People trying to carry on the drama after a heatwave

I know this is probably a stupid thing to get annoyed about but aibu to think it’s ridiculous when people keep trying to carry on after the heatwave is over.

Over the past few weeks we’ve had two mega heatwaves here, well over 30 degrees. I really struggle with the heat myself. I can happily sleep with the bedroom window open all year round and never have more than a 9 tog duvet on as I run hot.

But even when temperatures have dropped to a perfectly reasonable Summer temperature.(it’s 19 degrees here), some of my friends are still complaining how hot it is and that they can’t cope.

Dh is refusing to put the 4 tog duvet back on the bed as we will be too hot apparently and has not only the windows but the front door wide is open.

People are asking if the schools will be back open.

It’s forecast to be 25 degrees tomorrow even during the hottest part of the day.

My friend got annoyed with me when I said it had cooled down, she said it hasn’t. Surely there’s an enormous difference between 34 degrees and 25 degrees?

Aibu to think some people are just trying to carry on the drama?

Still over 30 for the next week here but temperatures overnight are dropping low enough to cool everything down more. It's hot but not anything like it was 2 weeks ago

Franjipanl8r · 12/07/2026 21:47

It completely depends on what kind of home or office or school you have to be in. Someone in an old solid wall house with little windows is going to feel the heat less than someone working in an office or school with loads of glass baking like a greenhouse.

Our 1970s house with big windows has been uncomfortably hot for many days even when the outdoor temperatures dropped.

Some flats are highly problematic in summer. I’ve just been to a HOT European city and I reckon what we need are the external wooden shutters on windows, They are standard in Europe for buildings without aircon and make all the difference. Somebody who has more business sense than me should start fitting them in the B warmest parts of the UK so that flat dwellers can block out the sun and keep cool in the summer.
A bit like this but nicer and darker:

Having shutters is a problem in the uk as windows generally open outwards, so you can't operate them unless at ground floor level. When we lived in Paris our windows opened inwards so could use shutters even if on a higher level floor.

I think some people are missing the point,

If it’s still 30 degrees where you are then I’m not talking about you.

I’m talking about certain people who are still pretending it’s 34 degrees when the temperature has dropped to 19.

It’s going to get down to 13 during the night here but people are still claiming that they’re roasting and can’t sleep.

Flats exist in many other countries as well. A lot of the time when people are making a fuss it’s because they’ve been doing stupid things like opening windows during the daytime.

There was even a thread here yesterday with someone asking whether it would make a house cooler to open windows in the daytime when it’s hot outside! Then the same people constantly run around saying how unbearably hot they are. It’s like they’ve never come across summer before, or basic physics.

We haven't had a summer with weeks of 30+ temperatures for 50 years, so of course people aren't used to it.

Zov · 12/07/2026 22:02

It's still hot though.

34-35C which it was (near me in the North Midlands,) was a real struggle, (I think it was 5 days in a row!) and I am relieved that it's dropped to 28-29C, (which it's been today,) but it is still hot, and I get why some people may still be struggling.

A decade or so ago, we would have passed out at the thought of a temperature over 28C for the best part of 4 weeks which we have had so far! (Might be even longer yet!) Yet here we are. Understandable that some are still struggling, even when it's dropped a bit.

It’s still baking here in Cumbria, 32 at lunchtime when I popped out, and about 24 now in the garden.

We also have another week of it to go!

It most certainly has not been 32 degrees in Cumbria today.

What’s your reasoning for making this up?

ThatMintMember · 12/07/2026 22:02

I'm still moaning about the heat and it's low 20's here this weekend. Live in a new build that ends up hotter inside than outside, work from home, every place I've been this week has been unbearably hot (school, nursery, museum etc), everywhere that has aircon doesn't put it on (public transport, play cafe, shopping centre), we've also had swarms of thrips in the area this week meaning we couldn't open the windows for 2 days or they all come inside!

I'm just feeling irritated that nowhere seems to be have any suitable plan to handle the heat and we're just expected to be dripping with sweat all summer! It's not the same as being abroad as they have aircon so it's easy to find somewhere to cool down.

lovecotswoldsliving · 12/07/2026 22:03

It’s sizzling here in the Cotswolds.

EssCarGo · 12/07/2026 22:04

Maybe it’s the constant media hysteria and people have forgotten that weather is not that dramatic.

A few weeks ago the DM headline was ENTER THE HEAT DOME and I was in Scotland wearing jeans and a jumper 🤣

Pretty sure loads of us were meant to drop dead, don’t think much really happened there. Lots of clicks on news headlines though.

I think you're right that people often tend to be melodramatic. After all, most people like being an object of interest, and will, similarly, also often describe their unwellness far beyond what anyone would want to hear.

Here's a comparison. I've spent a lot of time in temperature of 40 and above. Although there may be air conditioning, I still may be walking a mile to get somewhere. And a while back, when the air conditioning broke down, I was stuck, overnight, night after night, with temperatures that were probably right around there. (I don't know exactly, because the thermostat wasn't working.)

That made me laugh. I don’t live in Cumbria I’m in the Midlands and it’s cooled down significantly.

But this is the exact sort of behaviour I’m talking about.

I get that some people might struggling even in 18-20, but it’s the complete denial that the temperature has changed that’s so weird.

Not to brag but it's 21 degrees here nowband I've got the (summer) duvet back on. Only going to be 25 tomorrow and I'm relishing being able to wear proper non-holiday clothes again 😂

Zov · 12/07/2026 22:09

@EssCarGo Depends where you are. It HAS been very hot where I am, and in some other places. Of course you would be wearing jeans and a jumper in Scotland. It was much cooler there. It was 35C in the midlands. (And parts of the south, and parts of Wales.) I seriously doubt you would have been wearing the same outfit if lived where some of us live.

It's almost like some people are a bit envious of others experiencing these extreme high temperatures! Weird. Confused

My car said 32 when I went to work at lunchtime 🤷‍♀️

You do realise Cumbria is quite a large country with lots of variation, don’t you? Why would I lie about it? 😂

Met office is saying it might get down to 26c next Saturday where I am and I can't wait 😫Another week of 30 is pushing me over the edge.

Your car is hot because it's a metal box.

It hasn't cooled down significantly though. You're talking as if it's dropped from 35C to 20C. It's been nearly 30C here today. It's still hot.

Why are you so bothered what other people say and think anyway? Let people moan if they want to! And it is not 'after the heatwave' for some. Some people are still in it!!!

Mischance · 12/07/2026 22:11

It’s ridiculous isn’t it. It annoys me so much when people just lie about the temperature like that. She probably parked the car in direct sunlight and so that’s what it said on the car thermometer or something 🙄

Honestly some people will just say anything to try and get attention, and you’ll probably be noticing it because we’ve just had such warm weather so they’ve made that their whole personality. They’ll have also done the same during Covid, and been the first people to get it!

As we suspected.

Cumbria isn’t a country, by the way.

Miss America.
i lived in Louisiana - no one walked anywhere.
And when they did walk, it was power walking round the shopping malls, where there was air conditioning.
There were no pavements on the main roads, because people went everywhere by car.

Well, my phone says it's 22 but my house is still uncomfortably hot. I have an attic bedroom and even with the windows open tonight, it still feels stuffy and hot - there's no breeze passing through the house.
It's obviously not as hot and sticky at 30+ but it's still not nice. We need rain to freshen everything up.

BlackCatBea · 12/07/2026 22:22

Houses take ages to cool down though. Have to let all the heat out but it takes a few days
