To ask for your most unhinged packing lists?

Trying to cover all bases.

I’m not talking the “oh yeah I whack a teabag in my baggage”, i’m talking the type of stuff most people would never dream of taking.

My bil used to pack his head shaver. It was in an enormous and heavy case. Why he didn't spring for 15 quid and buy a smaller and lighter one o do not know.

Logically I know this. But I'm a nervous flyer and it has a placebo effect.

We had to take the tortoise on holiday with us. We got let down by someone who was going to look after her (long story, still not over it) so she had to come with us.
The amount of stuff she needed- cage, indoor run, lights, heat mat, bedding, straw etc took up more room than me! We were going UK only though, and we've taken her a couple of times since.

I have taken an extension lead since I went to a hotel in Tuscany where they had not a single spare plug. Checked under the desk, bed side shelves which were attached to the headboard and other places you could think. I was on a tour holiday and others and they had similar issues. I pulled the plug to the standard lamp to charge things.

Okay, sorry, shouldn’t have mentioned it 🫣

Jesus how can you all be arsed though with all this faff if you are going abroad? Im literally the other way (fortunately partner the same). We throw stuff in a bag that day or night before, and its those mega small cases with the bare minimum. We are always fine. I think it would put me right off going away if i felt i had to pack to this extent.

My mum is like this though. I think shes mental.

I have the essentials in my suitcase ready to go - spare eye mask, plastic bag, ear plugs type stuff - and a roll of masking tape! I hate it when there's a TV or fridge light shining out in the night so now I cover the light up with a bit of tape!

Great idea! I wake up ‘like a husk’ as DH says, with air con so will try this next time.

Wouldn't it be easier to just take your own pillow cases?

Sticky tape and lots of bubble wrap for bringing souvenirs home. A pair of shorts and a fleece with lots of big pockets as well as a lightweight folding shopping bag so I can carry lots of stuff through check-in and the plane in my clothing, then stick it in the bag for a while so as to not have my shorts fall down in the airport in front of all the other passengers. I rarely holiday due to financial constraints and the cost of hold luggage isn't really an option, so I'm now an expert in getting 10 days worth of clothing, books and assorted tat into a rucksack - the lightweight hiking t-shirts and quick-drying sports towels I bought years ago have been a god-send for hosteling and camping!

Somebody really should invent the washing machine ASAP!

Even if the case does make it there safely, don't these people get ill from eating meat that's been out of the fridge for many hours? It just sounds so unhygienic and unwise.

Surely it's much easier to just restrict yourself to holidays in your own country, if you can't eat food from anywhere else?

Far too many places think that they're selling a set-dressed lifestyle, rather than a base for people to actually live from. They clearly don't ever stop to think about people's needs, or how they themselves would live there. This must be why self-catering places will have big, dramatic local art on all the walls, yet no decent sharp knife, potato peeler or oven gloves!

Surely nowadays everybody will have at least a phone, other devices and electrical equipment that they will need to plug in. If you're paying more than a month's mortgage money to stay somewhere for a week, you shouldn't have to worry about charging your phone or plugging in your hair straighteners.

I agree. We always take an extension lead that has standard 13A UK sockets and a 16A Schuko plug on the end so we don’t need any adapters.

Why not just take the one from home? Instead of buying a second one?

That is absolutely wacky! 😁 Wouldn’t it be easier just to avert your gaze or go out on the balcony for a few minutes if you have a phobia about seeing people using the toilet?

I have a folding dice tray. It packs completely flat and then when we get to the hotel I pop it up and it becomes a useful tray to keep all of our little bits and pieces that we use a lot (headphones, keys, jewellery, hair ties, lip balm etc) to make sure we don’t forget anything. We usually move between hotels multiple times on our holidays so I like to have a way to keep little things together and organised so that packing up is quick and we don’t forget anything mission critical.

Exactly, we have a gang/multi plug station for this reason, never the right plug sockets in the right place

We usually take laptops with us on holiday, I need to use the hair dryer, various things need charging etc

Dont get me started about ironing boards, the only place to set up an ironing board happens to be no where near somewhere to plug in the iron. Quite remarkable

Oh and we've also stayed in places where you cant even get the plug into the plug socket in the wall because the skirting board is so high up next to the socket that the plug cannot make secure connection. Nicely thought out owner, thanks !!!!
