oldest friends from primary school, and our mums are all very close. I see them 2/3 times a year. One friend is married, other one single.

They might be your oldest friends, but they are definitely not the nicest. Their comments were staggeringly bitchy and unkind.

Your fiance sounds absolutely lovely and thoughtful by the way, and congratulations on your engagement.

Totaldramallama · Yesterday 17:49

Your friends are stuck up cows. DH and I agreed it was a good time to get married while sat on our sofa (no big proposal) then got married in Vegas with no one there except our daughter. This is what we wanted and I have no interest in big romantic gestures. That does not make a marriage

Sassylovesbooks · Yesterday 17:52

You need new friends. A proposal of marriage is exactly that, not an Instagram moment. Your boyfriend chose a place that meant something to you both. Surely that's the whole point??!

Your friend's might very well want grand gestures, lots of people and photographers at their wedding proposals, that's their choice. However, that's not real life is it, it's a performance to share on social media.

Your boyfriend's proposal was sincere and genuine. In my mind, that's what matters, not where it was or what you were wearing!

My husband proposed in my childhood bedroom at my parents house!! He bought a large heart shaped box of chocolates, took the middle chocolate out, and replaced it with the diamond engagement ring. Yes, I was dressed up to go out though as it was St Valentine's Day!

LadyRoughDiamond · Yesterday 17:53

What a beautiful, unique, romantic proposal; congratulations OP.

Now, let’s look on the bright side, you can save a fortune on wedding reception catering by not inviting these morons. Save the rest of your wedding planning and big day for your real friends.

Bourneyesterday · Yesterday 17:55

Just enjoy your lovely fiancé and stop thinking about how your friends aren't nice.

RampantIvy · Yesterday 17:55

According to the votes at least 38 posters think the boyfriend should have made an Instagram proposal.

What is wrong with them?

1983Louise · Yesterday 18:03

Keep your man, dump your friends..........

SauvignonBlanche · Yesterday 18:12

Sounds lovely OP, he sounds like a keeper!
I hate those ‘performance proposals’. I’m so glad mine from DH was just unplanned and spontaneous.

JayJayj · Yesterday 18:28

I think it sounds perfect!! Very romantic and special to you both. I don’t see the point of over preformed proposals.

AlohaRose · Yesterday 18:30

Well I guess that saves you the bother of having them as bridesmaids.

MerryUmberHedgehog · Yesterday 18:30

Very mean of them.

Rufusisturnedon · Yesterday 18:35

Congratulations OP! This is lovely.
they are incredibly rude to comment anything like that. Your response is what they should validate and support as your long term friends

ex friends I think

will you tell them how much it wasn’t kind ?

Roselilly36 · Yesterday 18:37

Many congrats, what lovely news.

they sound v jealous to me, the more I move though life, I have learned the thing that makes people more jealous than anything else in life, are others in good relationships.

Whatifitallgoesright · Yesterday 18:41

Beware of these friends. That was a spiteful thing to say. Don't risk them as bridesmaids.

MadamDicey · Yesterday 18:41

Congratulations on your engagement 🎉🎉🎉🎉
You deserve better friends

Mndhell · Yesterday 18:57

My husband proposed to me as I was crawling into bed in my winsy PJs after a night shift! I didn’t give it any headspace tbh. Thankfully years before all the Instagram bollocks!
Edit to say Congratulations 🥳

fivepastmidnight · Yesterday 19:01

They are horrible and not your friends. even if they would have preferred a different proposal they should have kept their opinion to themselves I would say to them I feel very differently about both of you now for not being happy for me about my proposal and being nasty so don't expect an invite to the wedding because you probably would have something to say about that too . He proposed somewhere meaningful. congratulations.

Dahlia1234 · Yesterday 19:19

Your friends are dicks. The end. Oh and congratulations on your engagement!

Busylizzy87 · Yesterday 19:22

Any proposal from the person you love and want to marry is the perfect proposal.

I'd be happy to have a ring drawn on in biro if it meant I got to marry the love of my life.

Your friends are not friends if that is their reaction.

His proposal was perfect for you and that is what matters. It shows how much he loves you, that those words were important to him, and that he knows you really well.

I'm sorry the thoughtless people in your life have taken the shine off the moment. I'd think twice about including them in the wedding if that is how they behave.
