Cost for help in garden

I’ve seen on my local FB group someone paying £8ph for a young person to help tidy their garden.

i think that’s far too little but someone was recommended and he’s £70 full day. He’s a labourer on site, no transport.

is that not a bit too little?

Definitely too little.

It’a the same on my Nextdoor. People asking the vulnerable to work for very low wages and framing it as ‘pocket money’.

Mums are responding saying their boys will help…. It’s kinda weird.

Yes far too little. To put into context I recently paid £160 for a full garden tidy, it was weeding patio & surrounding area, cutting hedge and mowing small lawn. About 2.5hrs work for two young men (late teens/early 20s).

is that with waste removal?

I guess someone else could take 4 hours.

No waste removal, they used our garden bin. But they did bring their own equipment.

I think £8ph is exploitative tbh, even for a teen just earning pocket money. £70 for a full day is also too little, say 7hr day, that's well below nmw.

£8/hour is low, but gov.uk says it’s national minimum wage for under 18s.

It's really low, but also not good value - assuming an under 18 doesn't have professional equipment or training. Our gardener can achieve more in a 2hr visit than I can do in a weekend with hand tools.

thats the problem with society everyone wants a proper wage but no one wants to pay the proper prices for the person to have the proper wage,

For an untrained teen eg a 15 year old trying to make money for a big school trip who needs to use all of your equipment and garden waste bin it’s an acceptable price and legal. For over 19 it’s not even legal to pay so low.

I’ve got a lad from round the corner who comes and cleans my car (using my water, my cleaning chemicals, my electric, my hoover) and I’m doing him a favour really because I’d do it myself otherwise but he’s doing an expedition and needs to raise money.

It depends on the age I think. We need more jobs for teens. I don’t need a gardener, and I don’t want to pay the prices suggested here I’d rather do it myself. But if some local teenagers were advertising their services and it was say £10 an hour I’d pay them to do it. It’s give them experience and some money, we need more of this.

Same on my local Next Door site. They take the piss with cleaners as well.

It rather depends if this is on the black market or if all tax is being declared.

Why does it? If I had an elaborate garden that required a professional gardener I’d go with one, but lots of people just have regular smallish gardens and don’t need or want to pay high prices. Why would it bother you if teenagers want to get some experience and make some money and people are wanting to pay what they ask for some small jobs?

If it's for a teen in education they won't tax or NI threshold. I pay my uni son to.be ds PA. It's all through payroll at £15 ph but he never gets near the 11k for either tax or NI.

I'd never pay a babysitter via payroll or expect them to do a tax return either

I think minimum wage for a young teenage lad. £70/day is so cheap for an adult. I’d expect for a labourer with no expertise at least £100/day. I paid my gardener (qualified with certificates) £35/hour.
