Could anxiety or missed beta blockers cause mid-cycle bleeding?

ill start this by saying I’m worried - this has shot my anxiety through the roof.

history I’ve been suffering with dizziness since October last year, and was diagnosed with labyrinthitis twice since then. It’s lingered on and off resulting in me being diagnosed with anxiety surrounding the attacks happening in public. Kind of a catch 24 with it.

I was put on a beta blocker in end of March to help with the panic feeling. For the 3 or so weeks I’ve forgotten to take it regularly. It’s resulted in the effects of the anxiety being much much worse again and I took a bad panic attack Wednesday last week followed by a few smaller ones and generalised panic and anxiety feelings for a week.

today should be CD 17 out of 28-31 for me however I’ve had a sudden gush of deep red almost brown blood that filled my liner. Redder on wiping. I put a tampon in - 2 hrs later the tampon was red but not full or anywhere near what it would be on a normal period for me.

ive had some cramping for a few days but I’ve started a fiber supplement for a bit of constipation so put it down to that (and some night time bloating)

could this heightened anxiety have caused this early period / break through bleed ? I always thought it could but it would be a lighter spotting type thing (I’ve had cycles where I get a bit of brown spots around ovulation)

it seems very light now but still red and my stomach is tender like it would be on my heaviest period days.

Regardless of whether it could, you should get it investigated to rule out anything else.

I have never heard of anxiety causing mid-cycle bleeding. How would that work?

OnNaturesCourse · 29/07/2026 15:35

I phoned the GP who just shrugged it off as a one off and said ovulation can be effected by stress which could then changed your cycle

So you have spoke to your GP who has given you an answer - you're still not happy and are posting on MN??

I am looking for support from others who may be in the same boat.

my bleeding is that bad now I’ve taken Evana for heavy periods and I’ve expelled a tampon in 3hrs and leaked everywhere. I’m woozy and feel rubbish. I was told this period could likely be heavier if hormone / stess related but this is mental. Hubby had to come home early from work as I can’t care for the kids.

You're not looking for support, you're looking for validation

You say your're a worrier, you have panic attacks, you have been given medication that you don't take.....so the attacks have come back.

You have spoke to your Dr who has given you a reason and you're still not happy.

What exactly do you want - to be told to go to hospital?

Why are you so anxious?

OnNaturesCourse · 29/07/2026 18:28

@Imightbeinthewronghere wow - honestly I think you’re on the wrong forum. Here is somewhere parents woman men etc can all get support and advice on all types of matter. What makes you think you have the right to be on here belittling people who are looking for support ?? Please take yourself onto another thread 🤨

So because I am not agreeing to you or validating your anxiety I am belittling you - can you not see the problem with that?

Tink3rbell30 · 29/07/2026 20:19

Yes it can! I was very stressed and anxious because of a certain situation at the beginning of the month and I got my usual withdrawal bleeding (from the pill) a week early.

OnNaturesCourse · 29/07/2026 20:32

@Tink3rbell30 that’s interesting. Had you stopped taking your pill to cause it or did it just happen ? I always thought stress and anxiety would do the opposite and scare our periods off

No I hadn't. I had another week of pills before my usual withdrawal bleeding but it started a week early annoyingly. I thought the same but nurse said stress can stimulate hormones which can bring bleeding on. Ignore any comments from people lucky enough not to get stressed or anxious.

Of course. Someone who doesn't go into a tailoring couldn't possibly live a stress free life.

Your reply to her showed that. Be grateful you don't understand what it feels like as it can creep up on anyone.

I no longer have periods due to birth control but if I'm going through a particularly stressful time it will bring a period on its happened a handful of times over the last 10 plus years. Ive spoke to drs about it and says keep an eye on it if it continues come in but its always resolved itself and been directly linked with high levels of stress

I don't understand what stress is. Ok.

@Tink3rbell30 @youalright @Mulledjuice thank you for replying - it’s nice to know it’s not just me ! It’s been a horrific day with it and I still feel horrible. For context my panic attacks are at an all time high so I do wonder if it’s all related.

Definitely related! Panic attacks really are horrible and so scary. Hope you feel better soon.

OnNaturesCourse · 30/07/2026 18:40

@Tink3rbell30 thank you. I’m feeling better today and the bleeding has eased to normal levels - just strange to have a 17 day cycle !
