Zack Polanski and the guillotine

Everanewbie · 28/07/2026 16:50

AIBU to be sceptical that much will be done about Zack Polanski's tweet of an image of man wearing a t-shirt depicting a guillotine and the words "making plans for Nigel"?

Now I am not in favour of prosecuting people for words, and I don't want ZP sent to prison. But I would like to see this level of hate stop.

And I am finding the left to be extremely hypocritical with the violent rhetoric while simultaneously celebrating the arrest of Lucy Connelly and Graham Linehan?

It's completely true that it's not antisemitic to criticise Israel or to be on the Gazan side of this. So I do have to wonder why so many of them can't manage to do it without being antisemitic. To be honest, the more they show themselves up, the more I think the Jewish state really needs to exist.

They are all anti-semitic and carrying out roles which they aren't fit to occupy. Absolute wankers.

The Greens are a disgrace. Just when you think they can't sink any lower.

That sounds like you have a pretty unpleasant friend@Complicatedthings Please don't tar other left-leaning people with the same brush. Personaly I was horrified when he was shot, even if I despised his political stance.

How anyone can despise C Kirk is beyond me. 😒

BIWI · 30/07/2026 15:16

D'you know @Teddybear23 I thought you were being sarcastic, until I did an AS of you.

Just to be sure you understand where I'm coming from this is what Charlie Kirk was about:

Kirk advocated for a range of conservative positions, including opposition to abortion, gun control, DEI programs, and LGBTQ rights. Over time, he aligned with the Christian right and advocated for Christian nationalism. His more controversial positions included criticism of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as promotion of COVID-19 misinformation, false allegations of electoral fraud in 2020, and the white genocide conspiracy theory.

That's why I despised his stance. I didn't despise him, being as what I didn't know him, but I think those views and advocations are abhorrent.

I'd like to see you try to defend any/some/all of those.

Is his vile murder not enough? This is exactly has happened with Ann widdecombe. It's in extremely poor taste.

Yes I also despised Kirk’s views, as a Christian, particularly his ‘Christian’ nationalism, viewing it as a distortion of Jesus’s teaching. I found his views abhorrent.

That didn’t mean that his murder didn’t completely horrify me.

BIossomtoes · 30/07/2026 15:25

I’d never condone violence against any politician. I found Kirk’s views regressive and abhorrent, I still wouldn’t have wanted a husband and father of a young family dead.

BIWI · 30/07/2026 15:27

@LuckyHazelFox I was shocked by his murder and I do not, in any way, condone it. That doesn't mean that suddenly I have to stop despising what he stood for.

As it happens, exactly the same with Ann Widdecombe. What happened to her was shocking and shouldn't have happened to any politician, left or right, no matter how extreme. But I had little time for her views.

Just because someone dies does not mean that suddenly we have to beatify them.

TemperanceWest · 30/07/2026 15:27

His murder was terrible, but that doesn't mean the truth can't be told about him, does it @LuckyHazelFox ?

Edited

Whose truth? Did any his critics ever watch his debates? Ann said of herself that a lot of her opinions, beliefs and principles were misinterpreted. She even managed to get people to realise they had misread her. Nobody has a right to take away the life of somebody for their views. I'm not saying you and others are doing this.

LuckyHazelFox · 30/07/2026 15:33

...but to @BIWI @TemperanceWest Ann probably would disagree with what I've just said.

She would have said let her critics talk about her views, on her death.

I'm sure she would, and Kirk too. If you're a person with passionate convictions I'd imagine the last thing you'd want on your death is to have people silenced for discussing them. Posthumous debate of your views even by detractors immortalises them.

Most public sector workers I know are right leaning.... we just cannot speak out publicly for fear or being reported/struck off.
As per the Restore Mayoral candidates who is also a nurse.... he's been suspended by the NMC for speaking actual facts about his daughter being groomed and raped by Pakistani men.
Teachers... yeah. They are a breed apart....

A breed apart in what way,? Could you explain? I’m a retired teacher of 35 years experience, in both state and independent. Your comment feels like ypu disdain teachers - why is that?
Yes, I’m quite left wing. I’ve worked with some who aren't, but I do think it’s true to say most are centre or left of centre. have you ever considered why? Teachers (and nurses, and social workers) see the effect of government policy on the most vulnerable. That’s why we prefer centre or left to right wing governments. The vulnerable do better.

ZoeCM · 30/07/2026 19:28

Charlie Kirk publicly said Martin Luther King was an awful person, and that the USA made a huge mistake when they passed the Civil Rights Act in the 60s. Kirk certainly did not believe that being assassinated for your political beliefs should mean you (or your beliefs) should be beyond criticism!

I am no fan of CK or AW and I think both of them would agree that freedom of speech is more important than hurt feelings.

But, enjoying someone's violent death speaks to something very disturbing about that person's inner psyche. It is in incredibly bad taste and puts any decent person off another person if they say things like "I hope she died in agony" after someone was murdered in her own home. There is no defence for that - none at all

My very left leaning friend found it funny when Charlie Kirk got shot in front of his family.

Rules don't apply to them.

Disgraceful. A right winger just has to send a tweet inciting people to burn down a hotel with refugees in it during a period of rioting against refugees and attempts to burn hotels housing asylum seekers and she gets put into prison for her hurty tweet. A leftie gets tagged on someone else’s post of 20 photos of which one contains a joke inference to guillotining a disgraced racist politician who is trying to escape parliamentary scrutiny and the lefty gets off Scot free. There is no equivalence in this matter according to the hard left media that controls this country. The green guy needs to be locked up and the key thrown away but there is no justice in this country. What’s more rhere is not free speech. It is a disgrace. These lefties are evil and are destroying our country.

This. There's a difference between saying you disagree with someone's views and having perverted violent fantasies about people's death. It's akin to saying people deserve to be killed for their political views. A bit fascist, dare I say.
