To think these theatre prices are outrageous?

Currently looking at HAMILTON tickets, now I understand they have a ‘star’ casting in Leslie Odom Jr, original broadway cast but FIVE HUNDRED fucking pounds? For one ticket?

There are a few £250/£275 tickets left but the vast majority left are £500.

AIBU to think there should be some sort of regulatory body to prevent this kind of bullshit pricing?

£1k for a couple to have an evening at the theatre Biscuit

It’s called ‘dynamic pricing’. They all do it - even the Royal Opera House. Which incidentally, is still much, much cheaper than Hamilton. And the quality of the singing is infinitely better 🤗

Gosh, I’m surprised to see so many people justifying this pricing because ‘business’ - I guess that’s how they get away with it though, people will pay. If they stopped paying stupid prices then businesses would stop charging stupid prices.

well, yeah...if they sell, why on earth should they not try to make as much profit as possible?

why do you think you should be entitled to everything for free or cheap? You have tickets anyway, but theatre tickets are a luxury, why should you not pay luxury prices? 😂

Is that how you get your own income? Keeping prices as low as possible because you want to be nice to people? Or are you professional and earning as much as you realistically can?

The sense of entitlement of some people will never cease to amuse me 😂

Theatres are generally old, expensive to run buildings. The capacity is fixed - and not all tickets for all shows on all dates sell out. Of course they are going to maximse their income on the shows and dates that are popular. Otherwise there would just end up being fewer theatres, and that's bad for everyone

People will pay because they want to see the show, and they think that the price is acceptable to them. No one is forcing anyone to pay those prices, and likewise clearly not enough people say yes, I want to go and yes, I can afford it, but no I am not going to pay the price even though I can afford it. Or there would be empty seats and they'd lower the prices :)

I got mine just as they went on sale, I did pay £200 and odd for them we have decent enough seats, it is my friends big birthday that is why we splashed out. £500 is outrageous though !

I understand why the prices are as they are, I’m merely questioning it. I think it’s absurd. Anyway, it’s seems I ABU here, which i didn’t expect. I thought the vast majority of sensible people would oppose this pricing in theatres.

I completely agree with you, it is absurd and tickets shouldn't cost that much. But unfortunately, there are people who can afford those prices, and only a fool would sell something cheaply when they know that lots of people want it and they can sell it for more.

EmailsaysOOO · Today 15:17

I agree but I want to point out pricing is almost always out of the control of the actual theatre..They are told by the production company what to charge, so please don't imagine the theatre has set them. Other than promotions they agree like buying over 10 tickets and the price goes down to X..But it's always got to be agreed with the production company.

Like I said, I apologise for doing t that wrong. It doesn’t need repeating that I said it incorrectly I have already clarified what I meant and said sorry for doing that wrong. I don’t even know what scare quotes means never heard of it. I used the marks wrong and acknowledged it though.

OK apologies. Your message earlier ("I put it in quotes because he is a star") made me think you thought that was how quotes are used - when as noted the opposite is true. If you meant that you realised that, then no worries, apols again.

I actually bought my tickets the day they were released, I’m not looking to buy them now, just wanted to discuss how the fuck they think it’s acceptable to charge £500 for a single ticket.

You didn't say you had bought them why not ?, they are £500 because he is in it and probably decent seats.

I’m actually the least entitled person, I’m not expecting everything free or cheap at all. I’m saying I think £509 is fucking ridiculous.

Sorry I’m not sure why it was relevant that I have tickets. I was talking about the £500 tickets for sale now not the tickets I already bought, which cost nothing like that.

takeharry · Today 15:11

I haven’t but I understand supply and demand. I just am opposed to £500 theatre tickets. I’m genuinely surprised that so many are quick to say it’s ok because supply and demand exists, I will never think that’s a reasonable price to go to the theatre.

Again it's not a necessity it's a luxury. Do you not think businesses seek to maximise profits?

Because they do this they can pay the wages of the people who are involved in the production of the musical.

Again I assume you paid the £500 meaning you found it worth your while to pay £500 to see the play?

Lomonald · Today 15:22

I wanted to see JCSS when we are in London the good tickets for that is over £300 !

Because your initial post looked like you went to buy tickets and they were up to £500, i don't know why you are being so aggressive !

So you wanted to go, you are going, and you didn't pay anywhere near £500 a ticket. Some people still want to go, don't have tickets and are willing to pay £500. I am struggling to see what the problem is.

Perhaps she's not studied economics before

You don't need to have studied economics to understand why a supermarket reduces the price of short-dated items in order to get rid of them before they are out of date, or why they put their prices up when there's a shortage of something.

It's the same principle.

It's expensive, so what? No one is entitled to go. It's a private performance and people can charge what they want.

You didn't pay the £500 because you booked early. As with flights, the closer you get to the actual time it becomes more expensive!!!! Shock horror. Maybe an economics crash course is needed

fromgothtoboss · Today 15:26

I’ve been to see Hamilton a couple of times, weekday matinee and normal cast, can get decent seats for about fifty pounds each

Fwiw the tickets were always £500 for the seats they are selling it isn't dynamic pricing and the date i have just looked at has very little seats left in the expensive seats, so people are buying them.

Like I said, I understand why it happens, I’m just disagreeing with it happening. That’s ok. It doesn’t mean I need an economics course. Lack of understanding hasn’t led to me thinking £500 is outrages for a theatre ticket.

im also sorry if my post made it look like I wanted to buy tickets. I was opposed to the price for anyone, not me specifically.
