Activity provider cancelling class

DS does a sport twice a week and I pay a monthly price for two classes a week; year round. There is a more expensive PAYG option of £10 a class, I pay £35 a month. The instructor said he will run through the summer and half terms etc with a break at Christmas.

Recently he has been cancelling class if there’s only two students saying it’s not worth it, AIBU to stop the monthly payment for the summer? It just seems unfair to pay if it’s not running and I could just PAYG for the odd class that is running.

So have you asked for a refund for the cancelled classes?

His choice to cancel the classes, I would ask him for either a refund, or a much discounted price for the PAYG classes during the summer.

He's not doing a favour by offering a "cheaper" monthly price. It's the cost for what is actually a membership, and the amount that makes his business sustainable for him. It's fine, he's the one who worked out his costs.

A much higher PAYG is not actually designed to encourage people, it's an option but not the one the business prefers. There're not refusing the option, but make it worth if for them to put up with lack of possible planning etc.

All fine, but don't think by paying what you are paying you are given a favour!

What does your contract say?
if you are paying a set amount for 2 classes a week that should be honoured regardless of the number of attendees.
it may be that there is a clause stating classes can be cancelled at their discretion but if it’s frequent cancellations I’d stop paying the membership and move to PAYG. You then don’t need to pay for weeks you can’t make the class and the business has no definite income from you to rely on - their loss.

No contract- it’s a casual thing with a WhatsApp group for communication.

Ask for a refund of the classes he’s cancelled. Simple

Londonrach1 · 28/07/2026 16:24

He needs to refund for the classes he not held
