To ask if starting HRT ruined anything for you?

For example, did it reduce your ability to enjoy wine or coffee?

I am about to start (so excited for many reasons) but a couple of people have suddenly given me the fear. If it's no coffee I am just going to ride things out the medieval way (except with coffee).

I still enjoy coffee and can tolerate wine much better on it (well a glass without a headache the next day which is an improvement)
and my husband says that he hasn’t feared for his life once since I started taking it.

HRT ruined my insomnia and severely restricted my anxiety. I wouldn’t be without it 🙂

Barney16 · Yesterday 18:38

It's great improved everything. I do sometimes miss however the ability I had before HRT to be cross. Sort of righteous cross if you see what I mean.

wizzywig · Yesterday 18:40

Nope. All fine here.

W0tnow · Yesterday 18:40

I’ve been on it for years and honestly not felt much at all. I take it mainly for bone health.

It came very close to ruining my relationship. I was vile on it. Much worse than my worst days of PMS, and I thought that was bad.

It did that to me too. Mind you it was some 25 years ago and choices and dose management was a lot more limited. I got to the stage of throwing things. I will say though that in loads of conversations, I have never come across anyone else in person who has found the same thing, A few online but of course not everyone who has that problem, admits it. I ebded up going cold turkey. None of the complementary stuff helped, neither did cutting out sugar or alcohol (luckily)

I had never heard of this. I wasn't a huge drinker before hand and I rarely drink now .

It improved my life so much.

Ginmonkeyagain · Yesterday 18:41

I tolerate alcohol a lot better since going on HRT - still can't drink as much as I used to (neither do I want to!) But since HRT I don't get the evil hangovers after a couple of pints.

HRT has sorted out my low mood, anxiety, aching joints and insomnia.

The only slightly negative symptom is the progesterone pills give me a bit of indigestion.

I am so excited, ladies. Going to pay it forward by being an extra delight to all I encounter (maybe).

It's age that reduced my tolerance of caffeine, not HRT, I was having to have my last caffeinated drink earlier and earlier, now I only have a lovely caffeinated loose leaf tea at breakfast time. My husband has suffered the same, but he can have a coffee mid morning.

Sometimes I get intolerant of wine (a histamine thing?), usually when I haven't been looking after myself. I have a break from it for a while and then I am OK again.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · Yesterday 18:51

No. Quite the opposite.

Cannot wait for my eyes not to be distractingly painful and dry as I drink my (third) morning espresso.

My eyes are as at least as dry if not more now.

rogueone · Yesterday 18:57

The biggest thing for me was my sleep, it improved massively, I didn’t have the hot flushes and stuff but did have the rage. I was initially really exhausted when I started on it and was worried as I didn’t want to be tired all the time but after a couple of weeks it was fine,

Have you tried the red bottled Hycosan eye drops - only thing that made a difference for me, recommended by my optician. Only need to use very occasionally now.

sea buckthorn oil is really good if you’ve not tried it already

Inthezone5578 · Yesterday 19:04

I did 9 months. With my consultants agreement I'm off it. I feel like me again.

Svolvaer · Yesterday 19:04

I’ve been on HRT since my hysterectomy about 30 years ago. It’s been great, no side effects that I can think of, only positives. They will have to wrench my HRT patches out of my cold dead hands!

I was happily existing thinking I didn't care about having sex ever again.. Would have been happily single for ever. I still am single.

Now, on hrt, it is all I want to do. As someone with past trauma, the hypersexuality is not as rosy as it sounds, but it is weird for sure.

Overall the improvements generally have been so good that I will take it for as long as I need. It's gone a long way towards sorting brain fog, joint pain, hot flashes, insomnia improved a little, less anger, anxiety etc. My face looks better too.

Is this a supplement, or something you apply, or a third thing? Would love to know more

I feel better on it. Sleeping great again, energy back, weight stabilised, no negatives for me.

I have mixed feelings about sexuality. On the one hand I think it's an important aspect of how I feel about myself but on the other it would probably be convenient to stop wanting it if I get too old to realistically have it. Don't want to be harassing handsome young care staff etc.

No negatives... all positives. Not sure why anyone would say otherwise? Hair and skin looking much healthier, I sleep better, aches, pains and brain fog all gone, energy levels up.. no change with anything I eat or drink... never heard that one!

HRT has been nothing but positive for me.

Same.
