AIBU to be fed up with using fans at night

Bbbuuu · Yesterday 22:19

I am getting sick n tired of this hot weather. I just want a few days of sleeping without fans on in my room. Fortunately I am using ear plugs to reduce the noise. I want to sleep under covers not on top of my bed.

Live in a first floor flat where I can’t do much due to space and the fact it’s a flat.

Im following the rules of keeping homes cool but not working. it’s 31c in my bedroom.

Our homes are designed to keep heat in. I am so tired and want to sleep for longer

I put a sheet or duvet cover in the washing machine just before bed & then put that on the bed and/or over me.
Really cools me down. Actually woke up feeling chilly in the night.

I can't sleep with a fan on either.

Size matters. So check the span of the fans

Sorry, I've no idea what this means. It's right above the bed so blows down on me.

You need to measure the span on the ceiling just in case it’s hits a wall. As some ceiling lights are not placed centrally on the ceiling

I can’t sleep without a fan, have to have it on in winter too literally 365 days a year, it’s it’s cold weather I point out away from me

me too and I love the noise, I cannot sleep in silence

You could buy a portable air conditioner. Pricey but I’d this is the new normal it will be worth it.

The width. The bigger it is the more air it moves.

My neighbour has a ceiling fan and he says it's so much better than standing ones as it's silent. I am tempted to get one for next summer.

I also have one of these (I bought it from TikTok shop) and it’s been fab. Super quiet!!

Has a remote, timer and also a light.

I’m also in a first floor flat and the heat gets trapped at my floor, so it gets super warm. My bedroom was 28 degrees last night.

I don’t have space for a big portable air con unit. But I was looking into those smaller ones that you can put water/ice into.

MassOfInterstellarGas · Today 17:58

I’ve bought a Meaco fan recently - it’s wonderful
and very quiet.

I've never liked the heat and feel it very much. What helps me a little is that I open my bedroom window wide for an hour, then close it pulling down the blackout blind.
I have a ceiling fan that I put on half way (it has 6 speeds) leaving it all day. I then put it full on an hour before bed, then when I go to bed I turn it down enough so I can barely hear it. Still hot but not unbearable. I also have a hot water bottle only used in the summer which I half fill and put in the freezer. At bedtime I take it out, put its cover on and then it goes where I feel hottest. I believe we are all suffering and praying for an end to this heat wave, God help us all.

Talisin · Today 18:37

For those that want a silent fan, the Aircraft Lume is currently less than a foot away from me, on speed 6 (of 12) and I cannot hear it at all. If it’s right next to me then speeds 1-4 are silent and I can hear it a tiny bit when it goes higher - only speeds 11 & 12 are what I’d call noisy and those are not speeds you are going to want to use when you’re trying to sleep anyway.

The downside of all this is that it’s very popular and sold out until the end of August now so not going to help you much this year, but future you will thank past you for having it immediately to hand next summer (and a September heatwave is unfortunately possible this year of course).

I love the hot weather as it means lots of sunbathing and sitting out in the garden, however not so fun for sleeping at night. Fortunately I like the white noise of a fan on in the bedroom. When I don’t have the fan on there is also a loud clock ticking in the bedroom, much to DP’s dissatisfaction!

MacMom · Today 18:57

Perimenopausal woman here - I’ve had the fan on in my bedroom pretty much every night for the last 5 years. I actually find the dull thrum quite soothing now and struggle to sleep if I don’t have that noise.

WhiskeyGinger · Today 19:15

I can’t be doing with fans on at night so don’t bother with one. DH keeps threatening to buy one but luckily hasn’t so far.
Three of my four kids have them on all year round but they seem to moan more about it being too hot.

Genuinely don't see how that makes any difference.

The breeze comes down. If the breeze hits a wall, it would come down the wall anyway, it won't be absorbed into the wall.

The light isn't central, but the fan is definitely effective.

Baffling.

It moves air. The room feels cooler. I've no idea if it could move more air, but it only came in one size anyway.

Cried? Does it really get to you that much?

Not taking the piss, just curious.

I've not cried but I am thoroughly miserable, crabby and irritable, I just can't get cool wherever I sit, indoors or out, there's no respite. I love warm sunny weather but this is too muc. Still, no point complaining because we can't do anything about it.

Bepo77 · Today 19:47

As someone who sleeps in silence how did the rest of you even discover you need the noise of a fan to sleep?!

OP I also recommend the cool shower-sheet trick!

Moonlightfrog · Today 20:05

I am struggling too. The fan is drying out my eyes and now they are running constantly, but I can’t sleep with out a fan. I also can’t sleep without covers. Last night was awful. What does help are dog cooling mats (if you can get hold of one), place it under your fitted sheet or in your pillow case. Sadly we only have one and I have to fight for it with my adult daughter. I have also been using ice packs and placing them on the back of my neck. I am contemplating sleeping in the garden tonight.

It’s not helping my asthma at all. They said this heatwave will be less humid! Rubbish! When abroad I’m fine with the heat as it’s dryer.

I want to sit somewhere cool and cry

My son has Asthma and he has zero issues with 30+ at dry climate. However in UK- we already missed 4 shool days because of the heat. I'll never understand one thing- how school can not have an AC. It should be a priority! They could even ask contributions from parents, i would be happy to pay that my kids wouldn't vomit at the class.

Go to your GP or asthma nurse there are things that help you over weather like this. I'm seeing mine on Monday

Totally agree. I had gynae surgery a week ago and I just feel so listless in this heat, plus hot & sweaty and i feel like I'm living a half life, trying to avoid the worst of the heat.

And I miss just having fresh air!

Kim5678 · Today 21:29

I bought this fan last year and it’s a game changer. Perfect height for the bed and it moves a lot of air, it has 26 speeds but I don’t think I’ve ever needed to put it above 10. It’s so quiet I often forget to turn it off in the morning, at the higher speeds it makes a whooshing sound but no repetitive or mechanic noises like from other “quiet” fans that drove me mad. I sleep under a thin flat sheet as I need something over me or I feel vulnerable. Before I got this fan I used to freeze a big bottle of water and wrap it in a tea towel then put on my lap or take to bed and it made a huge difference

I must admit I've come close, if you have sensory issues it's just extra torment. Or if you have multiple things going on, health issues etc, it would be the final straw, bearable for short periods, but agony long term.

UniquePinkSwan · Today 21:52

I have 2 fans during the summer and one all year round. Both facing me, not DH

PersephoneParlormaid · Today 21:55

I can’t sleep with a fan on, I need quiet. And I prefer the feeling of sleeping under a duvet. Can’t wait for chilly nights.
