She types like shes playing a piano! Its so irritating but I dont know why. Its the most random way of typing Ive ever seen.

Do you mean touch typing? As in, she doesn't have to look at the keys and types fluidly?

Does anyone look at the keys when they’re typing?

Yes, lots of people!

Didimum · 02/07/2026 18:36

That’s funny, because I play piano like I type.

Did they not understand the basics of how a telephone works - or were they more familiar with the old non-amplified two-yoghurt-pots-on-a-long-string variety?!

or his name was Dom

I touch type. And I learned on proper upright manual typewriters where you needed to keep your wrist level with your fingers and the keys because of the effort needed to depress them. Is that what you mean, OP? It’ll blow your mind but I also learned shorthand.

Me too 😱

Rondayvu · 02/07/2026 19:13

Have not heard the term touch type in years, I just thought we all typed now. I don't even have letters on my work keyboard from overuse but I only look at the screen anyway. I am seriously dying to see video footage of your piano concertist colleague typing now!

Also here giggling away at the emotional support potato. That is a truly random thing to do.

Oh yes, me too, in the mid 80s. Medical Secretary's diploma. Teeline shorthand to 130 wpm and typing around 60 wpm.

EBearhug · 02/07/2026 19:24

I once upset my manager, because he came up to me and started speaking, and I carried on typing while I looked at him. He then looked at my screen and saw I was typing proper, coherent words, not just gobbledegook. (I did stop when I got to the end of the sentence, but I was going to finish the sentence before concentrating on him.) This was apparently some sort of unreasonable behaviour (rather than impressively competent and skilled.) It seemed that touch typing was an alien concept to him, despite us all using keyboards most of every day.

taught on a manual keyboard - no hint of a new-fangled electric one until you could do at least 30wpm with 95% accuracy.

A potato??? Don't go quiet, I need to know more . What sort of potato? Raw? Muddy? Wrapped?

Yes a large raw unbaked baking potato. It would start sprouting roots then slowly mould over months. She’d throw it away then buy another one! Did it for the right years I was there for. Someone called it her emotional support potato! 🥔 I think they’re right! 😂

I did Pitman in the 70s, I really wish I’d kept it up, but I wasn’t disciplined enough to practice. I bluffed through my shorthand exams by memorising the dictation which I suppose was a different kind of skill!

Extraordinary! Thanks for the update.

YANBU, OP - you can dislike a colleague for any reason you
like! I currently dislike one because they have a really frantic “busy-busy-busy” type of energy about, them which gets on my nerves. At least the pianist typing is a tangible, physical thing 😆. The emotional support potato scenario would enrage re: the repeated waste of lovely carbs.

ClaredeBear · 02/07/2026 20:08

Omg I hope this isn’t me.

I had a colleague who kept fruit and a potato on her in tray. She’d leave it to rot, throw it away and replace with fresh fruit and a potato! Never ever saw her eat any of it! Such a vicious circle continued for years!

This is so weird because she does random shit like this too, she is definitely the type of person that would have an emotional support potato!

Oh this is just the surface with her to be fair but I would feel too mean going into more 😳

Was the potato supposed to keep the fruit fresh, do you think?

I get where you're coming from. I am currently sitting here listing to a colleague who types really loudly. There are 8 other people in the office & they can manage to type quietly. I can't even get away from it at home because my husband works at home in our spare bedroom & when I'm downstairs, it sounds like baby elephants tap dancing on the keyboard!

My DH is exactly the same! He usually works downstairs and me upstairs, but if I’m off he sits upstairs and I can hear every bloody keystroke! Sounds like he’s coming through the ceiling!

No, apparently it was a cover story/stunt potato, so she could allude to having a healthy baked potato lunch, then go to the canteen for cheesy chips every day.

About 20 years ago I had a colleague that type fast but onr handed. It was loud and clacky and like a creepy dancing spider! I'd be happy with a slightly pretentious piano style colleague. Not sure piano lady would last long in my team though.

So basically you just don’t like her. Nothing to do with her typing really?

mrshoho · 02/07/2026 23:11

I love when I get the opportunity to touch type lengthy text. Hardly ever get to do it now though. I volunteer whenever needed to take the minutes and clack away.
