Teenagers can be horrible.

I am the exact demographic we are talking about. Yes it was used as an insult, and yes he was inspiring .. both of those things happened.

I grew up in the 80s. No idea what you're talking about.

It depends how old you were, he was on Blue peter in 1981 i would have been six or seven and i remember kids in my very nice very middle class convent primary school calling each other " Joey"
It may have bypassed you but it very much happened

Even if "we" didn't know it was wrong at the time, there were plenty that did. Many teachers, my own parents. And some classmates who knew somehow that it was wrong to "call people names".

They weren't the dark ages and this isn't the promised land.
