So, situation.

My father died in April, i'm the executor, only child of an only child. It's all on me.

Over the last few years, Dad had experienced a few issues with plumbing, fixed as soon as noticed. (Leaking cistern of a toilet, water tank in roof overflowing excessively, leaking pipe in kitchen.) There was a leaking toilet cistern, AGAIN, noticed during our recent efforts to refurb the property.

I received a bill for water after a meter check of £3,500 for his estate.

From the leaks, this is not impossible. But, wow.

For the sake of my mental health from everything, tempted to just pass it on to the solicitor to deal with it. But, for the sake of safeguarding Dad's resources. This seems nuts.

Am I alone in this? Or, do we think the utilities firms are pulling a fast one?

His last care bill raised a few eyebrows too (Charging for hours when Dad was in hospital) but, again, i'm emotionally spent.... Hope that's not being preyed on.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Have you notified the water company of your fathers passing? Many will close an account and leave the property "vacant" on their systems if there are no full time occupiers during probate. If not, they can offer leak allowances. I'd recommend giving them a call -- there's likely something they can do to help you.

The bill was explicitly detailed to my Dad's executor. We did notify them.

I'd understand completely if you'd rather not say, but I am curious which water company it is. I've worked for 8 across the UK and it was not standard policy for any of them to continue billing an executor for usage after the account holder has passed away. I'm disgusted on your behalf that this is how they're treating you. I'm so sorry they're making such a hard time even more difficult for you.

I would speak to them again making sure you speak to the bereavement team

mu mother died recently I contacted the water company who said they would move the account immediately to no charge until we sell the house, but they will contact us in 6 months or so to see whats happening

I would also challenge the cost and advise you have had a leak, again my water company in the past made an allowance for me when I said mine was higher than normal and I had had a leak
