AIBU to be fed up with using fans at night

I am getting sick n tired of this hot weather. I just want a few days of sleeping without fans on in my room. Fortunately I am using ear plugs to reduce the noise. I want to sleep under covers not on top of my bed.

Live in a first floor flat where I can’t do much due to space and the fact it’s a flat.

Im following the rules of keeping homes cool but not working. it’s 31c in my bedroom.

Our homes are designed to keep heat in. I am so tired and want to sleep for longer

YANBU- but there’s absolutely nothing anybody can do about it. The weather is one of the very few things that’s in the hands of the gods.

IsawwhatIsaw · Yesterday 22:24

Agree I really hope it cools down soon. But depressingly it looks like this weather is the new normal

It’s not helping my asthma at all. They said this heatwave will be less humid! Rubbish! When abroad I’m fine with the heat as it’s dryer.

I want to sit somewhere cool and cry

I can’t sleep without a fan, have to have it on in winter too literally 365 days a year, it’s it’s cold weather I point out away from me

Thawtfulpanda · Yesterday 22:32

My neighbour has a ceiling fan and he says it's so much better than standing ones as it's silent. I am tempted to get one for next summer.

Hankunamatata · Yesterday 22:34

Nope love the noise of fans. So soothing.

Iv brought cooling gel mats for beds as im raging menopause women and burn hot at night anyway

So sorry, this is awful especially with asthma. A dehumidifier helps me.

Same here, I’ve done it for years.

Ceiling fans are amazing (Australian here) and so much more effective. And I like sleeping under something so use a top sheet in summer. If you are struggling a lot with heat a fan literally right next to your body directly faced to you (not to your face) on high is good but noisy so stick in ear plugs.

and huge sympathy- I have lived in some awful houses without ac and trying to exist without being able to sleep is so miserable (memories of trying to sleep on a tiled floor). Find somewhere cold during the day even if it’s a shopping mall to recover a little and I reckon if all else fails and you can afford it, get a night in a hotel

Can confirm Shark fans are silent. Unfortunately they have been sold out everywhere for a while.

XenoBitch · Yesterday 22:39

I hear music when I have a fan on at night. Can be really distracting when I am trying to sleep.

Also, it means I can't wrap up in my duvet and use my weighted blanket either. Far too hot.

Book a night at the local premier inn with air con?

itchyelbowsandswollenankles · Yesterday 22:44

It’s miserable. I’d book a night at a hotel, or get an aircon unit

Make sure you get the round one and not turbo blade as that’s shit! We have both and the round one is amazing and quiet, the turbo blade is noisy and shit 😩 (when they are available of course!)

I didn’t vote but YABU because I find the fan sound soothing and the oscillating breeze relaxing. I love a fan on full speed 10 inches from my face at night. If it was up to me I’d have it on when it’s -15°c outside but DH whines that it’s cold.
For reference we have a Levǒit tower fan that’s 35db at speed 12/12.

However YABNU about the heat, it’s ridiculous, it’s horrible and summer needs to end now. I can’t wait for winter when it’s dark for 18 hours a day, raining and minus temps for 3 weks in a row. Yes drying laundry is a nightmare and the garden looks like crap but at least I’m not sweating from my eyelids.

I have done tonight. I’ve sat in the spare bedroom with the shutters closed, the fan on full and I’ve cried. I’ve had enough.

Cried? Does it really get to you that much?

Not taking the piss, just curious.

Me three. I’ve now got so used to the whirring sound, I find it soothing. I find it really odd being in a hotel room (air-conned obvs) and attempting to sleep in silence now.

Sorry to butt in, I know you didn’t ask me but I also cried with frustration many times due to overheating in my flat. I have tried so many things including expensive specialist window film to reduce heat internally and emergency blankets externally on balcony glass. My flat still reached 35c this week and 31c during the night
I haven’t had a notmal night of sleep in ages, I feel unwell and summers are only going to get harder. I can’t get proper AC as I’m blocked as a leaseholder. Single aspect and windows barely open so can’t get cross ventilation. I try to avoid staying in my flat for most of the day and come back late at night

Already have portable AC but it’s not very efficient (single hose and the fact heat is still escaping with window kit I have, I don’t have sash windows which are more compatible)

I feel like I have to consider selling and relocating now, but will probably be harder to sell with overheating making it inhabitable

I take a small one with me and hope I can plug it in at the bedside.

Three going on in the bedroom during these hot spells. You can get very quiet fans now but they’d be no good for me.

Edited

I have this problem re not being able to use my weighted blanket. I’ve become so used to it and a top sheet doesn’t help me drop off. It’s miserable.

moltopianissimo · Yesterday 23:22

I have a Meaco fan next to me on its second lowest setting. Lovely and cool, and very quiet.
