AIBU to let my children use all inclusive on a group holiday?

Against my better judgement I agreed to a group holiday. Mixture of family and friends all know each other well. All have children ranging from baby-16

My BIL organised it but we all booked separately.

He sent a link to an all inclusive resort and that's what I and half of the group booked.

BIL and the half booked the same hotel but self catering.

It was £600 more for AI- which as we are here for 8 days works out as less than £20 per person per day (four of us)

First night was fine as we all went out for dinner but today has been hell.

We have had a pool day and my kids have been able to get snacks/drinks/etc as they like but to purchase it all is quite expensive.

We've just come back from dinner- which was 'free' for us but not for them and were told it wasn't fair if our kids used the AI.

I asked why they didn't book the AI and they said they didn't like AI- but they were at dinner having the same food as us.

I don't want to be say to our kids that they can't use the AI but equally don't want to fall out. I enquired how much it would cost to upgrade to AI and it was 2200€ per family.

I think that’s different. Use of a limited resource that some people have paid for and I’d be frustrated by that but it’s just the way it is. Same as saving a place in the aldi queue or slightly shorter Alton towers queues.

the way o see it, if my kids made friends at the pool and I said they needed a drink to keep them hydrated, I’d be getting on for their new friend too because it’s the nice thing to do and hurts no one. And that’s a stranger, not a family member. I’ve always done this and for adults I’ve been sitting with randomly. It’s a nice gesture, they’re happy and the hotel doesn’t care because no one has taken the piss.

But surely it is taking the piss if you get a family who befriends people, and then gets offered drinks for free like you say you do. Would you be so quick to offer new friends a drink if you were paying each time?
Yes the drinks are watered down and cheap, but still makes a mockery to those who have paid if you get someone like you handing them out to anyone and everyone.

You might have to have argument about it to get it out of the way . If he continues to be a dick then do things separately. If the kids want to mix, fine, but you dont have to. What a cheek. Idiot.

Are you suggesting the OP passes drinks etc from the AI she paid for to those who haven't paid?

You are very wrong to suggest the hotel wouldn't care. They very much would and could result in being thrown out.

This is on the BIL and his family, nobody else.

This never happens. At worst, you’ll get a stern word and a threat and if that happens which I’ve never seen, you stop doing it. It’s hardly stealing in this context and actually happens all the time. I’m not saying give the kids a three course meal, I’m saying have some fries and drinks when they need them.

Nonsense, just because you've never personally witnessed anyone being kicked out doesn't mean it never happens....

You could have had a dozen families removed on your last holiday for rule breaking, and you'd have no idea.

100pearls · Yesterday 07:50

AI can be really fun. My kids are adults but remember a time when we got AI and they could just have anything they wanted at any time.

What utter selfish fuckwit would ask you not to enjoy something you’d paid for? I would think really badly of this person in future.

Dumbledora8 · Yesterday 07:50

Are they having a fucking laugh? The entitlement of some people shocks me!!!!

MyDeftDuck · Yesterday 07:51

Give him directions to nearest supermarket (seems far too much of a fucknugget to determine that for himself) and tell home to go buy drinks, treats and snacks for his brood.
You get what you pay for in life and there’s no such thing as a free lunch - not even with AI because you’ve paid upfront.
Who goes on a holiday and expect children to NOT want the free stuff??

Sassylovesbooks · Yesterday 07:52

It's not your problem that your BIL booked self-catering and not the AI option. You've paid for the AI option, so why should you not use it??!! Your BIL can't afford to pay separately for his children to have the same as your children, because he didn't book the AI option, and that's your problem how??!! That's on him! He either pays or he tells his own children they can't have XYZ because it's not included, and he can't afford it!!!

That's no different to saying to someone, you earn more than me and can afford things I can't. So because I can't afford the same, you should take a pay cut and earn the same as me!!!!

Carry on as you are! He's a cheeky fucker! Yes, his kids might be upset they can't have unlimited bloody ice-cream but that's on him to manage, not you!

