AIBU to feel angry after my symptoms were dismissed as menopause?

‘Welcome to menopause’ she said
10 years ago, I was 38. I complained of tiredness, aching, especially hips and migraines.
10 years on Ive tried a few different hrt regimes, I’m under a neurologist for migraines.
Last month I had enough, pushed for a hip pain referral.
I need new hips!! And neck( but that can’t be done apparently) Because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE)
I can’t stop crying, this amount of damage could have been prevented if only they had listened.
Sorry I just need to vent somewhere!

No-and while menopause is possible at 38, it'd very likely it could have been something else, as you see.
Sick of any women's illness being pregnancy/anxiety/weigh related/menopause. Even when it's not.

I’m sorry, @Tooupset . That’s crap. A lot of us hit poor health at this point, and there’s not enough understanding or testing to make sure there’s nothing underlying.

OhBotherSaidPoo · 28/07/2026 16:43

Chist, thats awful.
I'm so sorry.

PullingOutHair123 · 28/07/2026 16:44

Welcome to "That" age.

Everything will be because for the menopause. Whether it's true or not.

I hear you, mine was all diagnosed as being overweight. I now have a healthy bmi and have a similar outcome to you. My husband has a far higher bmi than I ever had and he doesn’t get told it’s because of his weight.

I told my son last week that women get told it's all in their head/hormones or mental health, I'm not sure he believed me. Now his wife finally has a diagnosis after 5 years of doctors fobbing her off he probably has to.

Be angry, you have every right to be.

Similar happened to me OP - was fobbed off for years that my pain (so severe that I often couldn’t walk) was perimenopause. I actually have psoriatic arthritis which is finally now starting to ease with biological therapy, but it shouldn’t have been such a fight and it shouldn’t have taken so long.

Magicpaintbrush · 28/07/2026 17:22

That's appalling - all it takes is an examination and a blood test to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis. I have it too - guess what, the doctor said it was cramp!!! Fucking cramp. I find a lot of doctors to be very dismissive these days - don't listen, talk over you, just want to rush you through the appointment so they can tick you off their list.

I would be spending to a solicitor personally.

Seaitoverthere · 28/07/2026 17:52

I’m so sorry. My GP referred to refer me on the NHS to rheumatology despite acknowledging he thought there was something going on but said I didn’t meet the criteria. I then paid for a crap private consultant. Private consultant number 2 finally diagnosed me with psoriatic arthritis and am now on the NHS. Medication number 4 (2nd biologic) finally helping.

Had to have a hip replacement, was on 2 walking sticks but can now walk again.

MarthaLovesLaughing · 28/07/2026 17:53

Fuck! That is so awful. I'd make a formal complaint ❤️

Crazybigtoe · 28/07/2026 18:02

I would thank whoever diagnosed you profusely. Then forward that to whoever thought it was something else as an fyi and to improve their knowledge base....

It would be nice if there was a definitive test for menopause.
