Going away for school holidays & nobody to do the bins?

gardenhenn · Yesterday 12:27

We are taking DC away for a significant amount of time during the 6 weeks holidays and will have nobody to do the bins.

Have asked my parents as they live 25 minutes away but have said it's too far and they also workZ

Siblings/cousins also work and have their own kids to look after and would be unfair as again live 25 minutes away in the same town as parents.

Now, I have never had an argument or falling out with neighbours.

But there is tension due to the varying issues around this estate and I don't speak to my NDN on the right ( I would do her bins at times but she has stopped saying hello/speaking to everyone which suits me fine as she makes me feel uncomfortable).

I do exchange small talk/ hello with the other and get on OK but form feel comfortable asking her.

We genuinely don't know what to do.
Anybody been in a similar situation?

The only solution would be to leave the bins until we get back?

Why? Instead of throwing food scraps, peels, coffee grounds etc in the bin, we put them in a plastic tub with a lid and then in a freezer. Are you disgusted by potato peels or bread crumbs? What do British people put in an organic waste bin? Poop? Rotten meat?

I remember a few years ago on a local fb group people moaning about smelly food recycling in the summer. I suggested the freezer (clearly marked obviously) and I got called all sorts of names! 🤣

But I really don't understand why putting half a meal in the freezer to cook next week is encouraged but putting half a meal that has been on someone's plate is so disgusting. Or why veg peelings in a compost bin is ok but frozen veg peelings waiting for the bin men isn't. And before anyone shouts "raw meat", I bet most meat eaters have or have had raw frozen chicken or mince in their freezers.

Re rotten meat - we dont deal with that but if it was in a sealed tub and clearly marked then I'd rather it was in the freezer than sitting in a hot bin for a few weeks!

This,

Sure fire way to let everyone know your house is empty! Don't leave your bins out for weeks.

FreyaW · Yesterday 23:53

Is this a parody post?
What is this?

IchiNiSanShiGo · Yesterday 23:55

Can you pay a cat sitter to do a visit, but say you e got no cats, can you just pull the bins round and check on the house every 2 weeks (or whatever frequency you want).

alexdgr8 · Yesterday 23:57

Do you live in Clacton by any chance ...?

Gengha · Today 00:09

You’re overthinking a bit! It’s only putting a bin out. Just ask the nice neighbour .You’re hardly asking them to break rocks with their bare hands in the burning sun. Now we do ask our neighbours to take our bin out and they do with us too, but I’m sure when we first moved here we just saw each other was away and put their bin out and back again. No big deal or drama

sittingonabeach · Today 00:11

Can you take your rubbish to your parents?

Friendlygingercat · Today 00:20

I live alone and my bins only get put out every few months. I have a relative visit twice a week who takes away a black bag and deposits in the communal bins where he lives. All the rest is just cardboard, glass and garden waste which can be left until the bin is actually full.

VoiceFromThePit · Today 00:21

Why on earth can’t you just take it to the local tip?

and recylcing? who cares it isn’t going to cause any smell (you do wash your recycling like a sane person?).

alexdgr8 · Today 00:29

It is illegal under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to transfer household waste to another person's bin.
Even with their permission.
It is regarded as fly tipping and may incur a fixed penalty notice.
You can only take it to the civic amenity site.
Or pay a licensed operator to dispose of it.

alexdgr8 · Today 00:33

That applies to moving waste from your domestic premises.
Of course the usual procedure is to place it in the bins provided to you by the local authority for them to collect.

That's mad. I presume you're allowed to give them a kind present (of some rubbish) and then, if they eventually get to a point where they decide they no longer want to keep it (instantly), they would then dispose of it in their own bin?!

sittingonabeach · Today 00:59

So if I went to my parents house to visit and had a bottle of water in my car which I then finished so put it in their bin I would be fly tipping?

SnowFrogJelly · Today 01:04

I always ask my neighbours..

alexdgr8 · Today 01:05

I think ot would be unusual for action to be taken if next door neighbours agreed to take some of yours...
It is really aimed at stopping people moving their waste around in an irregular manner.
There are officers who check the origin of waste.
I knew someone whose job was to check public litter bins.
They are meant for waste which is generated while you are in public space.
Eg just bought an ice cream and dispose of the wrapper.
However you can face a fine for taking eg a letter from home and depositing it in a litter bin.

That's an interesting question.
I don't know.
But just in case I think it would be safer to bring the bottle inside their house and leave it with them to dispose of so it becomes their rubbish. And they can put it in their bin.
There's a lot more to waste disposal than most people realise.
And I mean literally.
Not in The Sopranos way

Remember that woman who was fined for pouring the remnants of her coffee down a storm drain before getting on a bus?
Was it outside Richmond station?
Though the fine was refunded after an outcry.
She should have been given words of advice.
Some private contractors are over zealous.

alexdgr8 · Today 01:23

I'm wondering about pic nics now.
Maybe that's OK to put in a litter bin. The wrappers or remnants. Because it was not waste when you left home with it.
It only becomes waste after you have finished eating...
I've no idea.
Just musing.
Not sure why this subject has gripped me.
Maybe it's the current prominence of a certain parliamentary candidate

The general waste bin was just collected so by the time we go in a few weeks it will be half full.

Won't be back until end August.

Do a tip run before you go then. I can’t believe you expected your parents to do an hour round trip on a work day to empty your bins!

Tamtim · Today 02:20

Ask the other neighbour if they would mind wheeling your bins back in. It’s only the once they’d need to do it. Decent people don’t mind doing it st all. Also, surely your neighbours don’t want anyone knowing your house is empty.

FlapperFlamingo · Today 02:32

After the last collection before you go double bag everything. Go to the top the day before you leave.

Luckylu123 · Today 03:15

Ask the neighbour you’re on ok terms with. If not her, the one on the next side of her.
People are weird these days, just talk to eachother.
Bins are not a big deal. our neighbours and us bring in eachothers bins every single week, depending on whoever gets home first.

disturbia · Today 06:45

gardenhenn · Yesterday 12:29

The thing is it's the recycling bin collection that will be missed, it's half full already and we will miss the collection for that.

Just leave the recycling until you get back !!!

Maisey1991 · Today 06:53

Take all your rubbish to the local tip before you go away. Sorted.
