Highgate Cemetery

I’ve always wanted to visit Highgate Cemetery. I’m in London for work in a couple of weeks and was thinking of taking the afternoon off to visit. However, I recall a few threads on here in the past where people have found it a really strange, unsettling place, and I will be visiting alone. I’m not easily spooked but AIBU?

It's beautiful. I went as part of a tour and it was so interesting. Not at all spooky. Some of the stories the guide told us were a bit sad but it's really not spooky.

Eh? Why would you be unreasonable for wanting to visit Highgate Cemetery?

It’s an old graveyard. It has all the features you would expect of an old graveyard.

Personally I think it’s absolutely gorgeous and not remotely unsettling. It’s fascinating and atmospheric. I love it. But l love all historic cemeteries.

What do you think is actually going to happen to you?

I went on a walking tour and I was glad that I did - it’s the only way to get into some parts of the cemetery and it’s so much easier to have someone explaining the history and giving the context. I didn’t find it that spooky though.

I went with DH a couple of years ago (wet summer afternoon), not terribly clear who was where IYSWIM. I don’t think the guided tour was that much extra to pay. You need to go on a tour to visit the catacombs, which are otherwise locked (I certainly wouldn’t want to be down there by myself, but I have a pigeon phobia!).

Our tour just covered the west cemetary, which was a bit slippery in parts (what with the rain). We were left to explore the east cemetary, which had much better paths.

The most interesting bits are only accessible with a tour, which is well worth doing. They are run by volunteers who often have special interests/connections with the cemetery. But they book up quickly as they have limited numbers. I would highly recommend it if you can get on.

Definitely do the tour, then when it is finished explore on your own. I loved it.

Beautiful uplifting place. Go to Waterlow Park next door for stunning London skyline views and a great cafe in a Georgian House.

If you like graveyards you'll love Highgate. It's not a sad or spooky place, there's something very peaceful about it

Why would it be spooky? I guess if you find graveyards spooky in general then it wouldn't be a good place to visit. But if you're not spooked by graveyards, it's a beautiful place to visit. Waterlow Park next door is lovely too.
