I can’t comment on the anti depressants but if he was your soul mate he wouldn’t have left you! Your soul mate is still out there looking for you.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 05/08/2026 19:48

Were you already suffering from depression? They may not help like you think if not. But if you are struggling mentally now speak to your GP and see what they advise. It’s normal to feel awful right after a break up though, it’s really tough but it should ease over time. Try and lean on friends and family during this time. And remember your soul mate wouldn’t have left you, this person was not the one for you

Ghostiescotchie · 05/08/2026 19:48

I don’t think it’s a good idea. I’m sorry this has happened to you, but they were NOT your soulmate because if so they wouldn’t have left you.

Dont beat yourself up and end up medicating yourself. Give yourself time to get angry , cry. Take it a day at a time. You’ll get through it and be stronger for it but it can take time.

First post nails it op. I’d say hold off on them for a while and do the usual, cry your soul out, listen to Olivia Rodrigo and Alanis Morosette and Taylor Swift, read, go places you’ve missed going, talk to friends/ family. Pamper yourself x

If it’s not even 24 hours since, you are being very hasty. This pain is inevitable but it also subsides if you let it.

cambiodenombre123 · 05/08/2026 19:53

Sorry for your distress OP. I tried a herbal supplement, rhodiola, for a few months shortly after my divorce. It really helped me x try and take care of yourself during this time. Rest even if you can't sleep, fresh air and hot sweet coffee if you can't eat x

This awful thing only happened to you yesterday and it sounds like you weren't expecting it at all. It's normal to feel utterly devastated and like you don't know how you will cope. I don't think anti depressants are the answer xx

PollyBell · 05/08/2026 21:32

No it doesn't work that way

They only work if you’re clinically depressed or anxious.

WhatMe123 · 05/08/2026 22:10

antidepressants can take up to 3 months to take full impact. The change is slow acting unfortunately and aren’t take for an immediate impact. They don’t dull out pain from a loss they simply help symptoms of depression or anxiety so no they wouldn’t help in the way you would like them too at the moment I’m afraid

concertinacornflake · 05/08/2026 22:24

A GP wouldn't prescribe for understandable heartache, antidepressants are for longer-standing conditions.

ElfridaEtAl · 05/08/2026 22:31

I’m sorry you’re going through this OP, break ups are bloody awful.
As a PP said, unless you’re clinically depressed or anxious etc, they won’t help.
You just need to feel what you’re feeling and work through it. Which when you’re in the throes of it is much easier said than done I know.
I’m a big believer in what’s meant for you won’t go past you. This relationship wasn’t meant to be and there’s better things coming your way.

But, in the meantime, has he left anything behind at yours you could smash? ā™„ļø

Anti depressants work for depression, not for unhappiness. Hugs.

Yes, this is absolutely not what they are for

You are having a normal response to something bad happening

You would feel exactly the same if you were already on them

They take a very long time to bed in and you can have awful side effects

I was on them for decades before coming off them. I really can't understand why someone wants to take them unless they are ill.

I can confirm that breakups and bereavements and all the other shit of life feels awful when you are taking these.

don't make things harder by making them medical.

Dinosweetpea · 05/08/2026 23:01

I was prescribed diazepam and sleeping tablets (short term) after a particularly bad break up. I did end up on antidepressants (alongside therapy) but I had basically had a breakdown and wasn't functioning at all.

SENsupportplease · 06/08/2026 18:00

I dunno, I was put on sertraline for anxiety (undiagnosed autism!) and it dulled all feelings. Sadness, anger, happiness, grief, libido. It did help things to feel more manageable while I learned coping strategies.

leggingsbotoxmatcha · 06/08/2026 18:06

Yes, they can help OP. I was prescribed them after my husband had an affair and left. But you still have to do the ā€œworkā€ to move on properly, however that looks for you - therapy, journaling, exercise, friends, self development books, ice cream and rubbish films etc.

It will get better, I promise. Be gentle and patient with yourself.
