To ask for a refund?

I’m feeling a little let down. I bought a ticket for an event advertised as a jobs fair, and the publicity leaflets said that several employers would be in attendance to discuss vacancies, and that unlisted jobs that haven’t been advertised yet would be available for ticket holders to apply for.

well, I got there and the vacancies were QR codes pinned on the walls that linked to mostly filled roles. The employers were various department leads trying to convince people to sign up for bank care support roles, fostering services and costly training programs (that start at £250).

hundreds of hopefuls clutching their cvs (myself included) while bored civil servants sipped coffee.

disappointed is an understatement. It’s a marketing ploy to meet their targets and I feel misled. AIBU to ask for my money back

I think that’s terrible that you had to buy a ticket in the first place. I’ve heard of recruitment days etc but you haven’t had to pay to attend. Asking (potentially) unemployed people to pay to try and get a job interview sounds awful!
Not sure that you’ll get your money back unless they specifically advertised something that they didn’t offer, and technically I suppose they did advertise jobs there. But if you genuinely think it was misleading then absolutely ask for your money back. Worst they can do is say no right. But I’m sorry OP. Good luck finding a job!

Threaten trading standards and contact them if necessary.

Ah I'm sorry OP.. I've worked at a number of these. They are awful and we don't even try to hire for decent roles, it's more about having your company name seen.

Who were these civil servants? Was this run by the jobcentre as I've never heard of them charging. Which jobcentre was it?

No legitimate employer is recruiting at something like this

Council staff I believe, people in charge of fostering services and social care 0 hour contracts. Bank staff who get called upon only if the contracted staff call in sick

Ah, so local government rather then civil servants, all sounds pretty terrible anyway! I would contact the local council, they are not supposed to be charging for one thing! Which council?
