AIBU to be fed up with using fans at night

Bbbuuu · Yesterday 22:19

I am getting sick n tired of this hot weather. I just want a few days of sleeping without fans on in my room. Fortunately I am using ear plugs to reduce the noise. I want to sleep under covers not on top of my bed.

Live in a first floor flat where I can’t do much due to space and the fact it’s a flat.

Im following the rules of keeping homes cool but not working. it’s 31c in my bedroom.

Our homes are designed to keep heat in. I am so tired and want to sleep for longer

I am currently working on trying to acclimatise. No fans or aircon here, I dont like either. Trying to keep the house cool as much as i can but also working on my acceptance of the weather and emotional responses to things I cannot control. Yes its warm but I still need to go about my day so trying to focus ways to do that happily and with a positive mindset.

I know that might sound smug and annoying but for me its so important not to keep fighting against things that I can't control and to try and take the positives.

I live in a first floor flat and it is currently 30.6 in here, it never cools at night and is horrible. But I do like the sound of fans, I too find them quite soothing! I have a medium sized one and a small usb one. I also use a cooling blanket at night now as I need something to cling to and it is too hot for my body pillow.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · Today 07:39

I don't struggle too much in the heat, but if I'm having a really bad hot night (I have to keep the door to my very tiny bedroom closed or the dog gets in with me and it can get stuffy and warm even with the fan on) I get my own back on the dog and put her gel cooling mat in my bed. She doesn't even use it, she just stretches out on the tiled floor, so it might as well be useful for something!

I'd kill for a fan at night. There doesn't seem to be one in the UK for love or money. I'm so fed up with sleeping under a wet towel to try and manage the heat.

shocked when i looked up screwfix and there are no fans.
have you tried lidl/aldi
amazon
argos?

Bryonyberries · Today 08:10

I can’t sleep with a fan or any kind of noise. What is working for us is all our bedroom windows open and everyone’s bedroom doors to let the cross breeze through. I leave my curtains open to feel the breeze. When the light wakes me I then shut the curtains but by then it’s usually cool enough to cuddle under my duvet (4 tog) and the last couple hours I get a deeper sleep. I’m off work next week so hopefully won’t have to get up to an alarm most days.

omghereistrouble · Today 09:30

Yes they are annoying plus also I keep tripping over it on the way to the loo in the dark. My biggest worry of course is the dog so moved his basket to by the window and the fan rotates first on us then the dog.

My daughter has an aircon unit, she’s been away staying with her boyfriend so I have started using it. It’s a game changer.. despite saying this every year, I am 100% getting one when the hype for them dies down and the prices drop, I am never suffering like this again.

Can confirm Shark fans are silent. Unfortunately they have been sold out everywhere for a while.

Are they as silent as the Dyson fans as they are definitely not silent?

Not sure if you are asking for ideas, but placing your sheets in a ziplock bag and popping them in the freezer will help a bit as will some cool packs around the bed. The Ancient Egyptians would sleep with a damp cover but haven't tried that one. A ceiling fan is less noisy and will work better. As for sleeping under covers, there's not really much you can do about that at the moment. We sleep under covers but there is no duvet inside.

A damp cover works it's the evaporation system. Have a quick cool shower get into bed with just a sheet over your wet body. I used to do it abroad after swimming in the pool at night. It's wonderful.

My Dil got one this year for the bedroom. It's been a lifesaver she said.

When its too hot, I get a towel and wet it (wring it out so its damp) and sleep under that

@AndSomeForFancyDress
Just checked for you, and there are quite a few on Amazon. 😊

Yes, Amazon was my first thought. But I would put one in my basket and when I went to check out, it was no longer available. That happened every time I tried to buy one. I'm going to buy whatever I can that moves air, even if it's just a desk jobbie, and as @Bbbuuu suggested buy a proper one in the autumn. I'll be better prepared next year.

My neighbour has a ceiling fan and he says it's so much better than standing ones as it's silent. I am tempted to get one for next summer.

I have this, it's not "silent" but it's far better.

It was only £80 at B&Q, two minutes to fit, is a light too.

Tcateh · Today 09:41

Not helpful right now but I got a pedestal one in Tesco start of the year for £12.50.

My DD is really really struggling. She is on sertraline and I do think it's having an effect.

I sympathise because I'm really feeling unwell.
We've got dehydration tables by Zero dissolved in a pint glass in the fridge. Got them on Amazon
It's a rule to take few glugs every time you open fridge.
Blue ice blocks on the go. Couple of quid for 2.
Water.
My fave, gallons of tea.
I'm menopausal and I've just got no tolerance too.
Xx

Applewisp · Today 09:42

We got a portable a/c unit for our bedroom and it’s bliss. Also I discovered that the huge fans that sit on the floor work better than the fans on a pedestal. They cool down an entire room. Expensive but much less so than an a/c unit.

Tcateh · Today 09:46

Also wring out wet t towels and put on you, keep moving it around.
I sat on sofa with one over my legs yesterday very cooking.

Size matters. So check the span of the fans

Netcurtainnelly · Today 10:19

I don't have a fan on at night. Try taking a hot water bottle to bed that's been in the fridge or freezer for a few hours. Cold water bottle. 2 if you've got 2.
Also a small bottle of water frozen or cold.

The electricity cost of having a fan on all day and night is very expensive too.

I've no experience of Dyson to compare, sorry.

For the shark flex breeze ones. The highest setting 5 obviously makes a noise.

The lower settings 1+2 I do not hear at night. I would describe those as being like a breeze from a window on you

Nofeckingway · Today 11:03

I take a cool shower then lay on bed with towel and fan on . The constant noise gets to me and I often have to switch off then switch back on when I get too hot again .

momager22 · Today 11:17

Op could you tell us what the doing to control the temp in your flat? We may have some more suggestions.
I’ve got a Meaco fan and it’s pretty silent.

I've just googled and an industrial fan is 5p per hour and most others are about 2p.

I have two fans in my bedroom on opposite corners. One is a tower desk fan. The other is a rechargeable fan which I don’t oscillate on the floor by my head.

When WFH, I keep the windows in my lounge open as it’s north facing. Then close blinds and curtains in bedroom and room I use to work in. I use a USB desk fan in there. WFH set up is a monitor and my work laptop. Unable to WFH in the lounge as it’s distracting.

Bedroom is east facing and so is the room where I WFH.

i don’t have room in the freezer to put in sheets, nightie etc
