Lack of jobs. 70% unemployment after AI. 2/3 of people currently calling themselves ‘content creators’. No one has money to buy actual stuff anymore, apart from the basics. Lots of people unemployed, no money, constant scrolling on SM watching ‘content’. All trying to make it as ‘content creators’ as views and engagement is the only income viable. It’s a highly precarious income, constantly trying to out do and ‘max’ ourselves for viewing numbers and subscribers. No one has any real purpose, all children, pets, experiences are used for content. Education becomes devalued, no need for school as childcare anymore, whole families can sit and scroll together. School attendance gets in the way of ‘experiences’ anyway. No one works menial jobs as they are all too anxious, depressed, distracted and of course thats nothing to do with social media, it’s a lack of reasonable adjustments and shouldn’t their employers know that they can’t serve customers in their customer service job as it’s too triggering/ anxiety provoking. All pets have to match furniture. There’s no social care. We all die with our hands in claw like positions with very tired thumbs.

tbf it's not just the government that's killing UK farming - I don't think the majority of the UK population give a toss about farmers, as long as they can get their strawberries from Israel in Asda in December.
Here in France farmers are powerful, respected, and not to be fucked with. French people very much prefer to buy seasonal French produce. As it should be.

Yes, you’re right. I do admire the French and wish we more like them in this regard. They take matters into their own hands when they are not being listened to, we could learn a lot from them.

Thiscantgoonlikethis · 05/08/2026 10:17

@Octavia64i don’t know about farming but it will hit social care and is already. A lot can be replicated with an Alexa such as medication prompts, routine setting, reassurance, company… everything except personal care.

That won't work if the person has limted or no capacity. Do you have experience in the care sector?

To address your earlier point, just because people consider themselves to be content creators, doesn't mean they are making a living at it.

The care industry will be one of the first to go fully automated with AI. No humans required.

Laurmolonlabe · 05/08/2026 20:23

Pretty much all jobs will be in real life- AI will take care of content creation.
Most of the wealth will continue to funnel into the accounts of those who already have the most.Less and less people will be able to afford to have children. Higher education will slowly collapse- partly because of over expansion, partly a fall in standards, combined with an increase in cost, and the disapperance of jobs which need higher education. Once the intelligensia can't make good salaries the look and influence of the upper middle class will shift.
It will be interesting, and a very bumpy ride- our chances of solving our problems seem to be shrinking.

Tunnocks34 · 05/08/2026 20:30

As someone who works in a really deprived northern area, in a secondary school, this isn’t the way I see the world at all.

Teenagers, they are kinder, braver and more sure of themselves than I have seen in the last 10 years of teaching. It used to be kids were ridiculed for being different and now it is so largely accepted. They for the most part have a strong sense of who they are and what direction they want to go in, and are prepared to work hard to get there. Most of our children want to be plumbers, builders, lawyers, criminologists, nurses, doctors, hair dressers. Very rarely do they want to be ‘content creators’.

AI is on the rise, but our children are adapting, children are taught about AI and its impacts in school and are so much more aware of it that we are.

If you think the majority of social care can be replaced by AI, you must have no idea what care workers do on a daily basis!

There is absolutely no way that AI can replace the care and support that is given to someone with complex health needs, learning disabilities, or late stage dementia as basic examples. It's far more than a few reminders I can assure you.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 06/08/2026 18:29

If you create content, you're a content creator. I stream once a week. It's a hobby. I'm technically a content creator. I also have a job, but am looking for one that will give me more hours because I can't afford to live.

JJMama · 06/08/2026 18:29

This is not life as I know it 😂

It sounds exhausting!

LoftyPlumLion · 06/08/2026 18:59

I definitely share your anxiety but unemployment is at 4.8% which overall is low.

It has been climbing since 2022 though. AI definitely is a worry but annoyingly it's a huge productivity boost. Why is it that all these gains are making a small few rich? Why can't the many benefit? The money never trickles down.

Market forces doesn't seem to be pushing prices down. The small few seem to be getting richer but I don't feel like I am.

OP - You might enjoy reading the sci-fi/dystopian short story "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury, written in 1950 but set on April 4th 2026.....

FlorenceBlack · 06/08/2026 19:56

This thread reminds me of series one of The Undeclared War, people in Russia sitting at computers trying to wind up Brits online…

@Thiscantgoonlikethis we are very long way from robots being able to do cleaning, caring, nursing, shelf stacking, plumbing, electrics etc

I do understand what you're saying in a way, but the way you talk about 65% content creation doesn't make any sense.

Basically, you've been really OTT and it makes me wonder what your life is like? And what you think carers are actually doing.

Robotic nursing is the future for health care. They already assist with nursing and caregiving tasks in countries like Japan, the United States, and Taiwan.

Yes, but have you seen what they actually do? It's not much.

editing to add - I realise these technologies coming on in leaps and bounds, but there are 100% care jobs available! OP is talking like there's no jobs.

it's normally me who's posting about the horrors of this kind of thing. I'm not lacking in sympathy. I just did not recognise the picture painted by the OP as being current.

The robots are projected to get significantly more advanced. Driven by rapid breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision, future care robots will transition from simple automated reminders to sophisticated assistive systems capable of physical lifting, subtle health monitoring, and adaptive communication.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/08/2026 20:44

@6ate9 thanks for using AI to tell me a bunch of stuff I already know

I think the timeline for the rollout of lifting robotsis starting in 2030. And the timelines are always very optimistic on these things.

Bear in mind we were supposed to have most of our deliveries done by drones already - actually, I think maybe we were meant to have that by 2015 - and also driverless cars were substantially delayed.

i'm not going to pretend the future isn't bleak! I'm just puzzled by @Thiscantgoonlikethis talking as if that future has already arrived.

They've been projecting that for thirty years, and it's nowhere near any of that.

Tsham · 05/08/2026 10:23

I think your vision is overly dystopian and pessimistic, however, I think we are witness to the beginning of the end of the human race, or Western civilisation at the very least. It’ll see us out, probably, but everything has its time and everything ends; we’ve had a good innings but it’s maybe time for whatever comes next.

Yikes that sent a chill down my spine, it’s the first time I’ve read someone writing what I’ve also been thinking and it’s scary! But also very interesting! What is next for the human race? The planet doesn’t give a sh*t about what’s on it. If we burn it up it’s our own problem!

XenoBitch · 06/08/2026 20:47

smallglassbottle · 05/08/2026 12:12

Try doing that to someone with dementia, fragile skin, pain, cancer, acute anxiety, delerium, a fracture or very low bmi.

Yep, using robots to move people is treating those people as robots.
Vulnerable people needing to be moved need a human touch that no robot will ever deliver. They should not be treated like a pallet being picked up and moved by a forklift truck.

Mingou · 06/08/2026 20:44

So what will happen if the carer shortage keeps getting worse? Who will care for the growing number of people who need it?

Good care needs a human.

I think you are over estimating the abilities of robots and AI. Robots replacing actual carers will never happen in our lifetime. It is proper sci-fi stuff.
Having you been watching 'Anne-Droid' and think we are capable of that level of robotics now?

RemindMeIn15Minutes · 06/08/2026 20:54

“All pets have to match furniture.”

This made me laugh - but there’s a lot of truth in your prediction, OP. Some of the details are wrong I think but, yes, we’re now well on the way to hell (and a lot of people I know think so too).

No, I’ve not watched Ann Droid. Just wondering what will happen in our lifetime!!
