AIBU about MIL reaction?

Myself and partner recently bought our first home. We had been renting for 10plus years so this was very exciting for us and children (3 under 10).
When our offer was accepted we excitedly had texted a few family members nd nearly everyone had the normal responses "congratulations" "cannot wait for all celebrations" etc.
MIL response was "how much did you get it for?" Partner was a bit taken back and once he responded with the price he got nothing else from her. Am I wrong for thinking this is not normal? And to be disappointed with her reaction? especially as she hounded my partner during the process of looking for houses eg constantly ringing about houses for sale which were out of our price range, looking constant updates on buying process and even saying to my partner "not to let this house go" even though there was nothing we could've done if we had been outbid. It has really rubbed me the wrong way and I feel like I should say something to her about it.

YANBU but I don't think that saying something will make anything better.

" Not your business"..

Seems mildly rude but I don’t think you’ll gain anything by saying something about it.

JetFlight · 26/07/2026 14:06

Is there something behind it? Was she hoping you’d live closer to her or something?

Just ignore it.

"The asking price Mum. Thanks for the good wishes!"

Cherrysoup · 26/07/2026 14:23

Actually, I think it’s perfectly normal to ask. He didn’t have to tell her. I’ve sold my house and both neighbours asked how much the agent said and then how much it went for. One is debating moving too, one moved in last year and got the house very cheap because it needed a major overhaul. People are nosy.

Posters really need to get away from thinking that anything other than what they would do or expect is 'not normal'.

Its not so much that she asked about the price as I do think it is normal even if it is a bit nosey moreso that thats all she asked/said

So instead of being happy and pleased for you, she reduced it to just how much it cost.

Some folk are like that sadly. It's all about the money. This isn't a "you" issue. It's hers.

I wouldn't pull her up. It won't help, she won't change her attitude and you'll just spoil your own happiness by dwelling on her response.

Many Congratulations to you. Its a very nice time in your life. Enjoy it and be happy. 🥳🥂

Ethelspagetti · 26/07/2026 14:56

She enjoyed it when she knew you couldn’t afford the ones she suggested. Now you’ve bought one, she’s feeling a little jealous. She doesn’t sound very nice. Congratulations and where is the house? Are more normal questions.

Bikergran · 26/07/2026 19:43

Is she always a miserable judgmental cow? Don't bother saying anything, she probably won't change.
