People trying to carry on the drama after a heatwave

I know this is probably a stupid thing to get annoyed about but aibu to think it’s ridiculous when people keep trying to carry on after the heatwave is over.

Over the past few weeks we’ve had two mega heatwaves here, well over 30 degrees. I really struggle with the heat myself. I can happily sleep with the bedroom window open all year round and never have more than a 9 tog duvet on as I run hot.

But even when temperatures have dropped to a perfectly reasonable Summer temperature.(it’s 19 degrees here), some of my friends are still complaining how hot it is and that they can’t cope.

Dh is refusing to put the 4 tog duvet back on the bed as we will be too hot apparently and has not only the windows but the front door wide is open.

People are asking if the schools will be back open.

It’s forecast to be 25 degrees tomorrow even during the hottest part of the day.

My friend got annoyed with me when I said it had cooled down, she said it hasn’t. Surely there’s an enormous difference between 34 degrees and 25 degrees?

Aibu to think some people are just trying to carry on the drama?

I think maybe everyone is just absolutely knackered?
3 weeks of nearly constant very hot weather, disrupted routines & sleep, end of term chaos, world cup chaos/late nights etc etc. I think everyone is just bit frazzled??
I know I am. In bed already!

Exactly. People are hot, tired and not sleeping well and their homes are still baking hot as well.

BauhausOfEliott · 12/07/2026 21:13

YANBU. Temperatures of 30+ are abnormal and when it gets to the mid-30s it’s extremely uncomfortable. But 27-28C isn’t hugely unusual in July and it’s weird to see people talking about them as if they’re freakish and suggesting outdoor events should be cancelled.

Taking ages for my top floor flat to cool down. Black cladding Window restrictors We had a tree for shading but the HA chopped it down because it cost less for them to do that rather than come back now and again to trim the branches. Flats now have to have a fire door as a front door. Allowed no gaps so no ventilation. This flat has been hot since 16th June. Because this fucking sauna doesnt cool down in between these heatwaves so its been a constant heatwave in here for the last four weeks

What a nightmare. I think the hot weather should make us all appreciate the trees so much more.

We’ve got a tree out the back and dh is always threatening to chop it because of the leaves but ok bloody glad of it.

The house hasnt cooled off yet it's still holding on to the heat IF ONLY my house would do that in WINTER it just takes the outdoor temp and magnifies it summer or winter in the summer it rejects attempts at cooling in the winter it rejects attempts at heating

So im one of those people (internally) moaning about the heat

fashionqueen0123 · 12/07/2026 21:14

It’s 30c here and set to be that for the next few days and has been that for weeks now apart from the odd day so yes I think someone saying low 20s or 19!!! Is ridiculous. That’s not hot at any time! 19 🤣

DrRylandGrace · 12/07/2026 21:16

21ZIGGY · 12/07/2026 20:49

I'm still moaning but it's 27/28/28/29/26 this week with me

But why? These are very nice, pleasant, mild summer temperatures. In many countries in Europe such temperatures are very frequently from April to late Sept/ early Oct. I really don’t understand what the fuss us about?

Zanatdy · 12/07/2026 21:16

It can take a while for houses to cool down. Also depends how you cope on how hot your house is. I’m currently in a flat (about to move to a house) and it’s so hot, unbearable as in the South East. Went to visit a friend today and we sat in her shaded north facing living room and it was so cool, completely different to my flat and i’d have no problem coping with that. We live in the same town, but don’t have the same experience with the heat.

DahliaDelights · 12/07/2026 21:16

Side note, get seperate single covers each instead of sharing a duvet. Never have to abide by what someone else wants ever again! He can have his 13 together if he likes while you have a cotton sheet

Everyone is different, if people are struggling then theyre struggling. If you are not, good for you.

Its still hot here but breezy so I am delighted but not for me to tell someone else theyre not uncomfortable if they feel that they are.

Live and let live

Flats can be up to 10c hotter than is it outside

I've still had the windows etc open as the house was still 25 by the evening today. But the weather is gorgeous temperature currently, vastly more useable than 30+.

Well of course it will be warmest by the evening, if you’re ventilating it properly overnight then closing windows in the daytime. But it will cool very quickly once the outside temperature drops below the indoor temperature and you open doors and windows to ventilate.

