AIBU to mention neighbours' cat waking us early while they're away?

Would you say something to your neighbour?

We're in a semi detached with the doors right next to each other when they go away on holiday they leave their cat at home and have someone come morning and evening to feed it. The issue is they let it out at night and it comes home early in the morning around 5:30am and meows to be let in, it's so loud and with the window open it's waking us up. Would you text the neighbours or let it drop as it's only whist they're on holiday? The person doesn't normally come to let them in until 9am.

Yeah, the cat would sort you out and shit all over your garden.

Why on earth do people put their cats out at night?! More chance of them killing birds and getting hit by cars.

I don't have a problem with people using water to train cats, and would happily tell someone who had a cat they didn't want in their own garden to throw water on it. I'd be a bit worried about doing it in this situation in case the lesson the cat took wasn't 'I shouldn't meow' but 'I shouldn't come home again'. This fear may be based on my own cats, who I think are unusually dim.

Yeah don’t throw anything at the cat. That’s a dick move, all it wants is to be let into its house. It shouldn’t be locked outside all night and I would be surprised if you neighbours knew that was happening.

I'd play ignorant and ask if the cat is OK after it woke you so early making a horrendous noise. Say it sounded really distressed and you didn't get to talk to the person coming in to feed them.

There could be a cat flap.

We have one, which our cat is perfectly capable of using when he chooses. He often goes out through it during the night but in the mornings he won’t come back in that way but instead miaows outside a different door asking to be let in (and we check every day that the cat flap works in both directions)!

I’d probably play it like this.

I wouldn’t throw water at it just for meowing to get in. Poor thing is probably wondering why the owners aren’t responding.

I do use a water pistol if I catch cats in my garden. I don’t want them there but I wouldn’t ever discourage one from being in its own garden.

Talk to them -they either need to ask the sitter to leave a window open for the cat (or get a cat flap), or ask them keep it in at night.

Might be rented? I don't and can't have a cat flap for our cat.

The cat will be discommoded but fine. It's warm at night currently.

All you’ll be doing is letting the know you’re pissed off, so message them if you want

Oh so if they crash their car on the way to work after 10 consecutive nights of being woken at half 5 thats ok is it? Its not your call if theres no need to or not, it's not happening to you. Maybe they can't get to sleep by 9.30pm to get 8 hours. Maybe one of them is a surgeon? Would you like a sleep deprived surgeon operating on you? Or maybe they drive for a living?

Well if the poor thing is used to coming back at 5:30, is used to getting let in and being fed but instead has to wait 3.5 hours he’s probably starving! I would say something to the neighbours if you can but not in a complaining way- ‘I’m a bit worried about your cat he is having to wait till 9am to get let in and fed and he sounds distressed’. They might ask the sitter to come earlier but if they don’t not much you can do. Be careful they don’t ask you to do it instead! Better have your excuses ready if you don’t want to…..
