I quite frequently buy stuff from a well known public auction company. They deal in returned goods, items taken by bailiffs, items not collected from postal lockers etc. All legitimate and above board.

I routinely buy stuff that I want and if it comes as a job lot, I sell on. I declare my earnings etc.

I recently purchased a number of items - women's clothes and some kitchen gadgets. The kitchen gadgets were generic (think Amazon/ temu type stuff). Pack of 8. Arrived all sealed in cellophane. Opened up 1 and found cigarettes. 50 packs of them. Sealed in those pack of 10s, say UK duty paid on them etc.

I opened all the other packs as well - out of 8, 2 were what they said on the box. The rest were cigs!

I've never had this happen before! I don't know what I should do.

Well I don't think you should sell them as, despite saying UK duty paid, I'd be very suspicious that they're not above board. I would contact someone, maybe trading standards, for advice.

Ca you tell me what Auction House I can buy from - it sounds exciting!!

Likeiloveyou · 31/07/2026 17:21

I would just give to a smoker.

BMW58 · 31/07/2026 17:22

Police.

glassof · 31/07/2026 17:24

I didn't think you could buy packs of 10 anymore so I would be handing them in, could have anything in them

I don't know anyone!

A couple of friends vape but that's it.

It's 10 packs of 20 per sealed unit.

Oh ok, sorry I misread. I'd still hand them in. Could be fakes.

Backedoffhackedoff · 31/07/2026 17:44

How much did you pay for them? Is it like a blind auction where you take the risk the stuff in there won’t be what you expect?

id give them away, but if you can get a refund I’d try that.

I wouldn’t know how to make money out of them, but I wouldn’t waste my time handing them in or contacting the police tbh.

Yeah - all sales are final, even if the stuff isn't what you expect.

Sometimes electronics don't work or there's a scratch in the item etc. often they're perfect though.

I knew I was bidding on utensils but they may have been factory seconds or shitty quality. I only paid £22 inc delivery. But I'd like my money back!

Simon Charles by any chance ,? I have bought stuff from them some good some broke some down right peculiar.

If it is SC there is bugger all they will do , it's always very clear that it's not been checked by the auction house.

I think I'd give the local police a call or take them to your local pub and give them away .

parallhel · 31/07/2026 18:17

Give them to a homeless person on the streets, s/he can sell them on and make some money. Or use them themselves. Police won't care, it's a Customs and Excise issue, but forget that.

I quite like that idea

No, but very similar and yeah I don't expect they'll care.

And even if they’re not false… handing out fags to homeless people?? I mean, it’s a crap idea on every level!

And if they’re homeless and a smoker, considering the cost of cigarettes, then then is a little odd

QuirkyOpal · 31/07/2026 20:22

Start a new habit? Only joking!

Lexy2345 · 31/07/2026 20:25

Are the cigarettes branded? I’d offer them to a low income smoker if I knew any. I wouldn’t sell them on.
