AIBU to ask next door not to smoke cannabis in the garden?

AIBU to want next door to stop smoking in the garden?? We have an 8 month old baby and our shared bedroom constantly has marijuana smoke wafting in. It's too hot to sleep with the window closed. Any time of the day or night you can hear neighbour coughing and smell the marijuana smoke whether it's 3am or 3pm. We can't go out in the garden with our baby because the smell is strong and we'd rather not expose him to it even more.

Really frustratingly, we've woken up constantly to the room smelling like marijuana. The neighbour has 2 small children probably around 5 and 6 or so, so I dont think he smokes indoors. Not sure what to do as we don't know the landlords phone number. Also don't think the neighbour speaks English very well. Sad our baby is continuously exposed to this on the daily and not sure what to do 😭😭

Contact the police

JimBobsWife · 31/07/2026 21:27

It's illegal but the police won't care. It's also anti-social behaviour. Make complaints on both fronts and keep making complaints until you become a nuisance to both the police and the council. I'd also call social services and report child neglect if there are children in the house.

What does them speaking English have to do with it?

People smoke. It stinks. There’s really nothing you can do.

At least weed smell better than cigarettes. It could be a lot worse.

Pedaling · 31/07/2026 21:32

I did a double take for a moment wondering if I had made the thread. We also have a neighbour who smokes in his garden (ironically similarly to yours so his kids don't have to breathe it in).

I've had a word a few times since they moved in but it's made no difference and I doubt the police would care. We did speak to the landlord but he wasn't interested either.

Sorry you're also in the same situation, wish I had some helpful advice rather than just a sympathetic ear.

emuloc · 31/07/2026 21:32

My neighbour does the same thing, and his English is spot on, though that has nothing whatsoever to do with anything. I would not dream of asking him to stop, even though it gets right on my nerves, the smell always wafting over the fence, and yes getting into my bedroom.

How to announce your neighbour is a 'Foreigner' without saying he's a Foreigner.
However, YANBU and the worst of my own issues with this is that my washing stinks of skunk if the breeze blows accordingly (not next door either )

Get him told OP.

It really doesn't. Our old neighbours smoked 20+ a day and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as the smell of weed. It also didn't linger for as long.

I think OP meant that she fears there will be a language barrier if she tries to brooch the subject with the neighbour.

Don't complain to the nieghbour face to face, to prevent them from harassing you, remember they are weed smokers they are not transmitting on the same frequencies as others do and although your reasons are more than legitimate and geuine, after all you are right to be concerned about the wellbeing of you baby, your idiot nieghbour is addicted and could retailiate so fgs be careful.

Contact your landlord or council, launch a complaint, tell them in detail the inconvenience this nieghbour is causing and see what the council can do.

Please note, they have to keep your details anonymous, so the useless nieghbour will not know who placed the complaint.

I hope things improve for you and your family OP.

Weed absolutely stinks. I think it’s worse that ciggies as it seems to last longer. I can’t stand the smell as it smell like vomit. People who continually smoke it in their gardens in built up areas are selfish.

OP, how about stink bombs or a good food composter bin right next to the fence.

Not really, I'm American so technically a "foreigner" myself if we want to get geographical. I just mean that they don't speak English so I can't exactly launch a useful discussion by knocking on their door lol.

Since they don't speak English I can't exactly knock on their door and mention anything useful. Also, you do know second-hand smoke exists right? A baby having to breathe it in daily isn't the best thing, nevermind the smell. 🙄

Realistically you are not going to stop this neighbours activity in their own home/garden. You could look into action via the landlord if it is social housing.
so you need to consider what you can do to improve the environment in your own home. Can you install a localised air con unit in your bedroom to provide cool air without the smell?

KayFabe · 06/08/2026 10:50

You could suggest he uses a dry herb vape. I use one myself, and my neighbours are none the wiser because there's no smell. Joints are very wasteful anyway, and it isn't fair to foist the smell on others.

I’m guessing you drive an electric car, have no roads or industry anywhere near your house and don’t breathe the same polluted air everyone else is breathing in all the time? Your children are hardly going to get stoned because someone smokes weed in their garden.

Poppingby · 06/08/2026 10:59

Where in the garden do they smoke it? Is there a seat or something they use you can ask them to move by miming and pointing at the baby and the window? I'm imagining a flat in a terraced house and they are smoking on the side you're on is that right?

BauhausOfEliott · 06/08/2026 11:10

I think it's unlikely that you're going to stop him smoking in his own garden, whether it's weed or cigarettes.

If you think it's really excessive and a massive nuisance, you could try talking to the antisocial behaviour unit at your local authority for advice.

Clemdfandango · 06/08/2026 11:15

We had the exact same problem with next door's daughter. We asked her 3 times to please not smoke it on the patio as it was right under our bedroom window.

She'd comply for a while and either go to the end of the garden or the shed but then go back to her old ways and it wasn't just weed, it was the awful strong stuff that actually gave me a headache.

In the end, I spoke to her dad and he said to leave it with him.

It is illegal to smoke it in your own home but that's not what bothered me, it's the disgusting, pungent smell, which permeates the whole house so I sympathise with the OP, although not sure what she can do about it.

Agree. In recent years, I’ve discovered how much I actually like the smell of cigarettes compared to weed.
