AIBU to complain to the landlord about noisy neighbours at night?

A new couple moved in next door last month and they are so utterly loud every night it's ridiculous. It's almost 4am and the man is standing in the garden making an extremely loud video call. The day before it sounded like they were having a party. They're so loud through the night that even with a fan running and an audiobook playing on my headband I still can't sleep. They also have loads of family or friends over who all also make a lot of noise. Even talking to each other is done at high volume!

My husband went down to speak to him but said the man had no or very little English so couldn't understand him. The neighbor on the other side tried speaking to the woman with a similar result.

Wibu to complain to the landlord about them? It's starting to affect my performance at work and my manager brought it up yesterday because I almost made a stupid and dangerous mistake. 😬

As soon as you said video call at 4am, I guessed that they were from another country. Their body clock is still on the time zone of their country. Video calls can be insanely loud, much louder than phone calls so I sympathise with you.

Definitely complain to their landlord. Your new neighbours are oblivious to the disturbance they are making. They may not be fully aware how noisy they are being.

I would have thought it was to council the LL does have anyway of controlling what’s going on Nextdoor. Unless he’s there LL as well

Yea, complain. That sort of noise should stop by 11pm week nights and midnight on weekends.

I'd persist with asking them to be quiet. "Keep the noise down" is pretty easy in sign language.

“Oy, shhhhhhh” is universal language. Use it out the window at stupid times.
we had noisy neighbours in a rented flat. Buy the land registry deeds that may tell you the owners address. If not then did you see a board of the agent who rented it? If not try googling the address and ‘to let’. We emailed the agents of the new neighbours and it stopped within 12 hours.
If desperate I could have tried our landlord but they wouldn’t have had any more info than we had. If you are in flats with a management company that could be an option.

What do you think the landlord is going to do? It's not a good enough reason to evict and in any case, do you think the landlord is going to want to pay to take them to court if they refuse to move.

It's the council you need to contact. In reality, you've just fallen into bad luck because annoying neighbours tend to rule the neighborhood and make life hell for everyone else without a care. Best you can do is leave a as non confrontational note and hope they actually care. They probably don't.

We’ve had problems with ‘annoying’ neighbours and anti-social [so say] family members visiting the house daily. They are also very noisy after 11pm and she has visitors start appearing from 630am. They are private renters. We’ve had police involvement and made two official complaints to the landlord. His response was she is polite to him, keeps the house tidy and why don’t we just turn off cctv so we can’t see them using our driveway and denting our cars!! That said after the last complaint where we asked to meet him face to face, although dismissive to us at that time and it felt like an utter waste of breath, there was a definite change in her behaviour afterwards. Less so by some of her family but honestly ‘entitlement’ doesn’t fall far from the tree……speak to the landlord.

Oh god. I loathe these types. The entitlement of video calling outdoors at all hours. Shouting instead of talking. Bloody loathe them.

Good suggestions. You are a lot kinder than me suggesting cultural differences to explain their behaviour. Sounds to me like they are inconsiderate arses in any language, religion or creed and they should STFU at night irrespective of their background.

The landlord is running a business and the prospect of losing good tenants might concern him. So yes complain, but keep in mind he is not responsible for next door’s behaviour and has no enforcement powers other than a ‘robust’ approach to neighbour.

It’s almost certain that the tenancy agreement will have a clause in there about noise that the LL could enforce

There will be clauses preventing the OP from making noise but nothing obligating the landlord to deal with noise nuisance from the neighbour.

Now you mention it, another route might be to find out who neighbours’ landlord is and see if they’re prepared to take action.

Sorry yes that’s what I meant. My previous post makes it clear that the neighbours landlord should be contacted. OP LL will have little no no power or influence unless there’s a management company.
