To ask if you think the name Kyra is common

Personally I’m on the fence

OP posts:
PersephoneParlormaid · Today 06:53

It sounds like one of those made up names to me.

Portmore · Today 06:57

Lyra or Keira/Ciara would be nicer

modgepodge · Today 06:58

Meredusoleil · Today 05:57

Both the girls I know with the name (different spellings though) have Asian heritage.

Yes the only one I have come across was Indian heritage and not in the least chavvy, to be honest until now I’d assumed it was a name from that culture. Though now people have said it I can see how it could be lumped in with khloe, kourtney etc. but that definitely isn’t my initial impression of it.

Jumbaree · Today 07:07

It’s not at all classy but does it have to be? If you like it, go for it.

Level1469 · Today 07:11

The brother would be Kai or Klay

XiCi · Today 07:14

I dont know anyone with this name but think its sounds harsh and clunky, it just doesn't roll off the tongue. Love Lyra though

miffmufferedmoof · Today 07:27

The only one I know pronounces it Keira. I’d rule it out for the pronunciation confusion alone

TheWonderhorse · Today 08:03

It sounds like the sort of name that might be shouted out the window in my council estate OP. In fact there's a boy called Kyron. There are also loads of girls called Kira/Keira and a Kaiya.

Needmorelego · Today 08:12

This site is getting worse for being snobby about names.
🙁

MinnieCoops · Today 08:15

Mumsnet hate all K names. It’s the law.

UrbanSoul · Today 08:17

I like it. But I'm not a snob.

BettyJoanPerske · Today 08:18

Lilyhatesjaz · Yesterday 22:39

I have never met anyone with that name so maybe not that common.

OP meant 'common' as in chavvy or lower class, not 'common' as in frequently occuring. Sorry, OP, I'm with your husband on this one. It is deeply naff.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · Today 08:29

Let’s just say I’d have been quietly appalled if dd had picked it for one of my Gdds.

You've literally just posted on another name thread that you like the name Robyn (I agree - nice name).
But why is Robyn ok but not Kyra?
They are both perfectly nice pretty names.
Being "appalled" seems a very strange reaction.

Nursery worker here: chavvy, sorry.

They just have a completely different vibe, that's why. I wouldn't be 'appalled' at Kyra, but I just don't like how it sounds at all.

I chose not to use the C word before, but since you insist, I do think the K name has C word connotations. And the R name doesn’t. Not to me, anyway.

But having said that, I used to feel sorry for a little girl neighbour who immediately told me, ‘My name is Robin* and I’m NOT a boy!’

She also had incredibly short hair, and was wearing shorts (OK normal enough in summer) so all in all, I couldn’t help wondering whether her mother had suffered what they now call Gender Disappointment.

*or Robyn, I don’t know how she spelt it.

Do you judge all the children who attend your nursery by their names?

I hope not.

Brainstorm23 · Today 08:54

I would go with Kara or Cara if you don't want a "K name". Similar sounding names but a bit more "classy" and no issues with spelling them.

Needmorelego · Today 09:00

I think I am going to have to start avoiding the baby name threads.
The snobbish (and sometimes borderline racist) attitudes are getting worse and worse.

Snobbish I get, racist though? What did I miss?

The "C" word.

maddiemookins16mum · Today 09:58

There are far nicer names.

TrishM80 · Today 10:27

How about "Kay-Tee", it's a cool, modern twist on the boring, old fashioned "Katie"?

Omg no. Why would anyone do that, the poor child would be correcting the spelling her whole life. Plus it’s anything but a cool, modern twist!
