To think cotton bedding is overrated?

I’ve bought two new pure cotton bed sets recently, being under the impression that it’s meant to be cooler.

But it isnt, particularly.

Also it’s so scratchy! Both sets have been washed but even the fabric conditioner hasn’t made a difference.

I bought a set from Tesco a while back and it’s beautifully soft and smooth - not sure if it’s poly cotton or some other mix but it’s far nicer than the cotton ones.

What am I missing about cotton?

I’ve never experiencing scratchy cotton bed linen. Where did you get it from? I’m enjoying cotton muslin at the moment, which is so soft.

Whats the thread count? Lower thread count cotton is stiff. I prefer linen myself for coolness

I really like the M&S comfortably cool range, that’s very smooth and silky

I like proper linen (rather than cotton).

I have also experienced the scratchiness - microfibre bedding seems to be the worst culprit

Some cotton is awful. Beware if they are on the cheaper side.

It’s to do with the length of the threads. The longer the threads the silkier the cotton.

You get what you pay for. I used to buy the cheapest but then bought some with a 600 thread count and it’s a far superior product

I only buy White Company, primarily for the deep pocket fitted sheets but they are also beautifully soft.

Was it cheap? I use Egyptian cotton with a 1000 thread count, expensive but lasts for ever, it’s cool, crisp and lovely to sleep in.

The White Company is lovely. Dusk is also good (and much cheaper!). I also have a couple of guest sets by H&M that I was worried about initially but after multiple washes they are now lovely and soft

Noooo its the best thing ever...the scratcher and stiffer the better especially if its bern dried outside on a windy day ...its a bastard to iron but cool and crispy is the is the way to go with non of that super soft or easy iron crap.

I was having horrendous night sweats, on new meds, no sleep…Turns out it was my poly cotton bedding! Switched to pure cotton and sweating no more! A bit gutted, as I loved my old bedding, but the relief at not having to change multiple times a night, sleep on a towel, endless washing etc really outweighs that!

Microfibre and poly cotton are like trying to sleep in a plastic bag. But ive got cheap cotton duvet covers(currently an old one from Morrisons) and they're lovely, smooth and soft. I've got an expensive(for me) 100% cotton one and its horrible, tiny pills make it scratchy. Im tempted by muslin ones.

Highly recommend 100% linen bedding. Pricey but absolutely gorgeous 🥰

It's all about the thread count. If you want a luxury feel, you need at least 400 thread count. Less than that can feel 'bobbly'.

Additionally, you can get 'sateen' or 'percale' linen. Percale is fresh and crisp and better for hot weather, whereas sateen is smoother and shinier, and better for winter.

Basically, if you want cool and crisp, go for cotton percale with a thread count of 400 or greater.

Avoid fabric softener. It builds up, hold odour, and ruins fabric. (And it's bad for the environment and, likely us/endocrine system).

Wash, add vinegar to the rinse and dry. Over time it will soften. But, like others have said, higher thread count. If pre-shrunk you can put in the dryer.

Absolutely not, I cannot stand the poly cotton bedding as it is uncomfortable (to me) in feel, not as soft, and is so unbelievably sweaty whenever it gets even a bit hot because it isn’t breathable at all. 100% cotton all the way (nothing fancy trust me but definitely 100% cotton!)

Well it was cheap. Maybe I’ll ask for some nicer stuff for Christmas.

I voted Yanbu - I disagree with you but if you don’t value cotton sheets don’t buy them. If you don’t value champagne or good wine buy the cheap stuff - I don’t value expensive white wine - I don’t buy it. Surely you know you’re own mind?

I bought 200 thread count sheets (not exactly kim kardashian level luxury) and hated it!

Too smooth!

Nothing beats getting into bed with brand new cotton bedding. But just 100% cotton. Or even cotton rich. Nice and scratchy 😄🙈

Soak and Sleep linen for me now, no going back to floppy old cotton.

Ikea being is surprisingly good, especially because it's not very high thread count. It is quite weighty though, which is what i like about it
