To be pleasantly surprised (Girlguiding uniform)

Guiding have just launched the new uniform - it’s the first time since the 90s that all the sections have had a new look together (although each section has had it’s own individual new uniform in that time I think?)

I’m a leader and am often 🤨 at a lot of HQ decisions but overall I like this! I like how it’s not too dissimilar to the old stuff so won’t matter that units will be mix of styles for a couple of years. The Rainbows in particular I think is adorable and my girls will LOVE it but what does everyone else think? Yay / nay / cba?

It looks nice!

I have relocated to an EU country and realised Girl Guides here only have one uniform design for all ages. I like it.

hahabahbag · 27/07/2026 20:57

I still prefer my brown dress and bobble hat, casual doesn’t mean better. Didn’t mind my smart guide uniform either. I don’t see how needing multiple pieces of clothes and a sash is better than a single dress.

Marmite27 · 27/07/2026 20:59

I’m not keen on the rainbows pink, and the brownies long sleeve stripy top. However the brownie and guide that live in my house loved them!

They also liked the shared range, after the initial panic of there being no zip hoody for guides, my guide said it was great because she could just wear mine! @Shock

hugasaurus · 27/07/2026 20:59

I like it all! The Rainbows stuff is very cute, and my Brownie daughter is very excited about the gilet and the beanie hat! My other daughter will be at Rainbows soon and really loves the stripy top.

I haven’t seen the leader stuff yet so I hope that’s decent as I will buy a few pieces if so.

GaaNeen · 27/07/2026 21:02

Where can I see it ??
hope it is reasonably priced !

happysunr1se · 27/07/2026 21:03

Looks fine to me, will blend well with existing uniform.

I think the outgoing guides uniform is particularly garish looking.

Wish they'd make the adult volunteer clothes with the option of cotton (and not just polyester mix) for the sweaty people like me.

WhatICallMyUsername · 27/07/2026 21:03

My son is in Beavers and wish we had some form of sash for badges, such a pain trying to sew them onto the narrow jumper sleeves, half the time they are in polo shirts anyway and then what happens if/when they grow out of the jumper! I like the new Rainbow ones especially

As a Scout Leader and continue to be extremely jealous of tje practicality of uniform compared to our bloody pointless shirts

MrsClatterbuck · 27/07/2026 21:10

Watching on the news it brought back memories when they showed the new uniform issued in 1967. I was the 1st brownie in our pack to get it and then had to go to an event where I had to show it off.

Needmorelego · 27/07/2026 21:11

I did read somewhere that one issue with the current uniform is that it isn't obvious that a group all dressed in it are actually a group of Girl Guides.
For example if a Scout group are doing a fundraising stall at a fete or supermarket bag packing etc the uniform is very distinctive and obvious who they are.
If a group of Guides do the same then it isn't obvious to some people that they are part of the (actual) Girl Guides so they weren't getting as much support or respect.
I don't know if any of that is true though.
But what this rambling is all about - the new uniform is a similar concept.
It's not obvious it's the uniform of the famous Girl Guides.
It's nice enough to look at but nothing amazing.
Sorry 🙁

ThatJadeLion · 27/07/2026 21:14

My daughter will like the new Rainbows uniform. But time to bring back the smart brownies dress I wore in the 80s! The uniforms looked so smart.

AnnaBegins · 27/07/2026 21:16

Massive improvement for Guides! Seems like minimal change for Brownies. I think Rainbows will love the stripes. Overall I'm impressed and relieved!

BirdLandedonmyHead · 27/07/2026 21:20

Who had a tabard for rainbows, culottes for brownies and then a polo shirt for Guides?

itsgettingweird · 27/07/2026 21:21

It looks nice.

However I still do reminisce about my brown dress and belt with the purse for my plaster and coin for the phone box! And my yellow tie and bobble hat!!!

stargirl1701 · 27/07/2026 21:22

@ThatJadeLion

That was my Brownies era too. The dress was withdrawn after Brownies suffered hypothermia when attending the Crystal Palace rally in 1985.

Me! I'm 37 😁

AllyinWoodland · 27/07/2026 21:31

I’m glad you explained it, because I was really confused by the 1990 references. I like the new uniform. I am glad I was a guide prior to the blue and red uniform.

Agreed!

Swissmeringue · 27/07/2026 21:31

My daughter likes the new stripey brownies top. I like the fact that it's similar enough to the old stuff that she can keep wearing the hoodie I've stitched 11,000 badges onto. Well, that I half arsedly stitched only to have MIL unpick and mumble under her breath about my inadequacies as she meticulously stitches them back on......😂

Don't forget the piece of string and safety pin!

Yellowpapersun · 27/07/2026 21:33

I saw this on the news and as an ex Girl Guide, I was interested to see the old uniform that I wore, late 60s/early 70s. Looking back, it was so impractical but very smart. The air stewardess-type hat had to be held on with grips. I used to clean my gilt badge with Brasso every week.

Oscillating · 27/07/2026 21:33

I had this beauty of the brown dress, belt, pouch, brown hat and yellow cross over tie as a brownie!

Me too!
As a very tall child mine was boarder line obscene by the time I moved up to Guides!

chillyputsomesockson · 27/07/2026 21:36

I LOVED my smart brownies dress! I felt so special wearing it!
