to be annoyed about this situation with neighbour and her dog?

I’m lying awake because I don’t know what to do about this situation.

On Sunday our neighbour came to see us visibly upset. Her mum had been taken into hospital and she had been told to get there asap. Her mum lives in Scotland and we are in the South of England so she was panicking about getting there on time and also about who would look after her dog. We helped her book a flight as she was in a state shaking and in no state to think properly. She asked if we could have her dog for a few days. Reluctantly we agreed but said we were leaving to go on holiday on Friday evening so she would need to make other arrangements by Friday morning for him. We went and collected the dog and he has been with us since. We have our own dogs and they are all getting on well.

Our neighbour text me on Monday to say her mum had died. We had a brief text conversation and obviously I said how sorry I was to hear about her mum.

I text her on Wednesday morning to say that I know she has a lot to deal with but we really need to know what she’s doing about her dog as we are due to go away. I didn’t hear anything so I text her again yesterday to ask what she wanted us to do with the dog and got a text from another of her relatives from her phone saying our neighbour is very upset and isn’t in the right place to sort this out. I replied to say I understood but that when we agreed to have the dog, it was on the condition that she made other arrangements for the dog by Friday morning as we are due to go on holiday. I didn’t get a reply. I tried to call last night but it went to voicemail. I had already called our nearest boarding kennels who do have space so I told her on the voicemail that I could drop him at kennels but she needs to give them her payment details. I still haven’t had a reply from my neighbour.

What do we do? I’ve asked other neighbours and they won’t have him. My parents are having our dogs while we are away but are not willing to take the neighbours dog as well.

A friend has suggested I drop him at our local vets which is the vet my neighbour uses but I don’t think they would be ok with that. Another friend said if it comes to it to call the rspca, explain the situation and say he’s basically been abandoned.

I’m so stressed. I know my neighbour has lost her mum but we are not missing our holiday.

Take it into the country and let it go in a field. Tell the neighbour it ran away. Someone will look after it or it will eventually find its way back while you are away.

WTAF have I just read???!!

Gloriia · 07/08/2026 17:02

The poor dog. Not pps fault obviously but what kind of person leaves their pet and just expects neighbours to keep it despite them knowing they were going away?!

If they are happy to neglect their dog like this you wonder what kind of a home life it has poor thing.

So you’ve pretended that you don’t know who’s dog it is? You are heartless OP, you have just added horrible stress to your neighbour. I would have sucked up the down payment for kennels. Now your neighbour is going to receive calls from vet and dog warden

It sounds like she did that yes - but the OP is not heartless. The Dog's owner refused to do anything about the dog, even although she KNEW the OP was going on holiday. Then OP has ensured the dog isn't abandoned to fend for itself and it is in safe hands. Entirely the fault of the owner ( and the relative who rang the OP to hassle her)

Can’t believe what I have just read. You’re worse than the dog’s owner! Some people should never be allowed to have a pet - and you are one of them.

MmeDubois7 · 07/08/2026 17:07

Would your parents take the dog?
I assume kennels would be full?
Another neighbour?
Dog charity - but tell her first.

Take him to the kennels. It’s the only option. You can’t drop him at the vets!
You will have to pay for now until she gets back to you. If she has an ounce of morals then she’ll pay you once everything is over. The kernels may be willing to take payment on her collecting.
Otherwise put a message on local Facebook pages looking for dog sitters.Again you will have to pay for now but cheaper than kennels.

No WAY should you pay. Not your responsibility

What a cruel suggestion

Something isn’t sitting right here. No committed responsible dog owner would do this and not even enquire how thier pet was, even in a state of grief. Could the initial conversation and distress have been a show because she wanted to go away and couldn’t find anyone to take the dog?

When my late DH was rushed into hospital with a major stroke, I still found time to contact my dog-walkers and ask them to take my dogs for a few days.

The Op wouldn't be allowed to put the dog in kennels as she would need to provide vaccination records, etc.

The owner should receive these calls from the vet and warden as she's responsible for this dog. The Op did the right thing, she left the dog in a safe place and now the owner has to step up and take responsibility or she'll lose her dog.

It might be better for the dog to go to a new home, if this is how little his owner cares for him.

The dog is at the vet and they said they would scan and contact his owner if he has a chip. One of the receptionists recognised him so they know the owner is a customer. I’ve blocked my neighbours number so she can’t contact me to complain. Thanks for all the advice.

Why would they only contact the owner if the dog has a chip? Wouldn't they would know the name and phone number of the owner from you?

Thisismynewname23 · 07/08/2026 17:20

I cannot believe the cheek of her! You did her such a favour, she could easily have sorted the situation especially when you took the time to find kennel x

As an aside, I always read RTFT as 'read the fucking thread', not 'full thread' as that is the level of exasperation it produces!

I am going to be adding an extra "F" now!

But the OP could provide the name and phone number of the dog owner to the vet. How does this UK GDPR come into play?

She’s obviously never going to pay any kennels bill.

You don’t know this at all. FFS!

Isitevensummer · 07/08/2026 12:29

Could you also try the Cinnamon Trust? They are specifically for situations like this

They aren't at all. I've been dog walking for The Cinammon Trust for years. They are a charity specifically aimed at elderly, housebound and terminally ill people & their pets. Elderly people also need to be registered with the charity before they go into hospital/die/need help for their relatives to access their services. The lady whose dog I have been walking for 6 years via this charity can't even get them to have her registered dog while she goes into hospital as there aren't enough foster homes in my area & just not enough volunteers.

Edited

The vet has to comply by law with the UK GDPR.

timtamsarebetterthanpenguins · 07/08/2026 06:53

Plenty of them do.

They won't, rescues everywhere are full up, no decent rescue will have an empty kennel. And the OP is not the legal owner so cannot sign the dog over to a rescue. It's a very tricky situation for the OP but there's no easy answer.

Well done OP- as I said upthread I've been in a similar situation as the bereaved pet owner and would never have put this onto someone else then, worse, refused to communicate. Have a fantastic holiday! 😊

Don't be so utterly ridiculous. The OP was put in an impossible situation. Bereavement and grief does NOT negate the responsibility of the dog's owner; many of us have had to deal with sudden family illness and death and still had to make arrangements for our pets. There is absolutely no fault to lay at the OPs door.

Totally agree! And let's not forget that if OP had paid a down payment (even if OP could give the vaccination, worming etc docs- which is highly unlikely!) the chances are OP would have ended up liable for the full cost because I'm guessing said neighbour would say "I never agreed to that!"

This response is so ignorant I dont even know where to start.

You do realise you cant just rock up to boarding kennels and just give them a random dog right? you have to book well in advance, and you have to provide proof and evidence of vaccinations and insurance details etc. They wont take unvaccinated dogs for obvious reasons so you have to provide documentation.

Good grief, at least know something about what you are talking about before you start wanging on about some rubbish, it makes you look like an absolute fool