Agreed. My 6 year old remembers her all inclusive from when she was 3, and speaks fondly of being able to go and get an ice cream whenever she wanted, the pool and the pedalo in the sea...but mostly the ice-cream 😂😂😂😁😁😁

Daleksatemyshed · Yesterday 07:59

Your BIL chose to take the cheapest option possible, now his kids are upset and his answer is to upset yours as well? I expect he feels bad he's DC upset but he doesn't get to assuage his guilt by spoiling it for you too.

warmdreams · Yesterday 08:01

You carry on with your holiday including all the food and drink you have paid for. You are not responsible for the actions of others. They chose the cheap option and that’s on them.

ByHeartyHiker · Yesterday 08:01

To ask someone not to use facilities they've booked and paid for after choosing not to pay for the sane favilities yourself is absolutely ridiculous and batsh*t crazy

jeaux90 · Yesterday 08:04

Don’t say anything unless he asks. Let the kids crack on. If he brings it up tell him no, we decided to let the kids use what we paid for.

Gemilo · Yesterday 08:07

The thing is you’ve already paid for the drinks etc. you did it when you booked. You aren’t getting them for free. His request is totally unreasonable.

Enko · Yesterday 08:09

Can't they simply upgrade their children to AI. Even if they don't want it for themselves?

YANBU. And your Bil is mega weird

Yes, I’d definitely offer to buy people drinks. I wouldn’t buy them a second if it wasn’t reciprocated but that’s not going to happen at an AI. I don’t think it is taking the piss to give someone the odd drink. They’re paying to stay in the hotel and probably more than cover their free ones with the ones that they are paying for. I find it horrid when kids are throwing drinks around or getting a full drink and throwing it away for various kid reasons. The waste is atrocious but at least this way it’s wanted.

I, who have been there, can confirm no one has ever been thrown out because of my actions. I’m not generally giving things out to a dozen families either. Just one or two kids that play with mine and an adult that’s sat while watching their kid etc. I’ve not covered other peoples lack of ai.

Just because you haven't been warned, doesn't mean it is acceptable.

I can categorically tell you that giving drinks from AI to those who aren't AI has resulted in people being being thrown out.

It is viewed as theft of services and you can be escorted off the premises.

I assume you are speaking as a guest who did this. I am 20 years in the industry and we have zero tolerance for anyone passing food and/or drinks to non-paying guests.

Stop chatting shit.

Wowse · Yesterday 08:29

Tell him you've thought about it and as you paid £80 a day for the AI you will be using it to the max. Say if you pay £80 a day you should be able to get your dc plenty of treats.

I think this is one of those times when No really is a complete sentence.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 12/07/2026 21:51

This is one of the oddest things I’ve ever read. Of course your kids can use the AI you’ve paid for.

What did they think was going to happen when one half opted not to pay for it?! They need to explain to their own DC why they can’t have it, if they don’t want to pay ad hoc. They’ve no business telling you what you can and can’t do.

CF’s.

Edited

🤣🤣🤣
sadly this isn’t the most batshit thing I’ve heard this morning, but agree completely about the rest! You’ve paid for AI they can FO with their opinions

Hiyaeveryone · Yesterday 08:37

This isn't an acceptable request by them. I suggest you are firm but pleasant about it to avoid falling out but really they shouldn't have asked you. They are effectively asking you not to consume something you have already paid for to make them feel comfortable. I personally wouldn't get their kids free drinks from the AI but I might offer to buy them some snacks as a gesture.

Cherrysoup · Yesterday 08:40

Obviously your bil has had a mad moment and is totally unreasonable. Why on earth would you deprive your dc when you've paid upfront for AI? Madness.

Housebashing · Yesterday 08:40

Are your kids not getting stuff from the all-inclusive for everybody? Is that the problem? They’re just getting it from themselves and then everybody else is kind of having to pay because every all-inclusive resort I’ve ever been to? I could’ve got drinks for the entire place and nobody would’ve batted an eyelid they don’t check to see how many you’re having or who you’re giving them to.
Would it hurt for you to let their kids have an ice cream or a drink?

BurnTheWholeThingDown · 12/07/2026 21:49

This is the most batshit insane thing I’ve read all day, and the competition has been stiff.

Tell them to fuck off and stop being such complete fucknuggets. Don’t give them any hint that this is at all an acceptable request. It’s not.

Pretty much what I was going to say, but you put it better! Enjoy your AI holiday op! Ignore the fucknuggets!