This is just summer. For once we have a decent one. It’s not a big deal.

Ludinous · 12/07/2026 21:21

While I agree there's a massive difference between 25 and 34 degrees. When it's been 34 degrees, the insides of buildings stay really warm. The inside of our house is still substantially warmer than outside even after having all the windows open all day.
I will also say, while 25 is a lot less than than 34, I still find 25 way to warm to be comfortable in, let alone work in.

ConverselyAttired · 12/07/2026 21:21

It's very, very humid where I am still. Today was 31 and we are finally due to drop to 28 tomorrow but that means nothing really because the old Georgian buildings are roasting. We desperately need some clouds and/or rain.

Flats exist in many other countries as well. A lot of the time when people are making a fuss it’s because they’ve been doing stupid things like opening windows during the daytime.

There was even a thread here yesterday with someone asking whether it would make a house cooler to open windows in the daytime when it’s hot outside! Then the same people constantly run around saying how unbearably hot they are. It’s like they’ve never come across summer before, or basic physics.

Hardly surprising that the inside of your house is hot if you’ve had your windows open all day in 34 degrees! 😆

Because English homes are designed to trap heat whereas most places in Europe are designed to do the opposite.

Our infrastructure and daily lives are also not set up for hot weather. We’re expected to carry on as normal whereas many counties have siestas or will close down when it’s hot (schools finish earlier in the the day and are already shut for summer etc).

Supersleepysheepy · 12/07/2026 21:25

Our schools haven't closed at all here, despite the temp still being 30. It's going to be another hot week here and many will find the heat hasn't anywhere to escape to now.

Anyahyacinth · 12/07/2026 21:26

My brick house is still superheated. Pavement temperatures were up to 59 degrees in places...how fast interiors reduce in temperature depends on green spaces, trees, gardens, the ability to have doors and windows open (safely) and much more.

After the last heatwave the indoor temperature here only dropped 1 degree a day.

If people have been out in the sun..the UV will be heating them too...

Heatwave not over here

It’s “freakish” for people to be suggesting that even with temperatures in the early to mid 30s. With proper precautions it’s not a dangerous temperature level otherwise more than half of the world would be considered uninhabitable for 6+ months of the year.

Some flats are highly problematic in summer. I’ve just been to a HOT European city and I reckon what we need are the external wooden shutters on windows, They are standard in Europe for buildings without aircon and make all the difference. Somebody who has more business sense than me should start fitting them in the B warmest parts of the UK so that flat dwellers can block out the sun and keep cool in the summer.
A bit like this but nicer and darker:

This overlooks the huge campaigns about excess deaths in those super heated places ..across the world

That’s not really true. Actually our housing stock is incredibly poorly insulated compared to other similar countries, many with much warmer summers.

Insulation works both ways: it prevents heat transferring in or out. If our houses were well insulated to keep heat from inside on the inside they would also be very effective at keeping heat out when they are cool inside.

A large part of the problem is British people doing stupid things like opening their windows during the daytime when it’s hotter outside than inside and therefore letting the cooler air inside their homes escape, saying a “breeze” of air coming through “cools down” the house. Obviously it doesn’t, if the air outside is warmer. Fans can be used for air circulation when the temperature outside it hotter than inside, that’s what they are for.

The crazy fuss about a couple of weeks of temperatures that are normal for months in the vast majority of countries in summer is ridiculous. People saying they can’t go outside or can’t go to appointments or can’t go about their life as normal, it honestly makes the UK a bit of a laughing stock just as it does when our airports close for 2cm of snow or the trains can’t run if there is any heat/ frost/ there are leaves falling from trees, our roads are full of potholes because we used slightly cheaper building methods that can’t withstand the slightest temperature change without cracking, etc. Pehaps the roads resemble the people.

Crikey. You were like this on the dentist thread too yesterday.

Therewerelionsonce · 12/07/2026 21:42

It's still been 30° here today and I have actually vomited after too many days of heat. Still over 28 for the next few days. Some people, like me, really struggle.
Haven't moaned to anyone though.

hay5689 · 12/07/2026 21:43

Fed up of hearing how houses in the UK hold heat when in the winter everyone moans how drafty and cold the same houses are on here.
