AIBU to think Richard killed Mary rather than the sheriff?

Watched this video for the first time in forever and I always thought it was the sheriff that killed Mary but now I am thinking Richard did it in a jealous rage after seeing Mary with her boyfriend.

I think the town blaming him for his mother’s death was a bit mean. When you have candles that close to a window is not going to end well. Also how did they not smell smoke and get the hell out.

The song hazard by Richard Marx’s the video is a murder mystery and there are chapter one and chapter two that have different scenes in. It’s left to the people watching to decide. Marx have never said who it was

YABU for not explaining the context.

Sweetpea333 · 29/07/2026 20:46

It was the sheriff. It's quite obvious by the lyrics alone! The video couldn't make it clearer.

AnotherExpatKiwi · 29/07/2026 20:48

I confess. I shot the sheriff but I did not shoot the deputy.

No idea about Richard and Mary.

GinToBegin · 29/07/2026 20:48

Richard is an unreliable narrator. He did it, whatever it was.

Seaglasscat · 29/07/2026 20:51

Sorry it is the song Hazard by Richard Marx. The video involves a murder or suicide but it’s not solved. Google it it’s has people wondering for decades

That boy's not right

Seaglasscat · 29/07/2026 20:56

def not right but I am not sure anyone in that video was “right” to be honest

I think it was just some local lowlife. And the sheriff had a likely suspect. At least that's how I took it.

This. I still have no idea tbh but at least I know it's not for me.

That boy's not right

That was "prejudiced eyes" that made them say that. Mary was the only one to challenge the prejudice and know he was good. So he was not the killer.

Hazard by Richard Marx

My mother came to Hazard when I was just seven
Even then the folks in town said with prejudiced eyes, "That boy's not right"
Three years ago when I came to know Mary
First time that someone looked beyond the rumors and the lies
And saw the man inside

We used to walk down by the river
She loved to watch the sun go down
We used to walk along the river
And dream our way out of this town

No one understood what I felt for Mary
No one cared until the night she went out walking all alone
And never came home
Man with a badge came knocking next morning
Here was I surrounded by a thousand fingers suddenly
Pointed right at me

I swear I left her by the river
I swear I left her safe and sound
I need to make it to the river
And leave this old Nebraska town

I think about my life gone by
How it's done me wrong
There's no escape for me this time
All of my rescues are gone, long gone

I swear I left her by the river
I swear I left her safe and sound
Oh, I need to make it to the river
And leave this old Nebraska town

It’s ambiguous. He’s an odd character, but Mary understood him. They were friends. Either he attacked her or someone else did and pinned it on him because he was known for being her friend and was odd. Personally I think it wasn’t him.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 29/07/2026 22:45

I don’t think it was him. He’s just an obvious scapegoat. Most haunting song ever though, under rated.

DallasMajor · 29/07/2026 22:46

I knew what you were talking about by the title, I always thought he was innocent, but I will rewatch the video tomorrow.

YABU for not explaining the context.

I knew exactly what op was mulling over from the title. Maybe this is a thread aimed at MNers of a certain vintage.

XigDoop · 29/07/2026 23:10

Richard is innocent. Mary swam off to find her true love Jaques Costeau.

cariadlet · 29/07/2026 23:15

Never heard of the song but why would a young man leave his girlfriend alone by a river? The pp make it soundas though he left her alone, somewhere fairly isolated, in the evening/night.

That doesn't sound very caring or responsible.

CuppaWhiteTea · 29/07/2026 23:18

I never thought he did it either. I’ve never seen the video though so the fact the sheriff is a suspect is a revelation to me. That’s blown this cold case wide open!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/07/2026 23:21

I think it was him and always have. As pp said he’s an unreliable narrator.

Livinginthenewcentury · 29/07/2026 23:33

It's a great video. I think he might have done it and is trying to make it to the river to drown himself and be with Mary.

Good for you. For those of who aren't, some context might have been useful, or aiming the title at those who might understand it.

EmeraldRoulette · 29/07/2026 23:50

He did a fantastic job with this

I agree that he is an unreliable narrator

But I also don't think he did it

How many years later and we're still talking about it? Great work.

Adults don't need to be spoon fed everything.

If you didn't know you could just click out.

'Spoon fed everything' when the context is 'Watched this video' 🙄
