Double ear piercing at age 11

My daughter is about to start secondary school and had her transition days this week.

One of the girls in her new class has double ear piercings, and, irrationally, it rubbed me the wrong way. I can't even quite explain why! My brain seems to file it somewhere closer to a tattoo than a standard ear piercing, even though I know that's not really logical.

My daughter had her ears pierced earlier this year after I finally surrendered, and I have double piercings myself. So it's not as though I have particularly puritanical views.

And of course, my daughter has now spotted this girl and immediately launched the campaign for a second piercing before September. I fear the siege may be a long one, and history suggests the defenders rarely win.

AIBU to think that a double ear piercing is a bit too much at age 11? Or am I actually a latent pearl clutcher?

Why is it any different to having one?

FWIW my parents were massively anti-piercing - I now have over 20 in my ears, many of which I did myself

My youngest dd had first end of y6, second end of y7, bellybutton in 14th birthday, 3rd end of y9 end of y10 has just had helix. Older dd had septum end of y10 and managed a whole year of school without anyone noticing. Don’t trust youngest to manage that though!

they are only meant to wear one pair so she is regularly getting them removed and taken by the teacher. I only ever buy her cheapy Primark multipacks.

The school will make her take the second earrings out.

I think if the first lobe piercing is relatively recent it's worth checking with a piercer if they're healed enough to enable a second set. Can they be left without jewellery while there's jewellery in the second pair?

Do the school allow clear / plain retainers if not a second set of earrings?

I think your best bet is to say it's already August so too late to allow for the initial jewellery to be in place for six weeks before term starts but if she still wants it next summer you can go as soon as they've had their last PE lesson next summer.

If you want to hear something real scary.. I had my belly done at 12 as did a lot of girls on my estate. Would I let my kids do it? Probably not - but it’s two holes in her ear that will not impact your life, or the girls life at all.

I think more than one piercing per ear looks gross. Don’t let her ruin her ears at such a young age - she should be 18 before she can make the choice and by that time hopefully she’ll have grown out of it.

My 13 year old has two ear piercings and wants her thirds soon. I don’t see the issue. Yes school don’t allow it but only one teacher has mentioned it and that was the pastoral when she asked for plasters for pe and she said ‘well I have two so can’t say anything’.

Just because that’s your view doesn’t mean it’s right. It’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. I have both ears twice and my nose pierced

My daughter is 11 and has double ear piercings. She had the second done late last year or early this year i cant remember 🤷‍♀️
My rule with ear piercing is when they are old enough to ask then we will do it. With it being explained if they do not allow me to clean them during the healing process they will be out and wont be done again until she can pay for it herself 🤣🤣. She was 5 or 6 for the first ones.
When she asked for the second ones I was like alright 🤷‍♀️. I also have mine double pierced and as she looked after the first ones during the healing process when she was younger I didnt see the harm personally...... sorry of its my daughter your daughter saw at transition day 🤣🤣.

It's a tiny hole in her ear that she will probably get bored with soon in any case.

With all the battles you potentially have ahead of you I would let this one go.

Yes, a second lobe piercing is a gateway to hardcore tattoo addiction. This is a well known fact.

Everyone on this thread is being terribly cool and laidback. I agree with you @daisyfallout, I would find it weird and too grown up, but without very solid logic to back up my position. Basically I don’t think 11 year olds should look like little adults.

An 11 year old in my child’s class has just got her nose pierced. I’m surprised a reputable piercer would do facial piercings that young! 🤷🏼‍♀️ The secondary school they’re going to surprisingly allows multiple lobe piercings and a nose stud (no rings). When I was at secondary school it was one set of earrings and that was that! I did get my seconds in year 7 though so not against it.

It's funny what people get bothered about. My DD had her ears doubles and belly button pierced by 12. I have a lot of stretch marks and likely she will once she's had kids so I didn't want to deny her that experience. She was very good about cleanliness though or my answer would have been different

I had my seconds done age 10 or 11, so about 1988 or 89, my parents had it done at the same time as me 🤣

My dd had her second hole done in the summer of year 8 so 13.
She has had a third hole put in last week she’s going into year 11 in September.
She plays netball so can only get them done in the summer. At school they can only have one earring in so she will just have the most recent one with an earring in for school.
She wants her belly button done but that’s a flat no.

My 13 year old has just had doubles done. They look lovely. She will take them out for school.

4 teen dds here. First piercing in y6 (y5 for the last two. Second piercings end of y9, third and y10 and then they went for helix/nose/ 4th etc end of gcse. I wouldn’t like a double peircing before y9, but I guess your preference ties into it. Not a fan of earrings on younger girls (had mine down age 6 and have had many piercings settling on three at 55.) my long abandoned helix peircings actually cause me a lot of discomfort now days though long closed up. It’s somewhat of an addiction for my 19yo.

school allows one piercing and I allowed it only during summer as I wasn’t paying for it and then school making them take it out. I had my thirds redone a couple of years ago and we all got a piercing. It was an expensive day!

My step daughter has just had her seconds done for the school holidays, she’s the same age 11! I don’t really see it as a huge issue, it’s just a second earring hole.
she’s also had her hair done pink ( again not really an issue it will come out)

My only concern would be that it’s a waste if they close up because they have to come out for school, because that’s where they spend most of their time. I wouldn’t have any other objection though.

M’y 11 year old had her second piercing yesterday. Three of her friends have also had their second piercings in this holiday so far so it must be a trend. She can only wear 1 pair at school which will be the second piercing for a while. She’s also got pink streaks in her hair. - alongside 5 of her friends. Shes delighted with her ‘look’.

My daughters go to a fairly strict, academically selective all girls school and loads of the girls have double ear piercings. They’re allowed as long as they’re entirely removed for PE/games.
My eldest (13) doesn’t have hers pierced at all; she’s never wanted to. My 11 year old has hers pierced but does so much sport that she rarely bothers wearing them. I couldn’t get worked up about anyone having them pierced twice.
I hate seeing babies with pierced ears though, despite growing up in Spain myself where it’s very common.

Why would 2 earrings in one ear rather than 1 make them look like ‘little adults’?
Honestly I’m generally considered to be a strict and uptight parent but I can’t see the issue with 2 earrings instead of 1!
