Would you find this behaviour rude from a friend at a birthday?

If it were your birthday and you asked your friend if she wanted a drink (she didn't offer you one) she was drunk and said 'a beer', no please or thank you. You go over to take the beer to her, she turns around quickly and accidentally knocks it over you and doesn't apologise.

She is very drunk and ends up vomiting outside and sitting on the pavement. Another friend helps her up and a third friend also gets involved.
The next day on the whatsapp group she sends out a message "Thank you so much everyone for looking after me last night!" With 0 acknowledgment of you or the fact that it was your birthday.
Just found it rude and selfish.

I'd think she had a drinking problem - I don't mean that nastily, I used to have one myself.

Fortnightly · 29/07/2026 19:05

She’s just busy cringing 😬 at her behaviour. Also, what was she supposed to say, ‘hope I didn’t ruin your birthday?’. She really doesn’t want to hear that she did, so best avoid mentioning your birthday.

Projecting!

Projecting!

Not really. Drinking till you puke is problem drinking.

AllTheChicken · 29/07/2026 19:07

'Glad you got home ok and you don't feel too bad this morning! Thank you all for coming out for my birthday, I'm glad most of us had a good time.'

It depends whether you're willing to let the friendship go by making a point about her lack of celebrating your bday or not.

NotOnYourEllie · 29/07/2026 19:07

Really rude. How old are you all? It is so rude to turn up drunk to someone else's birthday drinks.

The drunkeness explains the rudeness, but there was no need for her to show up drunk at all. So yanbu

havingoneofthosedays · 29/07/2026 19:09

I couldn’t get worked up about this, but I like my friends

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 29/07/2026 19:09

She was a bit rude because she was drunk it sounds like. Not sure what acknowledgment you were looking for on the WhatsApp group the next day though. Did she wish you a happy birthday at all?

Imanautumn · 29/07/2026 19:12

Your mate got drink and acted like an arse it’s not a big deal

Waveybaby1 · 29/07/2026 19:13

Jesus drunk people are drunk if its a one off let it go its not all about you. Birthday or not

Gladitsraining · 29/07/2026 19:33

Sounds like she made your birthday celebration all about her. She doesn't sound like much of a friend.

And she sounds as though she has a drinking problem if she drinks so much she vomits and sits around on the pavement.

Perhaps you should concentrate on your other friends OP: ones who actually care about you.

NaiceCupOTea · 29/07/2026 19:42

I'd be annoyed but if it was a one off I'd let it go. I had a friend who had a problem and would often get blind drunk and need someone to look after them at all social events- including my wedding.

She's not a friend any more.

Cooshawn · 29/07/2026 19:45

I think yes it was rude but it doesn't sound like it was intended. She had too much to drink and behaved like a tit. People have done worse and I wouldn't be getting carried away stewing on it if I were you.

Springsummertime · 29/07/2026 19:45

She had too much to drink! It was your birthday not your wedding! I’d check in with her to check she was ok!!!

MandemChickenShop · 29/07/2026 19:46

main character energy or what!

Username19893847477374 · 29/07/2026 19:57

Yeah, I'd not be bothered if unusual, it happens! She probably feels horrendous today

dairydebris · 29/07/2026 19:58

I wouldn't offer a really drunk friend another drink tbh. I'd insist they have water.

I don't think this needs to be about you really?

NuffSaidSam · 29/07/2026 19:59

It's not ideal obviously, but if she's otherwise a good friend I couldn't get too het up about this. She was drunk and acted like a bit of a tit....I think the vast majority of people have been there tbh!

Dumbledora8 · 29/07/2026 20:06

I'm not uptight so no I really wouldn't care. She was drunk and you offered her another drink- weird

Disturbia81 · 29/07/2026 20:09

People do things out of character when drunk

OP never said she turned up drunk, she said she was drunk there.

OP just move on. The first part (no please / thank you) was because she was drunk. The puking (my god how many times have i done that before) I know it was your birthday and it sucks that she made a bit of a tit out of herself but I’m sure her knowing that is punishment enough. If this was my mate I’d laugh it off - it feels like you’re pissed she somehow diverted the attention away from you.

I took this to mean that this was the first interaction op had with her friend that evening. But you're right - op never said that for sure. Maybe they were all there getting trashed for an hour before op offered her a drink.

Getting so drunk you puke on the pavement at someone else's birthday is arguably as rude as turning up drunk, but allowances would be made if she was like 20 yo.

Pistachiocake · 29/07/2026 20:22

I'd be seriously worried if someone got that drunk (obviously different if you're a teenager) and whether they needed support/were getting in dangerous situations. Maybe that's just because of some of the people I've known, though.

Pippa12 · 29/07/2026 20:24

Crikey! She got pissed and made a tit of herself, unless this a regular occurrence give the girl a break! She’s probably testing the waters because she can’t remember what she did. We’ve all done this in my group of friends in our 30 years of friendship.

Unless your inviting friends for a J20 party there always the risk of somebody having 1 over the 7.

MyThreeWords · 29/07/2026 20:27

She was drunk; she behaved badly; she doesn't remember the details. Not sure how you get to make it all about you and your birthday.
