AIBU to think PC Harper's killers being released early is awful?

To think it's awful PC Harper's killers will be let out early.
As if it isn't hard enough for his wife and his family that it happened, now they face all this early release. How cruel. How absolutely cruel can life be?🤢

What a rotten justice system we have.
Petitions are going round, but they shouldn't have to?
What's the betting the offenders will just carry on the same way as before when released anyway?
How can anyone in their right mind think it's acceptable?🤔😮

I’m on the fence with this one. The driver won’t be released early. The passengers might be. There are a lot of victims out there who all want justice and deserve it. PC Harpers family and their anguish is well published but not many people have this. They need their justice too.
It’s a tricky one and I feel for everyone who is a victim of crime and affected by this.
In an ideal world I would have the prison system that they now have in El Salvador. Literally lock em up and throw away the key.

Genuinely, I'm not sure I've ever really heard people argue that some crimes currently labeled as "manslaughter" should be redesignated as "murder".

Do you think there should be any legal difference between intentionally killing someone and unintentional, reckless killing?

I guess we could adopt a US-style degrees or murder. Most US states only have 1st (premeditated) and 2nd (unplanned) murder, but some have 3rd degree which I think would cover recklessness.

Reckless endangerment resulting in death should be murder. Especially when it involves criminals fleeing from a law enforcement officer and killing the officer in the process.

So just collapse murder, voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter into the same offence, full stop?

I'm far from convinced that's a popular point of view among the general public.

Build more prisons. If there's the political will, they can find the money.

Where from? We all know there is no money. We need to spend more on just about everything and it’s all a priority - defence, the justice system, prisons, social care. As we are so often reminded there is no magic money tree, however much political will there might be.

They don’t make the laws we live by. Politicians do. The House of Commons (voted for by you) and the House of Lords. Many of our laws (particularly those relating to crimes committed by humanity since the dawn of time, like killing each other) are centuries old.
Changes in the law caused by specific cases are rare, and that is exactly how it should be. The death of this policeman is an utter tragedy and this crime is a nasty one that should carry the highest sentence our laws allow. BUT this case should not equate to different sentencing simply because he was a policeman and it was on social media. A man was killed in a fairly similar circumstance a road away from me this last year. Would there be similar uproar for his killers?

Sentencing laws were changed as a result of this case.

For the worse, in my view, but there we go.

None of this would be a quick overnight fix, but;

1. Deport foreign nationals serving time back to their country of origin. I say this as an immigrant myself.

2. Dealth penalty for murderers will make space. Controversial? Yes. The topic makes people uncomfortable, however I think there’s too much emphasis on the important of human rights (for criminals of serious violent crime) in this country. How do we preach that the death penalty is barbaric, and that life must be preserved above all else, when we slaughter countless cattle everyday? I am not vegetarian, far from it. I eat meat everyday. I just find it almost hypocritical that so many have a moral objection towards the death penalty for murders when we still choose to put down animals purely for the sake of enjoyment of food. This all comes down to the traditional view that human needs and lives hold superior significance above all else. I do not disagree with this, however this has lead many to believe that all humans hold equal inherent value. We do not. Does anybody honestly believe gang members who stab rivals to death for credibility and brownie points from their peers hold the same value as a law abiding citizen? Society is turning more sinister and violent as the years go on, the justice system needs to become more cut-throat to reflect this.

@NevsThese suggestions cannot happen. We cannot make countries accept immigrants who are criminals. Neither is the death penalty coming back - ever. Plus, do you understand the difference between manslaughter and murder? It seems few people do. We cannot contemplate the death penalty for manslaughter.

The government may now be moving towards changing the release scheme to not allow manslaughter convictions of public servants to be considered. So there’s a greater value placed on their lives than the death of a child by manslaughter. This whole policy and its implications has not been thought through and it’s a Burnham cock up.

I do indeed, don’t be condescending. Why are you bringing manslaughter into my argument? I did not mention any instances of manslaughter cases (not even the case relating to PC Harper). I made it very clear I was referring to intentional violent murder.

These little shits know exactly how to play the system, we’ve a local dirt bad around here, caught for the second time with a lot of drugs, 1000’s in cash. I was reading up on his court appearance, the BS they came out with, bad upbringing, under threat, he got a soft sentence, he’ll be back to terrorise the community soon enough. Had they check his wardrobe/ girlfriend’s wardrobe, checked holiday bookings they would see that he is actually the one who makes threats.

One look at the smirking faces of the pair of scumbags in prison, tells me they are banking on getting out soon.

How about releasing some of those who are still on IPP sentences. Some have served years for what some deem as relatively minor offences. But that would probably be the sensible option wouldnt it, and this government dont seem to have much concept of sense

I do agree it's awful, 100% but...right now there are women who are absolutely terrified because the perpetrators of DV against them are going to be let out early. These men will have committed very serious offences against their ex partners because they never would have been sent to prison otherwise. It takes a lot to be sent to prison right now. Most DV perps just get community sentences. So these men are very dangerous and the risk to their ex partners is very high.

I have every sympathy for the family of PC Harper. They absolutely do deserve to have justice and shouldn't have to be going through what they are. But there are also many more cases where known victims are at risk. They just aren't high profile like this case is.
