Do people equate the global wild fires with global warming? Or is it still just weather?

What are your thoughts?
I'm finding the whole thing bloody terrifying and feel like we're all just sleep walking into a bit of a nightmare.

More wildfires and the severity of them is down to hotter weather and this a result of global warming

A major reason for global warming ( not the only one )
is farming animals for food

It creates global warming by releasing greenhouse gases like methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide. It accounts for roughly 12% to 18% of total global greenhouse gas emissions

Yep but people don’t want to hear that eating meat causes any damage to the environment they just want to bang on about electric cars air con and light bulbs as it’s easier for them.

What would you like the countries whose economy is based on farming animals for food to do in this utopia of yours? People are always going to eat meat, whether you like it or not.

sugarandcyanide · 01/08/2026 08:19

I think it's certainly global warming caused by how we live. I don't think it's reversible though and I think governments need to focus on adapting to the changing climate instead of trying to reach net zero.

I don't think humans will ever change their behaviour enough for it to make a difference. If anything consumption is getting worse because of social media promoting trends. People buy new stuff in much larger quantities than they used to.

People always talk about flying being the problem but I think this is a red herring. I think spending all your money on travel is probably more environmentally friendly than buying a new car every 3 years and spending the rest on tat from B&M that will end up in landfill when social media convinces you your latest trend is out of date.

@EmeraldRoulette- I agree it's crazy that we can still buy bbq's. Don't know what the answer to fag ends is?

Teach people to carry a small bottle half full of water and stick their fag butts in it.

Newbutoldfather · 01/08/2026 08:35

Actually, counterintuitively, global wildfire acreage burned and co2 emissions have been trending downwards since the year 2,000.

https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/annual-carbon-dioxide-emissions

It seems that better land management in Australia and Africa has reduced acreage lost to wildfire.

However, it does seem that, in the Northern hemisphere, they are increasing due to more heatwaves making for a more flammable environment, and that is almost certainly due to global warming.

it is important to be data driven, though, and not news headline driven.

Leisure travel contributes about 8% of our global warming footprint, of which air travel is about half of that. That is a huge amount given that the total UK contribution is about 1% and net zero is probably trying to save about 0.1% (!).

I don’t think we can stop climate change until it is too late, sadly. Nation states are in competition with one another and everyone would have to make sacrifices, something that very few are actually prepared to do.

Can we adapt and live with it? I think that we can, up to a point. But it will massively change the way we inhabit the world and feed ourselves. I suspect we will trend to a far smaller population and move further and further away from the equator. Whether that can be done without major wars remains to be seen, and I suspect is unlikely. And a lot of countries have nukes now.

I would have thought that people couldn't deny it but clearly 19% are still deluded!

Please tell me how I am deluded? Please note I am a climate crisis activist.
Care to explain how fires started by arson and negligence by individual humans were started by the weather or climate change?

Has climate change done a number on the sanity of certain human fire starters?
Did a bad wind wafting from an active volcano cause psychosis so we can then blame the weather?

Please do tell.

Carelessness with a fag end or whatever can only cause a wildfire if the land is like a tinderbox. The dryness of the land is caused by climate change.

That's skewed by the fact that we're a service led economy though and we've just outsourced all of our carbon footprint.

Globally it's 2.5% and the wealthiest 1% accounts for 50% of aviation emissions. The vast majority of people globally don't fly at all!

I still think even if we banned flying altogether it would have very little effect on the climate now.

My dh does actually fly a lot for business. And to the middle East as well! And also lo and behold he's done work for oil and gas companies there as well.

Well done you!!!!

I’m not vegan. But I’m also not constantly bitching about global warming. People who eat meat have no right to point fingers at anyone else who lives as they want to live. No point scoffing meat everyday and then criticising people who fly several times a year.

SurreySenMum26 · 01/08/2026 14:34

It's not just flying, eating meat or fast fashion. It's everything we do. It's us as a species and our modern lifestyle. We'd need to go back to hunter gatherers and only travel on foot. We can't do that so here we are.

If you accept science and accept extinction then why is it impossible to come to the conclusion we are heading that way if nothing changes? Extinction occurs when the environment can not support anymore. Idont think we will go extinct, but I do think earth can't support our numbers and lifestyle in say 200 years or the near future. Things will look very different and not by our choice. Our hand will be forced. If that seems ludicrous just think about farming.

I was talking to a friend about the south sea anomaly and they were saying that if we needed to, humans could find a answer for everything so if we was motivated enough we could find a solution to global warming. also we could find a way to reverse the South Sea anomaly. however as a scientist just don't believe this. Also why would we have to be literally at the brink before this was a motivation?

It's a bit like deep impact when you have to see the meteor with your naked eye before you launch the nukes. Leave it to thevwire then find plan A doesn't work and there no time for plan b.

NullaEffugium · 01/08/2026 16:41

100% agree

We'd need to go back to hunter gatherers and only travel on foot. We can't do that so here we are.
That would destroy the planet faster unless we also murdered 90% of the population.

We are in a real pickle thank goodness world population is peaking and will be declining in a few decades. We have a window of opportunity if we keep up the efforts so far and stop these stupid wars that are hugely damaging and accelerating climate change. I agree it seems impossible on some days but I can’t give up all hope just yet and will keep doing my bit. It’s like ants demolishing a bowl of sugar. I may be one leg on one ant, but I’m going to keep on as much as I can. We just need enough of us in the right jobs to make a difference.

The eating meat is destroying the planet argument is paper thin. The claims of carbon savings and less damage to nature are based on what if there were no food animals at all? Except for a few pairs in zoos. You’d have to want to extinct them to get the projected savings. It also ignores the delicate ecosystem where these grazing food animals fertilise the land for food plants without the need for petroleum based artificial fertiliser,..we all know that cows farting and pooping in a field is less harmful than drilling more oil.

SurreySenMum26 · 01/08/2026 16:54

Nobody needs to murder anyone, people will die off naturally with famine for a start. So no need to do anything as nature will take its course. We can't eat fast fashion or fossil fuel. You need seasons to grow grain. Unless we all live off hydroponics and polytunnel crops. I don't think we have reached that for grains and starches.

But there is no way to just carry on as we are and possibly that's not going to be a choice.

I do think a lot if AI had independent thought and the ability to follow through with actioning it the answer to global warming is get rid of us.

But here we are arguing that we are doing our bit by being vegan or never flying. That's not enough by far. Even if your entire life was zero gain to global warming there's a million people for each person like you who isn't. Millions if changes do add up but not enough. By far. But as I say it doesn't keep me awake at night any more. I don't worry about things I can not change. I can't put back glaciers or permafrost. No one can.

No
evidence is not paper thin
We all know this !

Whilst fossil fuels cause more harm @60/70%
there is absolutely no question
farm animals needed for meat eaters cause
11 /18% of global greenhouse gases

It also drives deforestation to create pastures and grow feed crops, reducing the earth's natural carbon sinks.
Thereby adding further to the world problem.

So
Yes. We should plan for no animals produced for human food. We can now make meat in a lab from historic cells

Other animals do not need to be affected. The problem is the trillions produced for humans.

We do not need manure to fertilise
-green manures, plant based fertilisers
Veganic (Stockfree) farming: A growing number of alternative growers reject animal inputs entirely, using
green manures (like clover nitrogen-fixing cover crops), composted plant waste,
and rock minerals instead

Manure can contain all those chemicals and growth hormones animals are given too. That’s rank!
As such manure is the chemical problem not the alternatives available
