To think these theatre prices are outrageous?

Currently looking at HAMILTON tickets, now I understand they have a ‘star’ casting in Leslie Odom Jr, original broadway cast but FIVE HUNDRED fucking pounds? For one ticket?

There are a few £250/£275 tickets left but the vast majority left are £500.

AIBU to think there should be some sort of regulatory body to prevent this kind of bullshit pricing?

£1k for a couple to have an evening at the theatre Biscuit

Has the heat got to people or something?

The pile-on on this thread is fucking ridiculous.

Oh come on, it's tedious to see people wanting everything for nothing.

From hairdressers that should charge a tenner for 2 hours work, to birthday cakes that are outrageous because individually baked and decorated cost more than a mass-produce cheap supermarket option.

Don't want to spend money? Just don't, but stop pretending it's "outrageous" that things are expensive.

Bet people like that would scream in outrage if they were paid a fiver an hour

OonaStubbs · Today 18:22

Our local Am Dram society puts on plays at the local playhouse that I'm sure are just as good as Hamilton, if not better, and they only charge £12.

Apologies it was @Gizlotsmum who pointed it out. However it is clearly written by the ticket price on the sales sites - it's hard to miss the charity donation portion of the ticket price.

The film of the original broadway cast including Lee Odem and Lin Manuel Miranda is on Disneyplus so if anyone is in doubt about value they can preview it for a tenner or less if they use the free trial subs.

I missed it. I looked here at tickets prices and there is no mention of charity donations, so easily missed. I guess if you go further it must mention it but I certainly don’t see it here.

But the point of the thread was to discuss the theatre pricing specifically for this run of shows, I know there are cheaper options. I already have tickets for LOJ and didn’t pay £500. I have seen Hamilton before both on west end and on tour. I know I can see a local theatre group, i know I can see cheaper touring productions and I know I can see Hamilton cheaper in the west end. My thread wasn’t about that though it was about whether or not £500 for a ticket is ridiculous or not. Apparently not.

Then why bemoan that it costs £1k for a couple to go to the theatre when you know it's only because of the particular show you want?

I don’t want anything for nothing. I’m not saying rights should be cheaper for me. I have already paid my price point.

OP its a ridiculous price for a single ticket but if people want to pay it then so be it

2 tickets would give a family of 4 a decent week away.

If we want to travel to London to see a West end show we would have several hundred on top of that for train/travel and a hotel. Our local theatre now shows the top shows which i think are expensive (nowhere near this! ) but in the scheme of it we are saving 100s by being able to see it a few miles from home so we feel this balances the cost

Saeris · Today 18:26

Isn't it supply and demand? Like why holidays from the UK are hugely expensive in August

Some people love musicals - Personally cannot stand them.

what do you mean it’s only because of the show I want? I’m going anyway. I was attempting to discuss £500 being expensive for theatre tickets just because of a big name cast member. Do you think £500 is a reasonable price?

Not at all. But it's daft to claim that's what theatre costs when it's clearly a major outlier.

DjokovicsTowel · Today 18:29

If they don't sell at that price, they will go down nearer the time

Ye, it's expensive but people will pay and these ridiculous tickets cover the fact that other tickets are cheaper.

I want to see JCS with Sam Ryder and was resigning myself to poor view seats when they announced he was touring so I'll do that

I prefer to buy cheaper tickets and see lots but for some this will be their one trip in the year so will pay more

I didn’t claim that’s what theatre costs? I literally specified in the OP that I was talking about this run of shows with LOJ. At no point did I claim that to be standard theatre pricing.

“Why shouldn’t some things just be for the rich? Poor people get cheap amusement park tickets, why can’t we have something?” 😂 Can you hear yourselves?

£500 is a ridiculous price to charge for a theatre ticket and it’s equally ridiculous to argue otherwise.

bumblingbovine49 · Today 18:32

takeharry · Today 14:48

I actually bought my tickets the day they were released, I’m not looking to buy them now, just wanted to discuss how the fuck they think it’s acceptable to charge £500 for a single ticket.

In got tickets to see Hamilton last year in the front of the dress circle for £55 each

We booked moths in advance though( in April for September ) as cheaper tickets sell out very quickly

They had some £20.tickets at the back of the upper circle when I booked but restricted view so I chose a higher price

Regional theatre expensive seems expensive but when you consider that they, unlike West End theatres with long residencies, often have periods of no shows (or shows which don't sell too well but meet quotas of variety) then it makes more sense

fundamentallyauthentic · Today 18:33

Sorry, I was wrong in my last comment - some of the proceeds of the £500 tickets are indeed going to education and outreach.

But as has been said more than once, you're not paying £500.00 to see Leslie Odom Jr. you're paying that as the cost of the special Charity Ticket, the charity set up by Lin Manuel Miranda and a good one too, almost 50% of the cost in fact. People who can afford the £500.00 limited number tickets will pay that.
At no point did I claim that to be standard theatre pricing No but you did claim there should be a regulatory body to stop it.....what, charity? 🙄

TheScreensNurseTheScreens · Today 18:52

And £500 is a huge outlier.
Regardless of what you say now, there is very much a sniff of you thinking the pricing being too much anyway, with no thought to the sheer numbers of people whose living (behind the scenes too) depends on it.
If they can't actually make a living out of the theatre, there will be no theatre. Simple.
I may have skin in the game......

Jjhtgh · Today 18:52

I actually haven't heard anything of note from OP.

We explain supply and demand, pricing structure, payment for big star, the charity component as well which will go on and help outreach for theatre and actually help bring it to be more accessible for disadvantaged youths.

The £500 seats are the slowest to sell because of the high price barrier. As a result, when you look at the seating map now, the charity seats are often the primary option left available for many dates. So yeah you book tickets late only the most expensive ones are left. Half of the money in that ticket is going towards youth outreach for theatre. Is that still ridiculous?

TunnocksOrDeath · Today 18:54

For those who just want to see the show, and don't mind that seeing it without this one particular star, it is possible to see it before the end of the currently-open booking period for 24 quid a seat. It's not like the only way to see this is to pay £500 each.
If there are individuals happy to pay that amount, then good luck to them, they're subsidising this season's production costs for everyone else.

ShanghaiDiva · Today 18:54

Jjhtgh · Today 18:41

it’s supply and demand, we all know that, but the OP feels the price point of £500 is too high. That’s her opinion and that’s fine. We don’t all have to share the same opinion or ridicule others for having that opinion or suggest they take a course in economics.

I didn’t know about the charity thing when I posted the thread. I also acknowledged bloody ages ago that was a stupid comment about regulation. You don’t have to read all the posts but if you keep up with mine it would be helpful so you don’t waste your time.
